I have been a collector of books since around the age of 9 or 10 when my grandparents gave me my first 'real book' Heidi which I read a million times over the years. I have also moved a million times and after this last move decided it was time to let go of some 'things'. I am starting with books because they are the heaviest to move. I plan to be working with craigslist and ebay while selling used books as well as some other things. I've listed one set on craigslist but haven't had any interest at this time so today put several sets on my web site - going to have to really work on it though, don't even have prices yet:( Right now I have mostly classics listed such as Mark Twain's collection of novels, a set by Louisa May Alcott and an odd-ball collection of James Michener (author of Hawii) books. So, my question is: have you held on to 'things' for years and years and then all of a sudden decided to 'let go'? What was it and what did you do with it?

I have sold things and given things away that I had held onto for years, not because I wanted to, but because I was forced to. I had a set of classical books that I want to keep onto. There are several pocket books that I might not mind getting rid of, and my husband has a whole set of Louis Lamour books, plus the school books of his father's school. I do not like getting rid of books, but clothes are a different matter. My husband has so many shirts and jackets that he needs a large closet just for them. But I do not know if he still wants them.

I'm kinda the same way - I really don't want to get rid of my books, they've been my best friends for years and years but.... taking up too much space, too many to keep moving (and I know I will be moving at least one more time in my life), and honestly I need every penny I can get so if I can profit a buck a book I'll be happy. I am for sure keeping my favorites and ones I read regularly. I'm horrid with cloths - I get my favorites and hold on to them until they are rags. On my 'rampage' of getting rid of things I've thrown out 2 or 3 big garbage bags of cloths. They were things that no one in the world should wear - bleach stained, torn, totally faded out.

I keep thinking how much it would cost to replace my books. Paper has gone up quite a bit and even though I could get them on audio, it is almost as much or more then they would be if I got them in pocket book size. I usually get rid of my clothes when I've lost weightk, and I have lost a bit but do not want to buy some new ones yet. And I will wear clothes until they fall apart if I have not lost any weight so they go on the garbage anyway.

Oh I was telling someone else here last night I was thinking about how much I have invested in the books (1000s of dollars) and can't imagine what they would cost now to buy new. Sad thing is so many people have given up or don't appreciate the art of just setting and reading a novel :(

I have the same problem. I have so many books they are over taking the house. I know I have to start getting rid of some. I just to thou. *pouts* I have also collected unicorns and a few years ago I got rid of them. Then I moved on to frogs and have a big collection that I have decided need to find a new home. Just hard to find them the new homes sometimes! I have gotten rid of a lot of books at a local troubled teens shelter, surprisingly they said the kids really appreciated it as did the adults. I have also given lots to a local library that has book sales. This time thou as we need some money Im thinking about trying E-bay and a few other places. I used to see on Ebay all the time until it seemed that they stopped caring so much about the sellers. Anyways, I do understand and it is hard.

I know that I got alot of frogs packed away and I need to get rid of them. I guess I thought at least I got that far in as getting them off the shelf. It is hard to get rid of things at times.

LOL - I too am quilty of not proofing most of my writing here, I understand completely :) I figure try them on craigslist (free), then if no response move to ebay (fee), if still don't go then will donate at least some of them so as not to have to move them again. I collect bells, over 300 of them and all but 10-12 have been packed away for the last 10 years :( their going to be next :(

Finally! somebody with knowledge of what a real classic book is!! lol. I was reading Heidi, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, etc as a child. Those were my favorite books. My grandmother owned those books and read as many as I could. I want to have my own collection but they're so expensive. I've held on to alot of things over the years. But, the most precious items for me got lost and I wasn't given a chance to let them go on my own. They were letters, cards, and gifts that my mother gave to me after I was taken away from her. I trusted a friend to keep them safe when I had to go into a womans shelter, and never saw them again. I still have a few things of hers, like pictures and piano books. I can't really think of anything that I have held on to and had to get rid of. However, I see alot of things in my home and I'm think that in the next 10 years I will tell myself to get rid of them. Those will probably be some of my crafts. I have a huge collection of things in my crafts that I don't know where to start sometimes. I also have a lot of piano books, but have no piano. Right now, I can't get rid of them and wonder if I'll do like you're doing, now. Do you have a link to the books you're selling? I've been looking for some classics to add to my little library. lol I can't guarantee a buy, but I'm interested, for sure. Thanks!

You have a very nice collection. I saw a lot of classics that I remember reading. I like how you set up your site, too.

Oh how very sad that you lost those precious items. I too was taken from my mother but I was very young - the only thing I had was a rag doll (I still have it, Ragetty Ann is almost 50 years old and looks it :( I have a whole set of Mark Twain and a couple of Charles Dickens - don't want to get my discussion deleted by placing a link here but on my profile there is a link to my blog and on that there is a link to my web page where I have the first 'batch' of books - needs work though I haven't even priced them. Can you tell I am struggling with letting go of these books? Would love to have you take a look though, my email addy is on the back so if you see something your interested in let me know... I'm going to try to put a link on my profile page later tonight.

I have a hard time letting go of books as well, but the hardest things so far for me are old toys. I didn't have alot when I was young but I bought more and more as a collector and a father. Recently several moves have made me want to slim the collection quite a bit. It's not easy when I have to fight my emotional connection AND my kid's.

LOL - toys :) At one time I had a huge collection of stuffed animals but kids and grandkids help to narrow that collection down - they got soiled, ripped, or taken home. I still have a few but grandkids know they have to be careful with them and are for 'sleeping' at grandma's not playing with.

I don't buy that many books anyway so I try to buy those that I will really like and know I want to keep... so I try not to get into a problem situation where I have spent so much money on so many books yet they are all old and moldy and I don't know what to do with them.

Too much clutter, Faith? Hi there. If you can find buyers, go ahead and sell the books you don't think you would like enough to want to re-read anytime soon in the next 50 years or so. I tried selling old books too. I think I sold one then stopped. I spent like $15-20 on a new book then sell it for 4 bucks. DUH!!! So I just decided to forget about it - I feel cheated, ok? Recently there was a book exchange over here. I turned in 5 books (I had more but they were troublesome to carry and I doubt I can find even 5 books I like in exchange - and I was right - I gave 5 but chose only 4 books which I didn't even like a lot). I understand there are some sites offering book exchange platforms. You might wish to check those if you want. Not too much for me likely because of the cost involved in transporting. Anyway really, I prefer reading those cleaner non-old books that feature spots and bombard with smell. You see, I like to lie on my bed and put the book on my bed to read... I am a clean person and it is mildly distressing I would be sleeping on the same spot the book peed and pooed. So there.

LOL - book exchange, have a place here could do that but the idea is to 'lighten my load' not add to it :) I know the other night I was setting here looking at the stacks of books I'm letting go of and started figuring how much money I spent on them over the years - no way will I get my money back but then if I keep holding on to them they'll be collector's items and worth a fortune :) As for your last comment - my books are all house broke :)

i've always had these principle that if i can't maximize something, i'll probably sell it or give it to someone who can put it into good use. i've always either given or sold stuff to friends, family members, or complete strangers. i've sold some items at ebay but found out that holding garage sales are what works best for me. i just make sure that items are still in good condition when outting these for sale. no sense selling something that will eventually break down and the person who bought it will return it to me after a day or two. as for giving things out, i prioritize family members, friends, and then last in the list charitable organizations. i usually give old clothes and books as well but ther were times that i gave a couple of used but very serviceable household appliances like television sets, electric fans, and one time an airconditioning unit. not really a difficult decision to make as i'm getting something in return whether i'm selling something (money) or giving something away (i fell good about myself knowing i've helped someone). happy mylotting!!! cheers!!!

That's great that you have good luck with garage sales - I've had a couple over the years but felt it was way more work than what I made, maybe I just didn't have the right things for sale.

yeah, i was surprised as well about the good response that my garage sales had over the past few months. i really put a lot of effort in picking out the items i'll be putting up for sale. i also make sure that i put up posters in the neighborhood to announce my garage sales. word of mouth helps as well as i've had customers who come back and bring their friends or relatives along. i'm planning another garage sale by the end of the month and right now, i'm sorting through the items that i'll include. so far, it's mostly clothes and not much books. i guess i love my books more than my clothes!!! hahaha!!! cheers!!!

I mostly do that on clothes but on my books Oh no no no no. Books for me are treasure and I am a bookworm I can't let go of it. Do you know it is not easy for me when someone borrows my books because I am worried that they will not return it on the promised time. My books are precious especially those old ones.

Oh I understand - I hate loaning books because too many times I didn't get them back and they were ones that couldn't be replaced easily.

When our house burned we lost a set of classic books that my husband's grandmother had bought for him when he was born. They were used then so they were almost 40 years old. I hated that we didn't make it out with those. For years, I collected clowns. I had porcelain, ceramic, clothes, music boxes and pictures that hung on the wall. I had over 300 of them when I decided to sell them all and start collecting something else. Now I have gingerbread all over the place!

Oh don't get me started on music boxes. I've collected bells for 35 years and have over 300 but I'm bored with them and will be letting go of them once I get some book piles cleared out. I love music boxes though and have thought of collecting those :)

I am also a collector, byfaithonly. My books take up a huge amount of space in my tiny apartment, and I really do want to get rid of some of them, but i don't know where to begin. I have divided many of them into sets according to the authors in order to make the task easier once I decide to really let go of them. I care deeply for my books and in a perfect world would like to see them all go to a good home.

Yep, that's it a perfect world - I really really don't want to let go of my books and know if/when I make that first sale it's going to be very emotional for me. Most of these have been with me for as much as 30 years or more but I haven't read them in 20 or more years :(

I find it terribly hard letting go of books and anything really. I have sold many many books on Ebay and made quite a lot of money from it, not hundreds but a fair bit. I hate seeing books being dumped anyway, there is always going to be someone who wants 'that book'. selling a book at a boot fair would give you anything from between 20p & £1.00 but on Ebay you get a fair bit more. I love seeing books on book shelves, in the library. I have many books on my book case but I don't read them. I think they look lovely. Mad!!

That's me, at one time I had a whole wall of shelves and could display all my books - I loved how they looked and it just felt 'comfortable' having them around me. Now I don't have room and hate them being in boxes for years... I have never sold anything on ebay but a lady I work with has also sold books on ebay and is talking me into trying it.

I too am a lover of books. I have quite a few of them myself and would love to start selling a few on ebay. I'm fairly new to the world of ebay and I was thinking seriously that it might be a good idea to start making money by selling things. Anyway, I have other things which I've had for years and I'm kind of reluctanct to let go of these items. It sounds like you have a good plan all the same. Good luck. Andrew

I've heard there are a lot of people making good money selling on ebay - I think the secret is having the right items and making sure the shipping cost covers your ebay fees as well as the shipping.

I read it over more than 15 years..but decided to let go because I don't want to have lots of books stuck up inside my room and didn't use it for a long time..it is time to let others read it before throwing away.

I agree, time to let others read my books :) I actually found one book in my boxes that was falling apart, missing cover and such. I put it in the garbage but then pulled it out thinking maybe I'll read it one more time before I let it go.

Good luck selling your books on e-Bay or Craigslist. I am not much of a collector. I do have some old records, 45's and 78's, which could be sold but just never think about selling them. They just take up space. I also have some older baseball cards but will probably give those to our grandson when he gets older. Hope you do well with sales.

I must have nearly a thousand books in my loft because I just can't bear to part with them. I clear out some of them every few years and give them to a charity shop, would never destroy them. As I am going to be retiring soon, I hope to re-read many of them (possibly donate them afterwards), not sure how many I will be able to read. I have quite a few different collections of books, almost all Agatha Christie, all Harry Potter, and a lot of less well known authors.

Yes...I've held on to books for many years and just recently decided that they have to go. I've read them, usually several times and they just have sat around collecting dust. I decided to start taking them down to our local library so that other people could get some enjoyment out of them. I'm doing that as well now with books that I've recently purchased and read. Don't plan to keep them anylonger.
