I think your boss isn't a good boss. From your experience, I feel he/she can't delegate his/her authority to his/her subordinates well. It's because that he/she doesn't believe you. So you should prove that you can work independently. I think you are better to ask for work on your own. Of course, there is another possibility that your department indeed hasn't any project now.

Never be passive on the job. Continue to ask for projects. If there are none for you, ask "What can I do to help?" or go make your own. Branch out. IMPRESS them! Always show employers you're a proactive person who is independent and confident enough to get the job done on your own. Your chances of getting laid off will be much higher if you're sitting around waiting for it.

It doesn't sound good at all. 5 months there and 4 months on the bench? It does sound as if being laid off is probable. Still it hasn't happened. If I were you, I'd stay and be keeping my eyes open for other opportunities. Times are tough. There are not many jobs out there to be had. Bring a book or a magazine with you to pass the time ...oh and a newspaper to look for job opportunities. Ask your boss if there is something you can do to pass the time.....even if it is cleaning work. It will show him that you want to be active.
