Diet Soda

Normally I drink Coca-Cola, but lately I've been thinking about making the switch to diet soda in order to save calories and sugar. So yesterday I bought myself a 2 liter of the calorie free Pepsi max. It's really good, it's sweeter and tastier than diet soda but with the same benefits. However I noticed I drank a lot more of the diet soda than I drank regular soda. Do you notice that? In the time it would have taken me to drink 1 or 2 cans of regular coke, I had closer to 4 or 5 cups of the Pepsi max. Could it be because of the artificial sweetener? Could it just be coincidence and maybe I was just super thirsty last night? What's your favorite diet soda?

I personally HATE anything that's diet. They're tasteless to me. Yes, I drank diet soda before; diet Pepsi, diet Coke, diet Sprite, even diet something orange soda, which i forgot the name of the brand; diet ginger ale...the list can go on forever. When I compare the diet sodas with the non-diet ones, I just can't think why I even tried the diet ones. No reasoning...

Why are you drinking soda at all? We all need water, of course (about 2-3 litres a day, which is 8 to 12 glasses) but taking sugar substitutes is like a vegetarian eating pretend meat. Aspartame and saccharin are rather dubious chemicals, despite being sanctioned by the FDA, natural sugar (in moderation) is better for you and the sugars in fruit or fruit juice are better and more natural still. If you weren't aware of the dangers of aspartame, read here: http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/hidden_dangers.htm http://www.naturodoc.com/library/nutrition/aspartame.htm and, for a look at the other side - bearing in mind that this is Wikipedia - see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame_controversy The other things that cola contains, especially the acids, are not good for you or your teeth. One of the components of most colas (regular and diet) is phosphoric acid. Both this and caffeine (also a significant ingredient of cola) have been shown to be linked to lower bone density and excretion of calcium in the urine (which can also cause kidney stones). In short, there is so much bad about cola, especially diet cola, that I wonder that anyone drinks it! Why not replace your habit (for that is what it is) with fresh fruit or fruit juices, tea or coffee (for the caffeine) and water?

So far as I'm aware, Pepsi Max is not made with aspartame, it's made with Splenda. I may be mistaken, but isn't that different?

Splenda is very similar to aspartame. It is also artificial. Check Wikipedia because there you can read a great article about Splenda (especially controversy part...).

Splenda, when included in soft drinks, is basically sucralose, which is, apparently, converted from sucrose by a complicated process. "Safe human consumption is considered to be 15 mg/kg, or about 1 g for a 70 kilogram (150 lb) person. This is equivalent to about 75 packets of Splenda or the sweetness of 612 g or 2500 kcal of sugar." (Wikipedia again ... sorry! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splenda ) There is some controversy about it being 'made from sugar'. Whatever, it is the result of a highly intensive - and expensive - manufacturing process and therefore carries the economic burden of all such products. It is made by substituting chlorine atoms for hydrogen-oxygen groups and is supposed to be indigestible. However, think about it. If it has a taste at all, it must, in some way, be chemically active. It may be 'safe to ingest' (within the limits given above) but it is not something the body is naturally equipped to deal with.

Actually you would do much better just sticking to the regular type soda than drink any kind of diet type. The artificial sweetener found in diet drinks aspartame is the worse chemical concoction ever invented and has been proven to trigger a whole series of very serious health problems, and I even wrote a few articles about this fact. Also yes, many people do drink more of it since they figure it's low/no calorie

Well like I said I did a very in depth research into aspartame and wrote articles about it, and my thinking is I wouldn't go near anything with aspartame with a mile long pole. See I haven't drunk any kind of sodas in years, decades actually, so not really an issue with me anyway. I stick to drinking herbal teas and some fruit juices and good old plain water. I also did an in-depth research into the dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup....don't ask! Another winner. NOT

I found the whole listing of side effects from aspartame--I had included this link in my article I wrote. Also, nutritionist Gary Null mentions the dangers of aspartame as well and Dr. Mercola http://www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-side-effects.html {Warning: NOT a referral link)

After reading the responses here I can only say I agree with those who say it is better to drink water, both from a health point of view but also for the cost. Have you ever checked the label? Are there any type of health warnings at all?

To quote you katsmeow Aspartame is not as harmful as some believe. If it were, it would not be on the market. To put it mildly that's bunk...LOL--there are a LOT of things out there in the "market" that the FDA has approved of, but which is not necessarily safe. In many non-USA countries they have banned the use of aspartame. If they are banning it, it should tell you something. Another item...to give an example. Years and years ago the FDA approved BFA type plastic for baby bottles, this is the code #7 type bottle...it's been proven the worse kind of plastic to use for anything, let alone baby bottles as it leeches out toxic chemicals. Again many non-USA countries have banned the use of this plastic altogether, and just recently one city here in the NY area has banned the sale of the bottles...should tell you something, no? Just because the FDA has approved it doesn't mean it's entirely safe. And to be honest I just don't plain trust the FDA...they have screwed up on a lot of things that they consider "safe"

Oh I am no expert at all in these matters. Just that here in Italy there are warnings not to drink over a certain limit daily and I was curious to know if there was the same warning ther, that's all.

Aspartame is not as harmful as some believe. If it were, it would not be on the market. It's extremely popular and there are just as many studies proving it's safe as there are studies attempting to prove it's harmful.

I used to love fizzy pop, but over the years I just seemed to bother with it less and less and now I hardly touch the stuff. I do not buy any at all, the only time I buy it is for a special occasion, which is normally xmas!! My kids like either water or cordial so I never bother with anything else. The other thing that stopped me buying it was the fact that it turned two of my boys into human bouncy balls and they would literally drink it and then spend the rest of the day bouncing off the walls!!

I don't let the kids drink soda, they're hyper enough. They have juice and water, the soda is for me and hubby only.

I don't drink diet soda. Every once in awhile I will have a dr. pepper, which has always been my favorite. Aspartame is the worst thing to put in your body. The reason you drink more is because it's more addicting and you actually start craving it. It's also been proven that people who do drink diet sodas gain weight faster then those who don't. Aspartame causes so many mental illnesses, cancer, and other diseases. Artificial sweeteners are chemically made and not meant for our bodies. They won't quench your thirst, but make you even thirstier. So, it's not coincidence. Some drink 2-3 liters a day(in total with all the cans, cups, etc). Natural sugars are a lot better for us. My family and I went to the coca-cola museum and they talked how it cures headaches, stomach aches, takes off rust, etc. lol. But, other studies will tell you that it will disintigrate bone and other dangers. I think moderation is key. I'm not telling what not to drink or eat, but the healthiest things for us are things that are natural. Anything that has been processed isn't natural and should be avoided as often as possible. that's the healthiest way. but, a drink here and there isn't so bad. Taking large quantities will increase the damage it will cause. and aspartame is in alot of things other than soda. it's a poison and with all the foods and drinks that contain it, it's easy to consume so much of it if you're not reading the labels. FDA has approved it, but even they will tell you not to overdo it because there are side effects. So if you drink a diet soda, be careful of what else you take in that day. I drink other things than water, but I also know that if it's not water, then it's not healthy. If it's manmade, it's not healthy. lol. It's only healthy if it came from nature.

Everybody has an opinion about everything... including the experts. I'm not so concerned about it. I drink too much soda and all that sugar is not good for me! I'm switching to the calorie free soda to save myself some calories.

I don't drink diet soda. I haven't found one that tastes good enough for me to drink it regularly. I don't drink much soda anyways though. I haven't tried Pepsi Max. I thought that I heard that diet soda is actually worse for you then drinking regular soda. I think it has a lot more sugar or something.

It has no sugar, it uses artificial sweetner, like sweet n low... actually Pepsi Max uses Splenda, which is supposed to be healthier and tastes more like regular sugar. The only bad thing I heard about diet soda is that it makes you think you can eat more... so people tend to gain weight when drinking diet soda. Not sure. I'll let you know how it works for me.

I normally drink Coke Zero or Diet Mountain Dew when I drink diet soda. When I drink those I do drink more than usual. When I drink Diet Dr. Pepper I drink less. I like the Pepsi Max ok. My brother buys cans of soda because he says if he buys a bottle of soda he drinks more. That might be it too.

I'm not sure if I've tried Coke Zero yet. I did try Diet Mt. Dew and I didn't like that much. I've never tried diet Dr. Pepper... I'm not overly crazy about regular Dr. Pepper.

Hey kats! I really don't know if you drank it because you were thirstier or because you liked the taste so much! I buy the store brand Diet Coke! In my case it is Pathmark Diet Coke and I buy a 3 liter and can finish it in a day or so! And I can really drink it up! I don't think that it quenches thirst, but I really don't think any soda does because it still has sodium in it. They say that soda doesn't help when your thirsty. But, for me neither does water! So I really don't know what the answer it. But, I do know that taste wise, you can get used to the store brand diet cokes sometimes, but it does take time getting used to! There is a difference. But since I drink so much of it it saves me some money!

I agree on the water. Whenever I drink water I do feel thirstier and I crave soda. I don't drink anything other than soda (except 1 cup of cappuccino in the morning, and water when I'm working out) and I've never dehydrated, so I guess it's not that awful.

I read in a recent article that scientists found diet sodas cause weight GAIN due to the chemicals in it. What a kick in the pants for the thousands of people who drink diet sodas to avoid weight gain, eh? If you love soda, drink regular sodas but less of them. Supplement your soda intake with tea, juices and plenty of water. Diet sodas are useless for weight loss!
• United States
9 Apr 09
And there are just as many studies proving that aspartame does work for weight loss. The only reason it doesn't in some people is because they eat more food because they think they can because they're saving calories in their drink.

Perhaps since you knew that it wouldn't have as big of a toll on your health as normal soda, you subconsciously believed it would be okay to drink more? Personally, drinking any soda always made me thirsty, hahah.

I prefer Diet Pepsi or Coke to the non diet versions, because I find it less sweet. It's something I only drink once in a while though, and normally I hate the taste of the artificial sweeteners in drinks.

I have drank Diet Coke for over 20 years, I actually started drinking diet back when it was Tab LOL My husband drinks Pepsi Max and I really don't care for the taste of it. He use to drink regular Pepsi and he actually drank more with the regular than the "diet". It could be the artificial sweetener in it, studies have shown that people that use products like Sweet n Low are more hungry than people that use sugar. You could just watch your intake for the next couple of days and see how it goes. Once your body is use to artificial sweetener you probably won't consume as much.

I drink diet pepsi and have for years. It could be that you are drinking more just because you are not really getting satisfied with the taste if you are used to the regular pepsi taste. But I would think that this would pass with time as you adjust to the new taste. Regualar soda tastes so sweet to me now that I just can't drink it. Hang in there and good luck with the switch!

I know somebody is working as food chemist and he told me all the light products/diet food etc is all "poisoning", they do have no calories or less calories but the ingridients or chemist in the products can gradually poisoning your body so I never eat diet food and I don't particularly trust it is no calories or anything like that.

There is only one thing I want to say and that is Aspartame... You should drink diet sodas just in case you have diabetes and unless you want to take a risk of getting other illnesses don't drink it. Aspartame is poison, it is much sweeter, much cheaper to produce and unhealthy. I try not to drink sodas or beverages with added sugar, water is fine for me! Happy mylotting and take care!
