How far can your kids walk?

My kids are on break from school this week, and they are not behaving very well! So today in order to get them out of the house and burn some energy, and allow me some excersize, we decided to go for a walk. Obviously the little 2 were in a stroller, but the older 3 and I walked a very brisk 4 mile walk. They didn't whine or complain once. In fact, they were all walking a bit faster than I was, and I was struggling to keep up with them at times. We do a lot of walking. Normally we go at a much slower pace, but 4 miles is nothing for us. Are your kids used to walking? How far would they be able to walk at a brisk pace?

My kids are pretty good at walking, well they have to be really as we walk everywhere anyway because I dont drive! My daughter is not too keen on walking, she is three and I still have to take the pushchair with me when I go out as she gets tired halfway through our journey. Mind you I go all over the place so its not surprising her little legs get tired!!

These days I only walk for fun, but when my oldest was younger I didn't have a car yet, so he and I walked everywhere, and I didn't own a stroller. He started walking at 10 months old and I'd make him walk instead of being carried. He got used to it pretty quick. Now we like to go for long walks for fun, and the kids adjust to it quickly.

I have no idea how far my kids can walk. We don't go for walks much. I know my 2 year old is like the energizer bunny though. She could probably have kept up with your older 3. My sister wants to start going for walks, but she is not sure how far we can handle walking.

I let my toddler walk a bit of it towards the end, and I figured we'd all have to slow down a bit.. but we actually didn't. He was setting the pace, but going pretty fast. After almost 1 mile he decided he wanted back in the stroller.

We walk a lot in the summer but I don't think any of us could do a brisk 4 miles lol. We usually walk a mile or two each evening that we walk. As they get older I'm sure we'll do more. We bike too. I want to get them into doing outdoors stuff.

I wish we all owned bikes. That's something I'd love to do! But hubby and I do not have a bike, each of the twins needs a new bike, and I'd need something for the youngest 2. Too expensive!

My eldest could probably walk as far as me, and quite often accompanies our guests when they go off hiking. My youngest is more used to being pushed or driven, but can walk from the house to the farm which is probably a mile and a bit. I do normally drive though. Partly because I'm normally carrying allot, but mainly because it takes us all day when we walk together!

This is an excellent idea. I grew up walking along the beach in the U.K. and we would walk for miles both in winter and summer. It is good exercise and a good time to talk to the kids too. I don't do much walking mnow but all my kids were athletic and played many sports etc. They still play tennis, football and volleyball even though they are all adults now. Yoiu are doing a good thing with your kids. Keep it up.Blessings

That's great that you get them outside for some exercise - you hardly hear about that any more! When my kids were little we would walk all over the place too, but normally just a stroll though.

My 7 year old son could have done that with no problem, but my 5 year old daughter wouldn't have stood for all of that lol. I don't know what is wrong with her, she does not like walking at all! Even though she hardly sits still in the house. When we have to catch the bus, there is a mile walk ahead of us to the bus stop. I am not old mind you, but I am no spring chicken at almost 28. However, when we walk to the bus stop, my daughter is crying and talking about how tired she is before we finish the first block! I don't know what is wrong with her; if she is just lazy or what lol? I don't walk as fast as I would if I were alone, I don't try to over work her. But every time we have to walk somewhere, she is crying about how tired her legs are before they even get a chance to be! Lawd, there is going to be a lot of exercise going on this summer!!!

Again, it doesn't help that we have to walk a whole mile to get to the bus stop. I think that she wants me to pick her up really, but that isn't happening because she is almost 60lbs, and I've got a bad back. I don't pick her up at all, and no one else does either, so I don't know where she got that idea if she does want that.

I have no problem walking because I WANT to, but if I have to walk to get somewhere, oh... it seems like an impossible task. That could be your daughter's problem. She's not walking or playing by choice... she has a destination in mind, and it seems like it will take forever to get there.

I dont know how far they can walk to be honest but if it is interesting to them they will just keep on going until they drop my eldest can walk for at least 5 hours before saying she is tired she is 5 my three year old can do the 5 hours if at an interesting place but if shopping etc she might manage an hour before she wants back in her buggy, she is only tiny for her age and I think this hinders her sometimes.

Hello, I have a question. Me and my kids normally walk for about 4/half miles in the evening. Today I did 8miles wail the kids was in school. Both of my kids have adhd so I was thinking why not put the energy to good use, you know? They like to walk as I be to be tring to keep up with them. Matter fact my son wants to join in the Olympics when he gets older. My Daughter she is so active much more then my son. I used to go with my mom on her 5miles walk so that's where i get the walking from. I notice wail we are out some people stop me and tell me they like what am doing and want to join me. But other people like a girl friend of mines and my therapist say it too much walking for them. I don't understand why they feel this way. Is there a certain amount of they should be walking?

My family and I walk a lot around three to 4 miles. We like to find different places to walk. Around my neighborhood they have a park that has trails to walk through and on the paths they have different activities to do they have monkey bars a pull up bar benches to do sit ups on etc .this makes it fun and you do not even realize that you are walking far

We like to go for walks at our local bike trail in the summer and my kids always whine. We usually have to let them take their bikes or scooters when we go so they won't complain as much and we can actually get some walking in but if we just walk say through the allies or such without the bikes or scooters we never get that far. I would say maybe one mile before they start complaining. We don't like taking them without their bikes because they are always needing to stop or want to fall behind so far that we are always stopping and there isn't much of an exercise to it. We live about a block and a half away the school and we let them walk home from school in the afternoon and they don't seem to complain but that isn't much work to them as it is when we are walking the trails or allies because they get to stop as much as they want and walk as slow as they want plus they have their friends with them so it is funner.
