You don;'t mess with the Diva

Yesterday I was upset. You see, our conductor told us that we were going to wear white tops and black bottoms because that is what the conductor of the church choir in the town we were singing said his choir was going to wear. It was a combined choir. Well I am the only one wearing white, and everyone else had these marvelous colored shirts and tops. It seems that at our rehearsal the Wednesday before, our conductor made a mistake and he told everyone about it just before they left, but I had gone just after the rehearsal was over because my husband is a semi invalid so I did not hear about the change. Needless to say I was not that happy. I cried all through listening to the other performers and the only time I did not was when we were actually singing. I had a sweater because it was cool, but I still felt out of place. I mean could he not have told us at the beginning of the rehearsal or in the break?

What is wrong with your fellow choir members that someone did not notice you weren't there and call you?! I understand why the director didn't, he probably didn't notice but don't they know you don't hang around? Why did you cry? You were in beautiful and dignified white, contrasting and making the other colors look even more lovely. Without you the others would not have looked so pretty! Talk with the director and tell him you have to leave as soon as practice is over and to please advise you of changes, etc., before or during practice. I'm sure he'll be happy to cooperate once he knows your circumstances.

I was in the second row and I did not look that beautiful contrasting, their colors were really bright and they did not need a white for contrast, but I will talk to the director to tell him that I usually have to leave right after the practice. The trouble is that t we might not have another Spring Mass concert until a couple of years later and it is too cold and with blizzard condition it is hard to travel in winter. And before this, he really insisted that we wear white and said some of us would were colors so it was a mixed and then he said we all wear colors. It was not a few, there were at least fifty of us and us women were in front and when our church sang our pieces there was no large lady from the other church choir in front to hide me.

It might have slipped his mind till everyone was leaving I know I have seen that but he should have known you left before his announcement and should have contacted you somehow.

Well, I guess it is safe to say next time that it would be smart to call them next time to make sure nothing is changed so that you won't have to experience it again. Or tell them to make the changes on paper and put on a bulletin board.

I am very noticeable, being a Diva and people can hear me singing, but when I am practicing my solo they keep on talking. I am rather quiet otherwise.

Oh yes he should have told you. They do the same thing at our church.Only certain people get called and told about changes and important news. And it is a small church too. But,when they are doing a fundraiser and want money, they sure call me and others they know that barely have enough money to pay our offering. But,I wouldn't let it upset you too much.I am sure you looked very nice and no one thought that you looked different. Is your church small?

We have two hundred members so it is not that large. So it is noticeable if someone is not right. That is why we either all wear colors or all wear white.

I hate to be an oddball myself and seems to me that if you're going to tell someone something, tell it to all; I have seen stuff like that happen. My last job there was a need for us all to be at work early and two women arranged to be there an hour earlier than everyone else; Sad to say, the girl wasn't notified; I hate stuff like that, and they didnt call her either.

He could have called all of us to remind us. And he knows my email address, so that is no excuse.

Well, what was the problem with your fellow singers. Why didn't they tell you about the change. I can understand you feeling but your fellow members must have told you. The conductore might not have noticed you in the next day as he might have been busy with his other jobs! i believe every one must have appreciated your work. You did a good thing by performing well. I hope next time you will not be feeling bad.

We were all there and it was his job to tell us what we had to wear. And his wife knows that I have a semi invalid husband and I cannot stay out that long. And he could have told us when everyone came in. Usually they make the announcements before we start practicing, but did not this time. He made the wrong one and instead of looking and saying oops, he waited until after the practice was over.

That is really terrible. However, I like black and white for choir. That's what we used wear. I think the focus should be on the singing! I'm so sorry that that happened though - I really hope you brought it up suspensful! How is the writing going - can I buy the book yet.

As I read your post I could identify with the disappointment you felt, even to the point of tears. Yes, the timing of the announcement could've been better. Even though I can understand your pain, how significant is it in reality? You sang! You enjoyed it. You didn't have laryngitis and the event went on even though you were wearing white when you could've looked much better in color. My suggestion to you is just remember the good stuff and don't sweat the small stuff.
