To save our pets lives, how much is too much $$? I recently had a big scare with my dog. It all started 2 years ago when he was diagnosed with pancreatitis. The vet bill was alot $800 at that time. We didnt have that much income coming in so I was like ouch. Well 1 year later again my dog got pancreatitis again, the vet didnt inform us that he could have diabeties or could have contracted this after having the 1st bought of this illness and stupid us we didnt research enough on it to prevent this or see the warning sighns till it was too late. Once again my dog was in the midst of dieing. We were told it was a slim chance he would live but that we can up those chances if we took him to a specialist. So ok here we go racing to the specialist because I have had my dog for 10yrs and he was my first baby. I wanted them to help him , I in no way wanted to loose him. So all in all this specialist costed me $8000. Yes you read it right an esxtra 0 what I had paid originally. My question is how much is to much to save your furry friend when money now in days is not abondant? Why do these specialist milk us knowing that we dont have the heart to put these pets down?

It is frustrating how much treatment and procedures can cost for pets, and all of the pet insurances seem like rip offs. But I (and/or my family) would NOT let price hold me back for treating and going full effort to help/save our beloved pet- an animal family member. With our darlings over many years, we have been at the animal hospitals several times, undergone surgery, inpatient care, etc., and if needed, each of us will chip in to cover if needed.

So glad you went through the right way. One quick method for next time when it is really over the hill, as in you would NOT be able to afford it at all financially (even if it was your own human child), would be to talk about this to the vet/financial unit of the hospital, asking for a discount, OR consider going to another hospital/vet for the treatment at a lower price, if they are well experienced.

I don't know how much is too much and I can't even imagine a vet bill that high. I recently nursed my dog through the parvo virus and I know that if we hadn't caught it early and she had had to be hospitalized, it would have cost us a fortune. I picked up a pamplet about medical insurance for pets when I was at the vet's and I'm seriously considering buying it. I'd rather make a small payment every month than have to find out for myself the answer to your question.

I too wanted to do pet insurance for my dog long time ago. As I researched more into the benefits and underlying small print I found out that if a breed is proned to a specific disease it would not cover any expenses. So my yorkie was proned to these diseases from the get go , :( sigh. The insurance only works if its somthing out of the ordinary like if your dog broke his leg or something of the sort. So as a pet owner we now should set aside a bank account with these issues in mind. Thanks for your response
