I have been looking for something different to do with the little spare time that I have!! Also perhaps something the children could join in as well. I am going to look into buying a wood iron tool that heats up and then you can engrave designs into wood, would come into good force at christmas as a different sort of christmas gift to give to people. Anyone on mylot do anything like this?

That is fun to do if you have some time to put into it. My husband used to do it and really enjoy it also.

We gave a wood burning set to our older grandson for Christmas and have been rewarded with several decorations and momentos as a result!

Wood burning seems fun and that i guess your kids should enjoy doing that as well ^_^ It's just like drawing except that they are designing it on wood instead of on paper.. hehe ^_^ I have seen ornaments like that seeling in the market and they are really nice ^_^ I believe it should be suitable as a gift for any kind of occasion as it's hand made by u and your kids, whereby it's unique to the world ^_^

That sounds a really good thing to do,just make sure the kids don't burn themselves .Making stuff together is always good.you do have some good idea,my son is fifteen and he does not want to do anything with me anymore just make the most of the time with your kids.We used to make models out of cardboard boxes .paint them and pretend it was a car one day. amoon rocket the next.wonderful memories.

I used to do lithographic when I took art courses,it is where you carve designs and roll ink over it and if you use different types of ink, you can first carve one design, it will appear in one color, and you will then carve another part of the picture, roll over another color, and keep doing it so you get a picture. I was not that good at it myself, mostly cut myself. But if you have a steady hand, you could try that.

My mom tried to get me into it when I was younger (maybe like 10-12 years old) and I tried really hard to make even the most simple designs and struggled pretty hard with it. I don't know if as an adult I would be any better or not. I still do have my wood burner somewhere here, and a book of some absolutely beautiful patterns to trace and do...but with the kids I'd be afraid of them getting burnt (they're under 6!) not something I'm about to try to do anytime soon again! But you really might like it if you have the patience and are good at detail, it was kind of soothing and relaxing to do - just nothing I tried to make ever turned out very nice!
