Hi fellow mylotters! Yesterday, two of my guy friends had blue highlights put on their hair. And I admit, I was really fascinated because blue is my favorite color. But it also made me think if it was safe or not. Though the dye they used isn't permanent, does it still have adverse effects on the hair? Do you have any idea about this? If you have dyed your hair or had highlights before or now, does it damage your hair?

I have dyed my hair yes and I think that if you keep your hair healthy with frequent cuts and wash it often it will be fine...I have hair that falls out but I've been like that for along time since I have long thick hair..As well as 3 pregnancies can do it...I just recently had my hair streaked at the hair dressers permant red and blonde streaks...

I've used home kits and have gone to the salon for both hightlights & for dye. I think problems really occur if you use too much dye too often and you end up overprocessing your hair ("frying"). The more you do it and the harsher the dye you use the harsher it will be on your hair. I've only heard of it breaking off when it was over processed and done too often. I only do it about every 2-3 months or even longer and I have had little breakage. I got more breakage from using hair accessories than when I didn't use any.

I am in my 30's and I have been dying and/or highlighting my hair since I was in my teens! It never damaged my hair at all either! Actually now that I think of it I can't remember what my natural hair color is because I have been dying it since my teen years!

No, they are not healthy at all. They will cause hair falls and will weaken your hairs too. I have used it in my past and lost most of them from my scalp. So, i would advise you to keep yourself away from those hairdyes. They look good but thre is nothing in this world which has only good side. Ther is a bad side too!

I agree with sanuanu. I had my hair dyed before and due to that I suffered hair loss. Dying hair is definately not healthy as it cause damage to the scalp. I do not dare bying my hair nowadya even if I find that as a trend. I dunt want to be someone who wears wig as a young age. LOL Thanusha

I dyed and highlighted my hair before. To tell you honestly, I did those things for sake of being different. HAHA! Eventhough it is not so safe to do so. And you can read this on the back of the packaging of most coloring products. So everytime you want to dye your hair be sure to be cautious and read instructions first. By the way, I already dyed my hair with these colors: blue black, light gold, light brown, light brown with 3D effect (from Loreal). HEHE. Just want to share! Happy MyLotting!

Hello. I have dyed my hair years ago, well a part of it only, just for fun. My hair's color is black and I dyed a part of it red brown. It was summer that time and it would only last for few months. Well there are some hair dye that can be removed by washing the hair and that I think is fun especially if you just want to try something new or you would go to a party and its theme is related to dyed hair and stuff. We should always remember the effects of it in our hair. In my case, it was just a cheap hair dye but it did not damage my hair. Sometimes brand recommendations from friends help in choosing what brand would not damage our hair if we would do it to ourselves. We can always go to the salon if we have enough budget, in trusted salons I must say. Nowadays they offer hot oils made specially for dyed hair so that would lessen your worry of damaged hair after dyeing it.

I had highlights put in my hair a few weeks ago and it did no damage but it probably depends on the products they use.

I have dyed my hair many times, but I don't want to do it too often, because it is not good for the hair to do it all the time. In the beginning I was afraid to use the permanent hair dye, but one day I decided to take the chance and try to use it, and it turned out fine, I haven't had any problems when dyeing my hair. The hair dye hasn't really damaged my hair in a serious way, but I can't use a normal shampoo when I wash my hair, I need to use a shampoo for damaged hair. When I use the right shampo, my hair doesn't appear damaged at all.

HI and hello there athinapie! ^_^ Yes, I dyed my hair twice. It's color black. Hehehe...It's in the package if you have cellophane your hair. ^_^ I don't like any colors on my hair. And I think it's not bad as long as you know how to take good care of your hair. Those hair colors have lots of chemicals so, if you don't treat your hair well, it will ruin your hair. It's a BIg Nooooo!!!!!

Hello, too!!! Ooh, highlights... they're sooo tempting!! I've always been fascinated with hair color all my life, and I've loved playing with highlights on my hair, despite, of course, the complaints of my teachers, and the stringent rules in school that outlaws colored hair (aside from black), which led me to buy lots of darkening shampoos that I could just leave on my hair for the day, then rinse it off later... Hehehe... Hmmmp... I've had silver blonde streaks in my black hair, I've also tried this burgundy-red hair color that shimmers when the light hits hair, and a friend of mine has tried blue-black. Ohhh... it's really cool!!! The metallic hair colors are cool, but I'm not so sure about the colors that look like crayons on your hair... Hmmmp... I read in a bulletin that the old hair dyes can actually cause cancer... sooo, that's kind of dangerous... but I also saw on a film on TV (I'm not quite sure if it was on travel and living channel or on discovery channel) that there are available organic hair dyes that don't contain ammonia and harmful ingredients but still have the same effect as harmful hair dyes... so, probably you could scout around in your department store or the personal care section and find a few of these dyes... I don't know the price though... Oh, hair dyes and highlights DRY OUT your hair!! Ugh! I've had to use lots and lots of hair conditioners and leave-on conditioners just to make my hair soft and silky and less frizzy... Hehehe... but for now?? I'll just let my blonde highlights grow out then revert to my natural black locks... Hehehe... have a wonderful hair day!!! God bless you!!!

I havn't done that.Because I think it is harm to my hair. My hair is dry.The dye contains chemical substances. the inherent color is more natural

i've dyed my hair before and nothing is wrong with my hair. i guess is how we handle and take care of our hair that really matters.

I've only had my hair dyed once and it was only 2 shades darker than my natural hair color. I let it grow out and never bothered to do it again. I prefer the looks God gave me and believe they shouldn't be altered.

My hair is black. I dyed it grey-brown. Dying does do some damage to the hair. But since my hair is thin, I have to dye it relatively lighter color to make it look thicker.

I tried dyeing my hair before but I never chose a light color. My husband was the one who did it to me at home because we just bought some dye in the grocery. He used a burgundy color so that it won't be that visible to others. You will only notice it when you see my hair under the sun. I did not experience any side effects because maybe we used a quality hair dye. That was more than a year ago and I wish my husband will dye my hair again because I like the color effect under the sun.

the basic thing with hair dyes is it opens up the hair shafts (or something with that effect) that makes the color pigments of those hair colors adhere to hair. it's not natural and even the so-called mild hair colorants advice a lot of care. this even goes to the semi-permanent hair coloring.

I have never dyed my hair or had highlights and have no plan to do either of them . One reason is that I think it will harm my hair to some degree and is also detrimental to our health since there are some noxious chemicals in the dye. Besides I prefer to have my hair in the original colour ,black. People around me always say that my hair is black in a shiny way ,so it seems to be a waste to dye it into other colours.

I have been dying/highlighting my hair for years now. My hair is naturally pretty healthy, as I try not to blow dry it constantly or apply a ton of heat to it, but highlighting really damages my hair and causes breakage, especially if they use a cap versus foils. When I dye it, though, my hair actually feels/looks healthier.
