Connecting Two PC's

Okay, I have a question. My friend went and had internet access turned on for to use with my laptop. Now here's where it get sticky. We live in a apartment building two floors above each other. She has a laptop, but it is not wireless. Mine is. She thought that by turning on the internet from her apartment would be able to access it from my apartment. Now this almost sounds possible, but I think that I have to or we have to build the network, right? If I am connecting to her signal from my apartment wouldn't that be the same as connecting from a hotspot? Somewhere I was reading about an ad hoc connection. What's that and would that be what we should be going for? How do we secure the network where only we can access it? DCMerkle

I would have thought that she wouldn't be able to internet access at all unless she is plugged into a phone line. I thought you needed wireless to access a signal, whether it's from another computer or hotspots. I'm no expert though!

katsalot, My friend has the laptop that is connected through cable and she has a modem/router combination in her apartment. My laptop is wireless and if I'm in her apartment I have connection, but I will be going back to my apartment and was wondering how to keep that connection. DCMerkle

there should be a way to password it, in my neighborhood, when we first got our wireless we were the only ones, but now there are about 4 others in just our area, so when we got a new modum, we password protected it.

well, even tho she's not wireless, is her router have a wireless signal? if not, then she'll have to get a wireless router, then I believe you just follow the instructions and pick a password - I hope that being thar far apart, with the floor between you, won't stop it, it from reaching you...

Elic, I've been able to connect through her network from my apartment, but I don't have a password to do it. As soon as we can get together again I'm going to help her set up the password. The ISP provider that she is using sent her a combination modem/router. DCMerkle

Yes it is very possible and you need a network. If your friend bought a router, you need to be in the area that you can access its wireless connection. If her laptop does not have a wireless adapted but she has a LAN connection in her laptop then she will be using LAN connection using UTP cable. The internet service provider adapter must be plug in her WAN Port in her router and a utp cable from router to her laptop. You will be using the wireless but with a password so others cannot use it directly without permission or your friend or to you. It security settings and configuration can be located on the router's web page. There you can configure and try to setup your own security in router's wireless connection.

What she has is a modem/router combo. She is connected by cable, from the modem to her laptop. I've been able to connect from my apartment, I'm wireless, but we do not have a password yet to keep it private between her and I. I'm really not sure how to do that. I have Vista and so does she. Would anyone know how that is done withthe Vista OS? DCMerkle

You should go to the router's page and access its security.

You need to have a wireless router or modem before you would be able to be connected to her network. As others have suggested also password protect it, you can enter that password when you try and connect and your ready to go. Hope it works out for you

Youreyes4Today, So, the password would have to be generated from her PC as well? DCMerkle

oops mistake there.. She needs the wireless router, or modem hooked to her internet connection before you can use the wireless.
