I was just listening to a news item at World News Now...my favorite place to get not only news items but items on the news most people don't hear about since it's on so late while most people are sleeping. It was a news story about the Britain's You Got Talent contest of this year. Among one of the contestants, is Susan Boyle, a 47 year old woman, with quite frankly not great in the looks department, rather frousy, and not the stuff to make one think this person had any kind of talent. Well, as they say, NEVER judge a book by it's cover. Upon her entrance to the stage she got a lot of snickers from the audience and of course rolled up eyes from the You Got Talent judges including good old reliable Simon who is sarcastic with everyone. Well the tune changed the moment Susan Boyle began to sing...people in the audience stood up and cheered and gosh, Simon actually smiled. And while I watched and listened...sorry the sap in me started to cry. So watch this video and you'll be wowed...I guarantee it..introducing ....Susan Boyle... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY (Warning: NOT a referral link but to a YouTube video)

I caught the show she was on at the time. It looked like everyone had egg on their faces after Susan started to sing. She has a beautiful voice and she deserves to go all the way. It showed that people are too quick to judge others. Susan has a fine voice and you can tell that she loves to sing. Good for her!!

Talk about never judging a book by its cover. She really does have a remarkable voice there and I hope she wins.

Isn't she wonderful? The sap in me has come out too! We saw her on television just last night and I my husband and I were wowed for sure. She showed them didn't she? You could see the judges holding back the smirks and some of the audience members sitting there rolling their eyes. How superficial people are, we judge without knowing. Good on you Susan Boyle hope your dream comes true! Thanks Pye for introducing this talent to everyone here!

I saw the TV clip as well - loved the looks when she began to sing. Some agent will snap her up, and give her a new look, and she'll be off and running into notoriety. I'll bet that ABC's Good Morning America, wastes no time getting her on their program.

As for the new look, per4haps she should try James' trick with the clippers over the eyebrows. I hope she goes on to do something really good. Lash

It only goes to show. Beauty and grace comes in many forms. Where it is lacking in her physical attributes, it more than reveals itself in here voice. I'm a rocker and normaly I'm into things that are more in that genre. But this lady even caught MY attention. I have no doubt that soneone out there in the industry will attempt to pick her up the days to come.

I've been a pro singer most of my life, and like Susan Boyle, I've never been "pretty", and I've always been significantly overweight, and in a world in which the package is so important, never really got as far as my talents could have taken me. I watched her face as they introduced her, and I saw something that I recognised: she was killing herself laughing inside, because she knew what they were thinking, and she knew what she would do to them. I actually had tears in my eyes watching that video. I cheered at the stunned mullet looks on the faces of the judges. I really don't imagine she'll be allowed to win it, whatever she does from here, she simply doesn't fit the profile, and I'm extremely cynical about this kind of show: it's like professional wrestling, they have decided long before the final who will win, and that will be someone who fits the mould they want. But all power to Ms Boyle, I salute her. Lash

"Looks" never hindered Pavarotti... If she tamed those eyebrows, she'd go a long way to fitting "the mould".

Yes she did have that "wicked" smirk on her face as if she knew what everyone was thinking. I don't know exactly about her not fitting the mold though...Think it was last year but another quite unassuming singer not exactly in the "mold" won...his name was Paul Potts, and he too got the same reaction from the judges and audience...and guess what he won. He sang the song Pavarotti made famous, Nessun Dorma Here's his video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA&feature=relate

BarBara, a small minority of performers have either genius or charisma, or both; the most of us have only varying degrees of talent and maybe stage presence. Pavarotti is one of the former, and for the genius or the charismatic "looks" are irrelevant. I might also add that Pavarotti came to fame in an arena in which looks are not particularly important; just think of Dame Fontaine for example. Lash

I was very disturbed by the initial reaction of the audience and judges. Looks aside... they were at a talent show, this woman passed the auditions, she made it to the stage... what did they expect? But many of them showed genuine skepticism and disgust at the sight of Susan Boyle. What makes any one of them think that they were 'safe' hiding in their chairs in the crowd? I might be THINKING that this could be bad... but roll my eyes and snicker and scoff before the music even starts... how unprofessional...and uncool if they ever have to meet SB in person... unless it's all staged.

LOL--I've actually seen photos of certain singing stars without their make-up on and yikes they can be downright ugly too..LOL. I just bet if the "good" looking famous singers were to come out and perform without the glamour issue, audiences would react the same way as they first did when they saw Susan Boyle come out on stage....with snickers and laughter

I don't think the audience was staged but I could be wrong. I think it is a comment on our society that we have been trained to only see pretty people on stage. The marketers have trained us to equate ordinary looks with no talent and no intelligence so people who are not stunningly beautiful grow up without self confidence believing they are no good. It is very sad. As for the judges, that could have been staged unless they never viewed any of the audition tapes or saw any auditions. However, the same applies to them and probably even more so, they do not believe that anyone should be no stage in the spotlights unless they are attractive and sexy and marketable.

Yes it's a classic case of never judging a book by it's cover. Some beautiful looking people can actually be ugly inside, while someone who doesn't pass the "beauty" test can have a beautiful soul...not to mention a beautiful voice

I saw this on the evening news last night also and again this morning on the morning news show that I watch. That lady is a fantastic singer for sure. It was very rude of the crowd to judge her the way they did when she first come out on the stage but so good to see their mouths drop and their eyes get all big in awe at listening to her and admiring her talent. I loved the look on Simon's face too. This may open up many doors for her career in singing.

Tamara won't be online til next week as her computer has lost Internet Connection, her hubby is sorting it out over the weekend so will be back next week-but at the moment when she tried her hubby's computer she couldn't get into myLot, so am not sure what is happening..will have to wait and see...hugs littleowl

That was a wonderful video, I had seen it on the internet too. I have always thought the judges there to be fairly rude and pre-judgemental, and got a lot of satisfaction in seeing their faces when they realized how wrong they were in their judgements. From what I've heard, Ms. Boyle has been contacted by some music producers. I don't think we've heard the end of her...literally. She was absolutely wonderful.

Wow--she's been contacted by music producers already? Good for her! I was watching some of the other Britain's Got Talent videos, the performers that didn't do so well, and yes, the judges comments can be real biting and cruel at times.

The thing is... will YOU buy her CD? It IS amusing that the audience and judges judged her on her appearance, and then were shocked to find out that she could sing, BUT... would you buy her music and listen to her? I don't own ANY Celine Dion, and she can SING! And she's not 50+. Susan Boyle is the buzz of the internet NOT because she can sing, but because her voice doesn't match her appearance. She a freakshow... unless all you 'fans' actually go out and buy her music.
@sharra1 (6340)

17 Apr 09
Actually you are. You are saying that because she is not pretty that she is a freak show. So you seem to think that people who are ugly should also be useless or untalented because if they are not they are freaks? Most people are very ordinary looking. Talent has nothing to do with looks. Her voice is extremely good. Elton John was not famous for his singing but for the music he wrote. If no one had bothered to market him then you would never have heard of him either. It is all in the marketing and marketing people like nice pretty slim bodies that are all glossy they do not really care about talent it is all airy fairy fluff. Personally I like talent and I do not buy Elton John records. Nor do I judge people by their appearance. Susan Boyle has a remarkable voice but she may never get a record producer to market her because of her appearance and that means she will never get a chance to see if people would buy her music or not.

Yes, I believe I would buy her CD. Those things about her that you think make her a freak show won't be visible while listening to a CD. I grew up in an era (by the way, I'm 50+!) when recording artists were not so visible to begin with, in comparison to today's media exposure. So what if she is 50+. How old is Elton John, Prince, the guys in The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Bette Midler, Cher, Madonna?

THOSE guys got into the business when they were young, and have built on early successes. Even in their day there were many 'flash-in-the-pans'. You can't compare SB to Elton John! Anyways I'm not saying that NO ONE will buy her music, but when it comes down to it, her singing is in a style that doesn't sell well even for the pros. And look at MOST of the winners of other talent contests like American Idol and Canadian Idol... where are their careers now? Nowhere. They're non-existant. Ruben Studdard? Taylor who? Fantasia? Who's that? To Susan Boyle I say good luck but be forewarned... I won't be buying it... and I don't think she cares. She seemed happy just being up there.

What a beautiful voice. Seeing the video and hearing her sing made me cry, too; but it's the good kind of crying because I was so happy for her. Probably most of her life she's either been the butt of jokes or dismissed as insignificant just because she's been found wanting in the looks department. But whether she's a beauty or not, or whether she can sing or not, she still has worth. What a shame we too often base worth on frivolous things.
