what to give to a queen?

Philippines

I read all this news about Pres. Obama gave Queen Elizabeth II an iPod and some people reacted that it's inappropriate. That makes me wondered what's to give to someone who has almost everything and could afford anything. I was thinking since the queen could have any material things she want, I would maybe give her a nice, big arrangement of gorgeous, beautiful flowers, like a huge bunch of beautiful flowers. I don't know, maybe that's a bit odd too... You guys? What would you think is a good gift for a queen?

i dont think a queen deserves an Ipod. i dont think she will enjoy having something like that. a component will be more appropriate har har har. this is not eaay for a guy like us. specially me i suck when it comes to gift. i can not even think a gift for my wife then what more for the queen. this will be a nose bleed for me.

I doubt the queen will use the iPod or even bother to download songs, lol. Thanks for the response.

In all fairness, I heard that she asked for the iPod. When I don't know what to give someone I usually buy some of those scratch off Lottery tickets. I guess she wouldn't have much use for those though. I think since they took their chef along, they should have made her some American food, like Chicken Wings and Apple Pie or something. I hope he didn't download any illegal music on that thing before he gave it to her...

we are both from the philippines and there are a lot of products our country has that the Quenn (i presume) does not have. we can make her a crown made from coconut husk....or something like that. we can also make her a barot saya. that is if i am the one to visit the queen. Obama giving an Ipod is yet inappropriate, he has to think better than that.

I have been wondering the same thing. The Ipod was something that I don't think she would have, and if he had put appropriate contents on it I would say it was an original gift. I had also thought of a bouguet of flowers but she has fresh flowers cut everyday .

I think a good gift would be a new check book. Then she could write me a check, so I can get out of my financial problems. Then I would give her a beautiful Red Rose. Take care.

If I had my way, I'd like to give the queen a day off. She can live the life of a subject and I will appropriately take care of her role...just for a day. ;-) Well, I dunno. I think she has all that she can asks for except the life of an ordinary lady.

You are right, giving the iPod to Queen Elizabeth II means nothing to her. As she can have many things and even the iPod may not suit her age. I think giving a hand-made craft which can represent USA to her is better. I love China

Good discussion dutchess! What do you give the Queen as a gift? I don't know... She's a woman who has everything so how about a Harrods gift voucher? Just kidding! It is a difficult one, I would organise a goodies basket I suppose with gourmet things, some goodies from different countries perhaps. As far as the President's gift; I don't think there is anything wrong with an IPod in fact I don't know too many people that wouldn't love one!

hehe What ever happened to "Its the thought that counts"? He may not have known what to get her and thought that was the best thing. We don't know if maybe she had asked for an iPod for her birthday so we shouldn't really judge. The only person who can decide if the gift was appropriate is the Queen herself as she is the one who received it.

Somewhere I either read or saw a show on the queen and I think that, wherever she is at, there are fresh flowers put in every room possibly every day. This is a very good question of what would be a good gift for the queen. I think it would have to reflect what you thought of the queen. It would also have to be something that would mean something to her. This seems like more than just a difficult task. It would seem to be nearly impossible to pick the right item.

I don't know why people are saying the gift is inappropriate. Not only did the Ipod contain 40 Broadway songs that the Queen likes, it was also accompanied by a rare signed Richard Rogers song book. The Ipod also had footage of the Queen from her US visit. To me this seems like a pretty personal gift. Another thing the Queen is old, but so what? Are older people not allowed to use electronic?? BTW this was not even her first ipod. My grandma is almost 80 and uses things like DVR, digital picture frame, digital camera. Once you get older it doesn't mean you have to forgo technology. I am not sure what I would get the Queen. I am in Egypt now so maybe I would take here a piece of the pyramid...

I really don't know what would be considered an appropriate gift, but an Ipod just doesn't seem to fit the bill. For the life of me I can't imagine the Queen walking around Windsor Castle listening to the thing. It looks as though they couldn't be bothered to give the matter any real thought. But flowers might be good too.

I would think flowers or chocolates would be a good gift or something that is beautiful and grown in my own province of Manitoba. And since my husband used to work for the CN railway, a set of photos of all the history of the CN railroad and the original picture of them putting in the last spike. So a momento of a historic occasion would be fine. And I am sure the queen would really love those very expensive chocolates.

I've read that some people think it was an inappropriate gift. I don't understand why? It was personalized and came pre-loaded with video of her visit to Washington in 2007 which, I think, makes it a great momento. The Queen knows how to use an iPod since she already had one from what I read so I don't see a problem or anything inappropriate about it. One of the other responders asked if we would give an iPod to a grandmother and my answer is ABSOLUTELY, why not? My mother is 70 yrs old and I wouldn't hesitate to give her one. She'd love it. Heck she already has more gadgets than I do and a better computer. Sadly there are some senior citizens who have a bit of techno-fright but for most, they love gadgets as much as anyone else.

Hmmm i heard about it and I don't see what the fuss is about! To be perfectly honest with you I don't see why people feel they should make presents to those in such positions - perhaps a contribution to charity would be a much better idea! xxx

Hi, dutchess! I would give the queen a 24 carat necklace with matching earrings. I would make sure that the diamonds are genuine and that it sparkles.

am a great fan of royalty so i know what people say that the ipod is inappropriate for a gift to a queen. gifts for royalty, then, were like museum pieces. you know, the old kind of stuff that has a lot to do with the history of the country of the giver. but, nowadays, those stuff are real fortunes and would be the ones totally inappropriate. i believe the ipod originated from america and i have the funny feeling that with queen elizabeth being a cheapskate and not really taking any personal calls unless she's informed of who the caller is then i'm 90% sure she doesn't own an ipod. it's totally a fun gift from the obamas and america. that was very nice and very thoughtful, if i might add.
