School Fundraisers - What's Your Take On Them?

What is your opinion of school fundraisers? My opinion is that I think about half of them are worthwhile. I have 2 school aged kids are are non-stop bringing things home from school in order to raise money. I can think of 5 things from this school year that they did. One thing that bothers me partially is that they ask the kids NOT to go door to door selling to people you don't know, yet they make it a contest school wide. If you sell a whole box you get your name entered into a draw, the more boxes the more entries! I really like the chocolate bar sales because they are mighty tasty, but at $3 how much chocolate can you afford? Then around Christmas they have this other fundraiser in which I can't get anything from. Who spends $10 on Christmas wrapping paper to do about 3 presents. Or $6 for a roll of tape? I can get a 3 pack at the dollar store for $1. The only fundraisers in which I really support my kids at school for are the chocolate one ( a box per kid ), and the Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart, which supports heart and stroke. And to top off the fundraising efforts. They school is always holding events & barbeques to raise money and my kids drive me crazy if I won't take them. At the beginning of the school year they are given "agenda's". Which is a daily planner to write their homework in. They cost $8 a piece and if you have 3 or more kids the third and rest are free. I guess I lucked out having only 2 kids. I could also get these agendas on my own for cheap! So what is your take on the school systems and their fundraising tactics?

I think there are too many of them. My nephews are always raising money for some school function. Fortunately, my sister hasnt hit me up to buy anything from them this year. It is a little bit much to get them constantly. I think there are some that are just too much and are too often.

I know what you mean. I don't currently work but when I do, sometimes it's scary just to go to work because you don't know who is going to hound you to support their kids!... Like I said, I don't mind the worth while causes but all that other junk shouldn't be allowed. It's a rip-off!

i sometimes like them but what i hate is they tell you its to pay for field trips but when its field trip time the kids still have to pay for the trips so i don't get that , i only buy the hoggies they are cheap and taste good

Thanks for replying! I know what you mean! It drives me up the wall..... We only live 20 mins from the next town and thats where their local field trips are and they always cost $10 and they are only gone from the school from 9:15-11:00.... I don't want to pay it but I can't hurt my kids feelings and make them stay back.

My daughter only started preschool last fall and now I have the fun of doing these fundraisers also. I always bought a little bit from my nieces, but usually the food ones. I do think that some are a little outrageous like the wrapping paper and small gifts. So, there is a negative and a positive for them. We will just have to deal with them. I am just glad that I only have two kids that will be doing them.
