Now I've Done It!

In a fit of madness earlier to day, I paid the deposit to have 7 days on a cruise ship! I so cannot afford it. But the price is very cheap - US$410 for 7 nights at sea, plus taxes. So I thought, why not go for it? I paid the $100 and am now committed to going. It goes from New York to Rhode Island, Boston, Maine, and then into Canada. New Brunswick, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. I just don't know why I signed as I also have to pay the fare from here to New York. But I can overnight with friends who will also be going on the cruise. Every year a group of my friends go off the Island and take a group trip to somewhere. I've always wanted to join them but couldn't afford it. I still can't but have until the end of August to come up with the money. I've never been on a cruise before. Have you been on a cruise or would you like to go on one?

Mine was a Christian cruise. So they closed down the bars and casinos on the boat. I know some Christians don't find anything wrong with that though. They probably just wanted to cover their bases, so that is why they shut them down for our cruise.

I have never been in a casino in my life and don't plan to either! I work too hard to throw away money. It must have been so wonderful for you both.

Yes, I've been on a cruise before. That was back in 1982...my honeymoon. We took a ship from the Florida Keys (I think that's how you spell it?)...cross the tip of The Bermuda Triangle (THAT was "fun"???)...and made our way to Nassau. The trip was fantastic. But then again, I've always loved boats and the water. Any kind of boat, any kind of water. If you CAN manage to go, then do it. You'll regret it later if you don't, and may not get the opportunity again, or at least for a long while. GO FOR IT GIRL! cdrxo

no I never have. I don't mind cruising but if I can afford it, I'd rather travel by land and air. I love beaches but not necessarily sailing into wide open sea, somehow it freaks me out. I would also try diving someday, but it won't be actual diving to the darker level of the ocean. I'd go as far as the sun still shines or it will freak me out. So you need $ 310 more, I think you can earn that in 3 months or so. I mean garage sale and part time work should be able to cover that. Post us some pics after you get back :)

Thank you for this response. I will try to post pictures when I get back but it is not unitl the end oif August. I am going to get here and am working on ways to raise money. Thank you for your suggestions.I already work part time but need that money for living expenses. I could never go diving but I love swimming. I would definitely freak out diving deep into the sea. You still have plenty of time to come up with the remainder of the money. How about trying to sell some things on Ebay or Craigslist? Maybe even have a couple of yard sales between now and then. My husband and I just went on our first cruise ever last May to Bermuda. It left from Newark, NJ. We had a great time. The only problem was that when we left it was in storm which of course gave me some sea sicknesses for the first day and a half. All in all I would love to go on another cruise. Maybe in a few years if we start saving up now for it.

Well, I just received an order for two gift baskets. This is unusual as the tourist season is over so I will make another $100. My daughter called this morning and asked if I wanted a Spa Day for my Birthday next month. so I told her what I did and asked her to send me the money instead! I am determined to go. I don't have stuff for a yard sale but I will try Ebay as I do have some collectables that may sell. I had never thought of that so many thanks for the idea. Noter to self: Get something from doctor for sea sickness. I am so glad that you had a great time. Many thanks for responding

I sailed from Liverpool to New York via Halifax Nova Scotia a lot of years ago and one of the stewards on the ship told me if I felt sea sick to eat something. Even if I was sick to eat something right afterwards and it sure worked for me. Enjoy your trip - that sure is a good price.

I would like to go on a cruise one day to the carribean, and visit the vast range of beaches. However sometime's when i think about it i don't think i can stay on a boat for to long because the fact, that im surrounded by water will just make me go crazy. I don't think i would be able to pull it of,however i heard the ride is very smooth and you can not even tell you are on a ship. So hopefully i shall go on a cruise one day.

I live in the Caribbean and yes, the beaches are wonderful. There appears to be so much to do on the boat and it does havwe four swimming pools so I don't htink that with a pile of friends going too I would be bored. The ship stops in a different place ach day and you can go ashore and do a trip or just wander around. Thanks for responding

Hey cynthiann! I think you made the right decision! You have certainly earned this cruise! You work really hard, put up with a miserable boss, work 2 jobs and take care of your family! You should go! I think you will love it! I have always wanted to go on a cruise too! You will love all those places that you are going to see! Boston, Maine, Rhode Island and all the places in Canada are incredible! You will see such beautiful scenery and will just not believe the sites too! You made the right decision! Now don't fret about it just be happy that you are going and enjoy the trip because you will not be sorry for a minute! The price is very good!

Thank you Opal. It was the price that tipped the scales. when the economy gets better(?) I know that the prices will increase. I know Boston quite well and drove to Rhode Island once but have not been to the other places. So I will not get off the ship at Boston and go on other optional trips. Many thanks for your support.

Bon voyage dear friend. I know a bit about this place in Canada, Halifax. Boy ! its wonderful. Hmmmm I always would love to be in a ship going far away in an unknown place. The fascination developed while I used to watch Tintin the comic charecter. One evening me and one of my close freind were sitting on this promenade called the marine drive here in Bombay and there was this ship at distance we both were daydreaming to be in it and go around the world. Happy Journey.

I have never been on a cruise but last January I was invited aboard a sailboat where we were for 3 weeks at the Caribbean. It was awesome. And I´m still paying for the airfare to Colombia where the boat was. I have to pay arounf $70 a month until November but I don´t care. Usually, if I work a lot, the money comes from my online working. I´n trying although this month many sites I was counting on, went scam (like Arabux). But I WENT Have a nice trip

Thanks for responding. Sometimes in life we just have to grab at opportunities when they come. This is a group booking so it was discounted also the recession has lowered the prices too. I cannot afford it but I am going to go somehow. I am sorry that your sites went scam. I only use Mylot - not time for anything else!

Hi, Cynthiann! Thanks, for sharing your adventure! Who could possibly blame you for saying, yes? That price is amazing! It's obviously an experience you find delicious to think on, so you should go. And, if you allow yourself to enjoy the anticipation and have fun--zero regrets--I'll bet you'll not only find the money to cover it, but will make friends and contacts while you're there that will enrich you further than the cost of the trip. I'm not so much into the idea of cruises, though I may go on an instructional one, soon. My mother, on the other hand, went on two and can't stop talking about them! She loved every minute, and I'll bet you will, too! Beating yourself up about it won't help at all. Enjoying it will make you feel wonderful! Chow! Puppy Training Pal

It must be exciting. We went on an Alaskan cruise, but when we went to the travel agency, they gave us the price from where we were in Winnipeg, and we had a choice either take the plane to Vancouver or go up through the North West Territories into Alaska itself. We took the plane. We also learned about the car rental agencies and the costs of the motels. We stayed at a really crummy one, and me needing two pillows because of my snoring. So you have to pay for the transportation there, plus you need to tip the stewards, and there is extra charges coming up. So better start saving.

I have always wanted to do the alaskan cruise - it must have been beautiful. My GF called earlier and said that the Stewards must be tipped. I have an Itinary so I will choose what trips to go on. I know Boston well so won't spend money going on the optional tours there. I will just have to be very frugal from now on. This will never happen again. I will overnight with friends in New York going and coming back. Many thanks for the tips about going on a cruise.

I have never been on a cruise but think it would be a lot of fun. My Mom went on a cruise and said she had the time of her life. My two friends that live in another state went on a cruise and they told me that the cruise was over to soon for them. They had a lot of fun and hated it when the cruise was over. They were lucky because my sister-in-laws husbands work payed for the cruise. I wish I could run into something like that. I definitely would take advantage of it. This is only the end of April so you still have time to save up the money.

When my Mom went on the cruise my sisters had paid for the ticket because she had holed herself up and wouldn't do anything after Dad passed away. So my two sisters decided to do this to get her out. She fought them on it but my sisters won out. They even bought her some new cloths. When she came home from the cruise she was a different person. She said that she enjoyed the cruise a whole lot. When she got back home she still missed Dad but she was ready to get out and start living. Go on the cruise. It will refresh you a lot and since you have a girl friend that is going that is even better.

Hi lilybug, I am not an impulsive person as I usually have to look twice at each dollar before spending but this is a group deal. 12 of us are going so there is a whopping discount. I am going to come up witht he money and some extra to perhaps go on a couple of tours at the different places we go to each day. I'm going to do it but not quite sure yet how. Not fair to ask my children as three of them have lost jobs now and will be job hunting this summer. I wil do it somehow. Blessings

Good for you, that's what I say! I myself have never been on a cruise. The idea itself, has only been something that I have started to consider in a positive way in the last year or so. I just always thought that being stuck on a boat was not something I wanted to do. Then I saw a travel show where the host said the same thing, but then she said she was wrong. The neat thing about a cruise is that it basically lets you travel from place to place while you play and sleep on the boat, then you wake up in an entirely new place. That made the idea of a cruise sound really cool. So the family and I are starting to look into maybe doing one next summer.

I jumped on this as because of the recession the prices are very cheap. I will go on 2 of the optional excursions but don't need to go on shore each day. I am told that there is so much to do on board. I will get to swim and relax etc. Look into it. I don't have all of the details yet but from what I do have it is good.
