I used to play the guitar way back when I was in school. I took lessons in school but I wasn't all that good at it and gave up on it after two years. Now my daughter was given a guitar and so we went to the music store and bought a book on learning. It is for beginners and so I am learning the keys again. I thought that it would all come back to me once I started again but it didn't and it is hard. It hurts my fingers to press down on the strings and I can't seem to not touch the strings I am not supposed to touch. I feel like my fingers are too fat. But I am determined to learn so I am taking breaks every 10 minutes to post in mylot and I keep going back to the guitar. I hope to learn it again and play again. Have you ever taught yourself how to play an instrument, and from a book and CD? Please share your story.

No but my b/f plays a guitar. He started as a child with a few lessons and just kept at it on his own. He can play almost anything now. My daughter acted as though she wanted to learn so I bought her the book Guitar for dummies. It's a very good book. It's very easy to understand. He's let her use one of his guitars but she seems to be losing interest. It takes a lot of time to learn and she's not so patient.lol Good luck and keep practicing.

The book I am using is easy to understand, it's me who is having the problems learning. It came with a CD so I can listen to it as well as follow the book.

I got a guitar given to me for nothing but it is a really cheap one and doesn't sound so good. I thought at the time that is would be good enough for learning and I guess it was, as far as learning the keys, but it didn't sound so good. I taught myself to play the guitar by books, just like you. After about 3 months though I decided I couldn't get enough out of it by learning by books so I took a couple paying lessons but that wasn't a hole lot better so I quit them. I an no longer playing or learning as I am not interested anymore because it is just too hard for me. But at least I can say I tried and that says a lot, no.... Happy mylotting my new friends, littlemissy signing off

I don't play the guitar anymore either and haven't much desire to learn anymore. I gave it a shot twice and didn't have much success either time so I have given up.

I don't think I would be very good, I wish i could because I actually help a few musicians and one of them is one of the best guitarists around, but I don't have a musical bone in my body....I picked up a mandolin he has the other day and he tried to show me how to play it but I couldn't get it and the strings hurt, I know a lot of guitar players have calloused fingers because of the strings.

I haven't played in about 35 years so it is going to be slow going. My fingers were sore so I had to stop for today but I will practice every day for about an hour or so.
