I've been watching the new Groomer has it on the animal planet channel. i think its saturday nights. Anyway, they give you a lot of info on grooming etc. also. anyone watching this? My son gf takes her Pekingese to the groomer about once a month. my chihuahua coconut has never been to a groomer but i've been debating whether she needs it. i'd like to take her just to get her bathed(shes terrible about being bathed) and get her nails clipped and her anal gland cleaned since shes never had that cleaned and i hear it should be done now and then. my sons gf says she really dont need groomed as she dont have the long hair, etc. also, she(Coconut) acts like shes having a heart attack when i take her to the vet these dogs are very scared of things. i just wonder if its a good idea. what do you think? anyone got a chihuahua that gets them groomed?

Hi bunnybon7, I think it is a good idea to take your dow to the once a month, I don't think its matter if the dog has long hair or not so give your doggie a treat. Tamara

my biggest concern is wondering if she'd look at it like a treat

My sister in law has one and she just grooms the dog herself, but I would bet that they have alot of people whom have their Chihuahua groomed. I have watched the show a few times but not really watched to much. I no longer have a dog but I am taking care of my moms short haired Jack Russell. If you feel your dog needs to go to the groomers for any reason then you should because it is never good to try a anal gland cleanse at home on your pet unless you know exactly how to do it since you can cause problems if it is messed up or you can puncture something, so it is best left tot he professionals in that area. While your pet is being pampered..maybe you can call for a pampering appointment at a spa or even just a hairdressers..that way both of your will feel pampered.

Well, it would be a nice thing to do for yourselves. I know if I could do it I would..not sure about the pink bows and all but if it helped my dog to be healthier you bet I would. And you always gotta pamper your self on occasion even if it is a at home spa day..I try to do those with my mom. Like a girls day for us.

I think you can just get a good brush and brush her your self, after awhile she will probably like it, I know my cats do.

Sorry I have huskies so I have them groomed professionally about every three months. I wash them when they need it in between. But I have taken a cat to the groomers that would get really upset about going. I then went to the vets and the vet gave me pills to give to him when I took the cat(my grams cat) to him and the groomer. So talk to your vet and see what he says.

Hey bunny! I have never really heard of a Chiuahua getting groomed, but I don't see why not! If she needs a bath and her nails clipped they sure won't say no! As for the anal glands being cleaned, that is usually done by the Vet as far as I know! My cats had that done by the Vet. I don't think that is a Groomers job! If you are willing to pay for Coconut to get a bath and have her nails done the Groomer will be more than happy to oblige and probably give her a nice bow for her hair too!

I also watch this show. I think that it is an incredible show to watch. They sure do show many types of dogs being groomed. I have 2 papillons that go to the groomers about every3 months. They are not the fondest of doing it but they feel better after it has been done. It can always be a good thingto have a dog bathed, clipped nails etc. My advice is just to find the right groomer for your dog.

when you take her to the vet for her annual shots and the like, the vet tech can trim her nails and express her anal glands sure, it costs a bit to go, but once you are there, its not that much more to have those things done. and the more often you bathe the dog, the more she'll get used to it

hasnt gotten used to the bath yet. if she suspects im even thinking of it, (and sometimes i think she can read my mind)she hides and wont come out. funny tho. after the bath she gets all playful and happy.

I wouldn't say groomed per se, but we do take her in about every 3 months and have her nails clipped. I'm afraid to do it since she bleeds easily. She is a little longer haired, since she is half chihuahua and half yorkshire terrier. She loves baths, so that is never an issue for us. But i do ask them to clean her teeth when she gets her nails clipped. Keeps doggie breath to a minimum.

I have two chihuahuas and neither has been to a groomer. My oldest, Tukay (my avatar) was half raised by my cat. The cat sadly is no longer with me, but Tukay still washes herself just like a cat. I've never had to bathe her. The other chihuahua, Boomer is taken into the shower when he needs it, by my step daughter. She keeps a bottle of dog shampoo in the shower for that purpose. I've often wondered if she's ever grabbed the bottle by accident for herself, but of course she'd never own up to it...lol. Too bad Coconut just can't sit and talk to your 'daughter-in-law'...wouldn't that take care of the gland issue?
