There has been a trend and sign in my country that many of the students actually do not ask questions, or i can say that they seldom ask and only few of them ask or actively participate in class. The reasons behind it, as i know, are because some of them are afraid that they will ask a silly question that will bring laugh from the other clasmates. Another reason is that they don't really paying attention while in class. How can you ask questions while you're actually do not know what's happening and what's teacher teaching in front?haha. How about you? are you the one who's paying attention and always try to ask questions in the class when you don't understand what teacher is teaching?

I am usually shy in new classes and with new teachers so in the beginning of the year I usually don't ask questions but it is also fairly easy to keep up with. But usually during the second semester when things get harder, I try to ask questions. One of my teachers actually had to make a participation grade because our class was so quite. Very ironic, compared to my other classes where we always get in trouble for talking to much.

I see. Actually it also depends on the teachers too. Teachers who are more friendly and easy going are always getting better responses in class and students enjoy more in the class compared to the teachers who are very strict and fierce, haha. This are merely my experince, i'm not sure this happens at your school or not. Thanks for your comment. :)

Well, I think the only reason what happened actually happened because there are two math teachers and one teacher has like five classes and the other only has one (my class) and it has no one that is exceptionally loud or talkative. Most of my other classes are also larger and the teachers are usually nicer but still as strict so I think that also plays a part in what happened.

i never ask question in class, even dislike.i think everybody knows that when you ask question, you must stand up,then everyone will pay attention to you, which make me feel so bad. so if i have any question about the leason,i will ask it after class alone.

Oh i see. Maybe this is just one of your personalities, maybe you're shy being the attention of others? Asking questions in personal after class is fine too, i used to do that last time too, i just do not want to disturb the progress of teacher's teaching. Thanks for your comment.:)

Yes, I always ask questions in class. I ask questions when I don't understand the topic. Understanding the topic better and having a better explanation enables me to study faster. Also, there is an added grade for participating in class.

Participations in class also can have added grade too? we didn't have it here, hehe. Ya, you've the correct attitude in learning, that should be the way, ideally. But sometimes it's just can't help that we can't pay attention and then didn't have anything to ask due to not understandng the topc. Thanks for your comment. :)

Most of the time I am like that but there are the times where I don't pay attention when I should. But it's alot easier to pay attention and ask question's when it is a subject that I am very interested in or am starting to like. So for it comes down to how interesting the subject or subject matter is.

Haha, ya i'm kinda agree with you. Sometimes the subject is so bored that i can't really pay attention to it although i've tried hard. Another factor affecting this, i think is the teacher. Some of the teachers just have the technique to make it so lively and interesting that he can easily get the attention of the class and continue teaching easily. Thanks for your comment! :)

I guess I have always been the shy little girl when I was growing up, so I seldom participate in class, unless of course we were graded for it. I remember one time in my English class I received a FAILURE NOTICE. This is given to students who are about to fail in that quarter. I had to show it to my parents since they needed to sign it before I can return it back to class the next day. My mom was so mad that it made her cry that night when I presented the slip to her. Then she noticed that I was failing because my Oral Participation was only 1/10 or 10%! She asked me a bunch of questions from my book, which I answered correctly. Then she asked my why I was not participating when I knew the answers to all her questions. Well, I was TOO SHY! I didn't want to be noticed by the teacher. I hated being the center of attention in class! The funny thing was, there was a remedial for everyone who received the notice so that they can have the opportunity to increase their grades -- i got a 100%, which made me the top of the class. Hahahaha.. All the other students who didnt get the remedial were saying how unfair it is that I now got the highest grade, so to be fair, they too took the remedial. Hahahah Bottomline is, I pay attention in class but I seldom ever raise my hands to participate -- both to ask or answer questions.

Haha, that's an interesting experience of yours. You can be that shy until not even to asnwer or ask questions.Hope you're getting better now. Sometimes we really need to voice up our opinion, if not others will assume we're having the same thinking. Actually i was a bit like you last time during my primary school time. I was a shy boy too and do not want to be the attention of others, haha. Thanks for your sharing. :)

I'm a very inquisitive and curious person and I'm not afraid to ask questions in class :) I have reasons why I ask question: first, I wanted to test the teacher's capacity, second, I ask questions because I really want to understand the discussion :)

Oh that's very good of you. Haha, ya it's one of the interesting way to tesst the teacher's understanding and capacity in the topic. Some teachers are just teaching blindly without really mastering the topics. As for me, i'll only ask if i really have the need to know, and when my friends also do not know the answer. Thanks for your sharing. :)

I always pay attention in class and I will always ask question in the class if I have something that I don't understand. It help me a lot by asking question there because the teacher is there and will surely give you the best guidance. But, if I don't I pay attention in class, of course I have nothing to ask. XD

Oh that's the correct attitude to be in learning. We should have asked or speak up our doubt whenever we face it so that teachers may help to make it clear for us. Otherwise, the doubt will just continues and it'll be an unsolved problem in the end. Thanks for your comment. :)

Ya, i'd agree that some of the teachers are just too fierce or strict-looking that makes students hesitate or do not dare to ask questions in class even they've the doubt. Perhaps you may first try to ask or discuss with some of your friends before you go and ask the teacher. Thanks for sharing. :)

Yeah some times I do ask some doubts in the class and also I'll raise some doubts. Some times I feel some what shy/scared of asking but if have a very serious doubt I'll just ask off.Or else I'll ask my friends who are intelligent than me.Basically I will try to catch the concept of the topic, so I'll not get much doubts in the class. Some times I'll raise doubts to divert the topic or when the class is boring. When the lecturer tries to clarify the doubt we will chit-chat...

Haha, that's a funny thing to do in the class. I wonder how will the teacher feel when he realise that his students are just asking the question for fun and then take the chance to chit-chat,lol. Thanks for your comment. :)

I learned in my town school where the teachers are old people and they are seen tough guys. So,we all didn't have guts to raise questions in a class room. Also, the education was spoon fed, that is,they give you notes and all you have to do is,just memorize the answers and repeat in tests. And we are really afraid as they would tease us,if raised a question. But things are different when I joined my college. It was a new college then and the staffs are young chaps. So we felt free to ask questions. What worse was, they are not educated or trained staffs so that they couldn't clear our doubts. In fact, they felt offended. So,we had to rely on the library to learn of our own.Cheers!

I see, that's the pros and cons of having elder people and young people as the teacher. Well we can say that the outlook and personality of the teacher also play some kind of role in this case, haha. Seems like students tend to be more participative in class if the teacher are friendly or easily approachable. Anyway, teachers shouldn't get offended when their students ask questions, it's their job to clear the doubt, provided that the students are asking in a good manner or proper way of course. Thanks for your comment. :)

Actually,i am a person that do not like to ask question in class and my results wasn't good either.I don't know the reason behind it,it may be because i am too shy to ask questions infront of the whole class.I know i should ask questions when i don't understand because that will help in my learning and thus, improve my results. So now,i have been asking more and more questions in class because it will benefit me in my studies.

I do not ask question in class too, but if I am puzzled with something about the course, I ask the teacher alone after the class. Many students in my class raise their hand immediately when they have question, sometime they even speak to the teacher without make a gesture. Usually, our teacher do not mad about this, they like the students give questions, and we never laugh at these students.

I see, i'm some sort same as you, i mostly ask questions after class or meet teacher in person. It's really a good culture in your class that the students are so eager to ask question and actively participating in class. I believe, as a teacher, he or she will feel happy too if students are interest in his or her teaching. Thanks for your comment. :)

I'm interested in the topic.I have scanned many views before I start to add my comment. As for me,I can cath up with what the teacher says. Therefore,I seldom ask questions in class except when the teacher gives a wrong explanation or I have come up with a new method.Different methods to a question are usually welcome in my class. In this way,I can participate in the class actively and aquire a better understanding of the question.

Hihi..thanks for your comment. :) Oh it's good that you can catch up all the teachers' teaching in class, and that's good also to raise up different methods or different views on the topic. This helps to generate and practice on lateal thinking. i believe you enjoy your class well. Good luck to you in your studies.

Im from Malaysia, where the learning culture is to listen and absorb what the education wants the student to know, and then make sure you yourself must adapt to the examination in order to obtain better education in future... Asking in the class makes me learn quicker and more efficient.. It helps me in my studies but i do not sure whether it is useful for others

Yaya, that was exactly the culture here, haha. It's good that you ask questions in class, it helps to clear your doubts on that topic. Anyway, sometimes it also depends on the teacher, he or she has to be able to make it clear for you. Thanks for your sharing. :)

I am usually attentive in a class, if its not so boring, and will ask questions only if iam really in doubt, i like to ask questions but will avoid silly or simple questions and make my question relevant to the subject which the teacher will also enjoy to answer

Oh that's a good one. Maybe you can try to ask from your friends first before asking teacher. If friends can't help, then only ask the teacher after class. That's whay i usually do. Thanks for your comment.

To tell the truth i never ask questions in class. ofcourse that does not mean that i understand everything that is said. i usually try to clear my doubts by myself (i.e. referring to other similar topics etc.) in case that i still could not understand it , i will then go to the professor and ask him/her. the real reason for doing this is because of fear of asking a silly question, but one advantage i get from this is that i could understand the topic better when i try to learn by myself rather than by asking others.

Ya, one of the main reason for students not asking questions is that they're afraid that the question they ask will be a silly one. Perhaps that's a good way to understand the topic too by learning and refering to the books or other sources. But this will have some risk on it, because sometimes we may get misunderstood and we'll thus keep on the wrong concept without knowing it. Thanks for your sharing. :)

In my old days, we never ask question in class, but only answer questions raised by teachers. Yesterday, I had a chance to attend a sunday drawing class with my grandson. From time to time, little boys and girls raise hands to ask questions, express opinions, making suggestions, demonstrate their drawings. They are five or six years old. They like the preschool classes, and feel equal with the teacher. I wonder if such preschool teaching method could extend to the soon coming primary school.

Yeah, that's one of the traits that we should even have to learn from our children. They're so naive and their thinkings are just straight forward that they'll speak up almost everything in their mind. Perhaps it's the pride that in oneself that makes him or her hesitate or reluctant to ask questions as one grows up. Thanks for your comment! :)

I don't ask questions too often in class, nor do I participate in class discussions because I feel like I'd rather ask my professor about it after class.
