Have you successfully lost weight, and kept it off? What was your secret? What tips do you have for someone who wants to lose weight? I've been smoke free for a week now, and I figure if I have enough will power to quit smoking cold turkey, then I should have the will power to lose weight. I've been very overweight since my twins came along. I've tried the occasional diet which hasn't worked. Now I want to try it again.

I am very overweight, but for the last 2-3 weeks I've been doing something that is working marvelously. http://ese4me.blogspot.com/ My blog explains. Basically, it just consists of fasting two days each week (not consecutively). It is beautifully simple and it works. I've lost 6lb in 2 weeks and am due to weigh again Friday. It is the easiest "diet" I have ever done, and I know I can stick to it and reach goal. Then I will just fast one day (or even none) a week to remain there. It's a real money saver too. LOL!!

Eventually your body will get used to what you're doing, and will stop losing weight, actually chances are in time you'll just put more weight on, as your body will go into starvation mode on the days that you're not eating, so will "store" more fat on the days you do eat. My husband eats this way (not by choice, but due to his work schedule) and has always been at least 50 pounds overweight. He's never lose or gained any weight because his body is too used to doing what he does... and he does a lot of active, heavy lifting for his job, so you'd think he'd be in tip top shape!

I do not do well with diets, so I am trying to cut down portions. Eat more produce than meat or starch, and getting active.

That's what I need to do, but in baby steps. I go into a frenzy when I go on a diet, and cut myself back to 1500 calories or less... but the problem is I'm used to probably near 3000 calories or more (including soda) so by cutting that in half I'm starving myself and I give up too quickly.

I find myself to be quite the little expert on losing weight, haha, so here are my best tips to you. Good luck!!! 1.You need to combine healthy diet and exercise. One or the other just doesn't work. 2.Do not concentrate on removing bad foods from your diet, but concentrate on adding healthy foods to your diet. You will be so full from all the healthy food you won't have enough room for the junk. 3.Don't completely deprive yourself of your favourite treats though, or else you will binge eat later, thus eating more calories than if you were to allow yourself to just have a little every once in a while. 4.When exercising combine cardio and weight lifting. You could also try workout dvds, they're my favourite. 5. Take supplements such as a calcuim/magnesium/zinc complex, vitamin C, a vitamin B complex, and an omega 3-6-9 complex. 6. Drink ALOT of water. 7. Subscribe to a magazine like Shape, Fitness, or Oxygen 8. Use a smaller plate when eating. It takes less food to fill it up, and if it looks fuller, it tricks your mind into thinking it is eating more, when really you are eating less than if you were to fill a big plate. Plus if a big plate is half full, it looks like you are eating less, therefore making you hungry sooner.

See, I knew all that already. I think the problem is it all seems too overwhelming. I'm not someone who likes excersize. Yes I'm fine about eating healthy foods at meal times, but I love to snack between meals, and it's usually on junk! So not only do I have to start excersizing, I also have to watch what I'm eating, cut back on junk, cut back on portion sizes (I like to eat a lot), not to mention I'm a soda drinker so have to stop that. This is what gets me, I end up burning out because I'm taking on too much too fast and not seeing enough results!

Kats, I've found the best way to lose weight is to cut back on how much you eat. Cutting down on bread and fats is also a good thing. I mostly watch how much I eat, though and quit before I feel like I've eaten too much. If you are taking medication, though, it can sometimes keep you from losing or helps you put on weight if it is a steroid. My daughter has gained lots of weight since her hysterectomy and can't get it off due to a thyroid problem. She's trying to get that straightened out and trying to lose some weight, but it's very hard for her right now.She had always been a very slim person and it really bothers her that she can't get her weight under control.

I'm not on any medication, and I've been tested to see if I have any problems that would stop me from losing weight, and it doesn't seem as though I do, so it's just going to take a bit of determination.

Try joining a class or exercise group to give you motivation and make it more fun. If keeping a time slot open doesn't work for you look into joining 'Curves', you can go in at any time during the day for your 30 minute workout of cardio and strength training (best part is you're never sore the next day!) they also have monthly weight management classes that are free! It's lots of fun and very motivational plus you see results! I have a friend that gave up drinking soda and eating white bread and saw results within a week. Even just walking lots at a quick pace can help put you on the right track. Good luck! We all know it's not easy:)

Curves costs money, which I don't have. Classes and such cost money as well. It shouldn't cost money to lose weight.

Congragulations on being smokefree for a week. It is hard to quit smoking and it is a great accomplishment when you succeed for a week. Just take it one day at a time. I have tried losing weight a whole lot and nothing seems to work. I don't think there is a easy way to lose the weight. So good luck on losing weight. I will be pulling for you.

I would love to be able to say I could help you out with this one, but I can't. I am not what you would call skinny either. I will be sure to keep and eye on this thread to see if I see any good tips.

I guess the thing is to really, really want it. Then you'll have the motivation to stick with it. I think you're doing really really well with the smoking though, so you should stick to one thing at a time. There's only so much you cn do when you're trying to have a life s well!

I have a couple of tips for you. If you need help with losing weight, check out SparkPeople. Its a totally free and fantastic site. They have menu plans, calorie trackers, exercise logs, profile pages, blogging and groups you can join that suit your interests. I am currently working on losing weight myself. Since the first of the year I've lost 36 pounds, and I'm thrilled! And you know what? Its been easy. The main thing that has helped me is water. I drink around 8 or more full large glasses of water a day. I have cut back (but not eliminated) my snacks. I've been eating totally normal foods, even pizza, pasta and ice cream. I just watch how much I eat. And yet I'm still losing. And I haven't even exercised. (Exercise with my disability isn't easy for me) So far I've gone down two sizes in my jeans. Good luck, and I know you can do it!

Hi kats...First of all Congratulations on quitting smoking!! That's fantastic in itself. I think you need to step back and consider what a feat that is in itself. Then you can do something else with your life - like losing weight. I too have always struggled with my weight. The best thing I have done - not necessarily losing but just maintaining - is to count carbs. You'd be surprised how many carbs there are in everything. I was on a diet where I was instructed that 15 grams of carbs on the package is equal to one serving. So if you limit yourself to just maybe 15 servings every day you'll be limiting your intake without limiting your food so much. good luck to you!
