Do prescription pain meds give you hallucinations?

Have you ever experienced this? People always talk to me and say how wonderful their vicodin and percoset and oxycodone is... blah blah blah. I have taken vicodin and percoset and both gave me horrid hallucinations. I won't take them again. Yes I was in no pain but I don't particularly want to think that I cut my hands off and am hiding them from people so they don't get reattached to my body, or that I'm pulling all my hair out and going bald, suddenly, for no reason at all. I prefer otc drugs in larger quantities that do not impair my function, make me fall asleep, make me loopy, etc, that I need to keep in touch with my doctor in order to take lol. How do you feel about this? Do you take prescription pain meds chronically or once in awhile? Do you ever have strange side effects from them?

See now, THAT is odd. Although I think it is strange that prescription pain meds give me hallucinations, I think it's even stranger than a common sugar substitute would do that. Of course some people are sensitive to food color, so go figure.

I just plain not into medications at all. I will take antibiotics if I get one of my bouts of bronchitis but that's it. For just about any other problem I might have, I just take good old aspirin or rely on natural/herbal type remedies. One time years and years ago, my family doctor gave me a prescription for an anti-depressant for my anxiety issues....I took it a total of three days then chucked it out. Why? Well if I was depressed before taking it, I sure as hell was while taking it and felt like a zombie. Some of my friends who have anxiety issues used to take the most prescribed medication for the problem...Xanax. The one woman said while she was on it, she swore it was like a radio was in her head...meaning she kept hearing voices all the time...great huh? Once she stopped, the voices stopped. Since you're mentioning about pain meds, long time ago my mother was given some kind of pain med...can't remember what it was though but when she took it, it was like she was in the twilight zone or something and wanted to sleep all the time

I definitely take antibiotics if I get something that requires it, but those don't cause me to feel 'out of control' of myself lol. I've never had chemical depression so I have never taken any medication like xanax or anything else, although I know people on everything under the rainbow... I just don't like feeling like I'm in an altered state. It's very odd.

I have never taken vicodin and percoset, but when I had my heart attack I was put on statins, beta-blockers and an ace-inhibitor. I couldn't tolerate the ace-inhibitor and was taken off it within days. But I continued with the statins and beta-blockers. I was still experiencing a lot of dizziness, muscle pains and was bad-tempered (not usual for me). Last year I had enough and quit the statins and beta-blockers. Apparently they would extend my life expectancy by 5 years, but that's not proved. I'm going for a cholesterol test tomorrow, so I expect I will be encouraged to start taking them again - but I don't think so.. - Derek

No never. Whenever I used them I got relief. May be I am not that old to get affected by this. Well, all I know is that my parents are also using em but only on emergency but they never felt like hallucinations!

I think everyone is different. Where one med will effect them one way, it won't another. I don't like to take anything more then tylenol. Anything stronger and it knocks me out. Like you, I can't function. I have a problem even with going to the dentist because they want to give you a shot to deaden the area before they drill out a cavity. I know I won't be driving even after a simple thing like that because it knocks me out.

I'm not sure what my issue is. I have no trouble with the local they give you at the dentist, apparently my system metabolizes it faster than normal so they give me extra. I've never had THAT give me hallucinations though or affect me to the point of making me sleepy or unable to drive. Benadryl did that to me too... I took it once because I had hives from something. The pharmacist told me I could take 2... I went home and took two. Thank God my husband was home because I felt like I had narcolepsy and RLS LOL!

I use prescription pain meds once in a while, and I have never had any weird side effects with them. They work fine for me and they are actually once of the few ones I'm allowed to use. Some medicines might have side effects and if you get them you should talk to your doctor and change them to something else. I'm sure none wants to have side effects.

Yes they can do that to some people. Percoset and darcaset make my stomack sick. But vicodin works great for my severe pain. I never had a problem with it.
