Here are some common mistakes that make us look stupid. I am sure we all have been there sometime or the other. 1. Loose for lose 2. It's for its (or god forbid, its') 3. They're for their for there 4. i.e. for e.g. 5. Effect for affect 6. You're for your 7. Different than for different from 8. Lay for lie 9. Then for than 10.Could of, would of for could have, would have Any thing more? Keep adding.

I take pride in having passed a writing course and I make grammatical mistakes on a regular basis! You've probably noticed! The majority of my errors are typos; I am a really bad typist, especially when I'm in a hurry. My punctuation leaves a lot to be desired as well. Effect and affect; I often get confused with those. I have erred with apostrophes in the wrong place and here's another one for the list: conscience for conscious.

I have always found you great with your English. So no issues. I have fat fingers and as you have said, when in a hurry, I tend to do a lot of typos. Conscience for conscious, is common error aswell and most make spelling mistakes while writing both.

Mimpi dear! There is also this standard mistake in the use of participle of 'have seen 'being replaced by 'have see' and the like.Incidentally, 'while 'affect' is the correct usage in standard English I also read that'effect' is the American usage. It is accepted.Similarly we have the differences in spelling-- 'practice'-noun Practise-verb, but once again American English uses 'c' for both.I am not sure about'advice' being used interchangeably in American English. To exchange an intersting titbit, this word'loose'apart from the spelling has another connotation.THe post may get too long.Tell me if you would like to know this and I shall write it.

lie, lay, lain, lay, laid --the best explanation is is Wren And Martin --I swear by this. Then there is the standard confusion between'raise and rise','diary and dairy'. And of course we have umpteen misconceptions in the use of articles because people tend to go by the spelling and not the phonetic sound. And here also there seems to be a lot of confusion.

Coming to the mistakes I make, nowadays I tend to skip certain words while typing because my thoughts are faster than my typing or writing. Is age catching up with me?I would not allow it.

I know what you mean. I seldom make mistakes like this except for the times when I get increasingly fatter fingers. And sometimes, my thoughts flies and my finger (I type with the middle right finger only!)struggles - so yet another typo. I am also guilty of not revising my text - that is another matter to be cared for. I feel, we tend to do a lot of mistakes with the homonyms. And 'affect' and 'effect' are certainly not the same.

I find myself making so many of these mistakes, that i feel so embarassed and stupid after i realise it. In addition to the one's that you have mentioned, here are few that i know i keep messing up with dont for don't who's and whose upto and up to alot and a lot allright and all right fourth and forth To and too...this one happens very often Confuse myself between lets and let's I did this once incite instead of insight It seems i could go on and on. then there are The commas get missed out all the time At times i forget to start sentences with Capital letters Names get started with small letters. I miss out on the "s" for plurals. Back to Grammar School ?

That means, we should be more careful about the homonyms for it can really change the meaning altogether. Coming to the apostrophe, I kind of find myself there many times, especially when I am in a hurry. And let's go back to Grammar School, I will love it!

Incidentally,I have not dirsectly answered the question and I went on to my chatty style as usual.I try not to make silly mistakesin grammar; --spellings--normally I am decent and I also try to be proper regarding the usage by reading through what I have written because it makes me feel guilty ;but sometimes in a chatty mood I write spoken English instead of formal English ; regarding typos, I do not fret too much ,nowadays, if in my hurry to post the discussion,I tend to overlook some . Punctuation--I try to be comprehensible but I do get carried away at times.

Anyhow, you have got my point exactly ;we feel bad with so many typos, though nowadays I bother less [after that friend -the one who spoke to me yesterday had mentioned long back'what is a typo or two between friends'?.BTW,what happened?Did you make an inspired guess/Or should I tell you?

I do a lot of grammar errors when i am in a hurry. I don't think that grammar errors make someone look stupid though because they are mistakes and mistakes aren't always stupid.

I sure do make grammatical errors. You've listed those that I can think of at the top of my head. The others that I can think of would be interchanging is/are, dont/didnt, we're/were, do/does, and adopt/adapt. Cant think of anymore. At least not at this time. A bit sleep-deprived. Anyway, Ill get back to this when I think of any more.^_^

Oh man, thanks mimpi but I think that would be the start of a year long 'vigil' on burning the nightly oil. It will be the second week of my senior year in 5 weeks time. I was hoping to get at least a week's rest after the trade fair tomorrow but I got assigned to do something that would be due next week. Sigh..

Hi! Mimpi! LOL!You are on the dot, we keep making such silly mistakes and I do it many times though inadvertently. Some more to your list could be - using weak for week, sea for see, be for bee, ascent for assent, advice for advise, alternative for aleternate, break for brake, buy for bye, cite for site, currant for current and dose for doze, dual for duel, extant for extent, forth for fourth, herd for heard and mourning for morning. Hopefully, others will add few more such examples. Very Good Post!

I admit that i am also weak in grammar and many times mess up with certain words like where to make correct use of in,at,into,of,for and many more.It is because of lack of practice in speaking and writing English. But I think that mylot has helped me in correcting my grammatical mistakes to a great extent. It is a great learning platform.I know it is difficult to master the English language but i am trying to get hold on it.

Hi, Mimpi, I myself being a reacher of English Language and Linguistics do commit some silly mistakes but the sample given by you are not committed by me. Yes i am very conscious so that I do not commit mistakes. Surely I do make typos. I admit the sample you charted are often seen here and I used to wonder what they were. Were they typos or unintentional errors.

Very, very rarely. Bad grammar is a pet pieve of mine, so I aim to be as correct as possible. I have always been a good speller, and it is extremely difficult not to point out when someone else has made a grammatical error. I just sit there and stare at it, getting increasingly agitated. It's weird, I know. But we all have our hang-ups!

I'm sure I make silly mistakes. Grammer was never really a strong point for me. I've tried to make sure I don't mess up some of the big stuff, but I took a grammer refresher course online and realized there were things I didn't even realize I should watch out for let alone did.

I try my best to as accurate as I can in expressing myself in both written and spoken English. Since man is prone to make mistake, every learner, or even experienced people may make mistake while learning or using this language. However, it is prime responsibility of every learner to take extra care and guard himself/herself against the riduculous and silly mistakes committed by many learners. We must respect the languages we are trying to learn. No language learning should be taken lightly, rather it is very serioius job. I love to find out the minute difference between the words and their usages. I like exploring the word and its meaning layer after layer. I love using right word in right place. Choosing right word shows your good grip over your English.

That's a great response! I really appreciate your endeavour and know for sure that this will pay off. We must make sure to check and re check just to avoid silly mistakes. This gives us a great sense of conviction in ourselves.

I always make typographical errors whenever I'm in a hurry coz I'm used to pressing enter once I've typed what I have in my mind without even checking for the spellings. And when I'm about to check, it's already too late, coz I was able to press enter... :)
