a piece of your food falls on the ground and you pick it up... do you eat it or throw it away?? Moms have always done the "5 second" rule, if it just drops and you blow on it...does it make a difference??...LOL this is just for fun, I am very curious to see how people will responde to this, however it was done on Mythbusters and that caught my attention and I wanted to ask it here.... so do you believe in the "5 second" rule... ??

Yes I do that but only when the place where the food fell is clean as I look with my naked eyes. I still eat whatever has fell as long as they just fell from my hands and not from the hands of other. I am not too strict when it comes to this rule you are talking about because we also need bacteria in our body. If the food falls on the ground with grass I will no longer get and eat it. But if it has wrapper of course everybody would still love to pick it. But if the food fell from the table to the floor made of tiles, clean wood or any clean material, I will still pick it even after 10 seconds or more. Of course the longer the food has fell let's say five or more minutes then dirt may already have attached to it. And I see nothing wrong in picking foods from the ground as long as it is clean and not smelly.

Hahaha...I pick it up, if its dry food and also if I a at home. And if its choc'lates or chips, I just cannot leave it on ground like that. I have to have it popped inside my mouth sneakily!

Hello, For the most part nope . If I drop something on the counter then maybe . It depends on what you are eating as well . meat falls on the floor(esp raw) no way then . I guess some people just dont care . Do you really get germs or all that sick . For me it would be getting dirt , pets hair , and what not on the food . so maybe that is it

well the saying has been if food drops on the floor and you pick it up within 5 seconds then the food is still good enough to eat.... so there is a show here in US that is called Mythbusters where this group of people test the myths out to see if they are confirmed or busted... and with this test it was busted... the food was still dirty....LOL happy mylotting and have a great day!

When I was younger growing up, I believed in the 5 second rule but to be honest with all of the germs and the diseases now a days I am very cautious with eating anything that has touched the floor. I have seen that being covered on mythbusters but I have to also say that we don't want to get ill because of any germs that have come in contact with the food that has touched the ground.

In Indonesia, we have rather different rule. It is not "5 seconds" rule, but "5 minutes" rule & I don't follow that rule.:D I usually throw that fallen food away if I find it's dirty.:D

The five second rule is sometimes true but it depends on the food that falls on the ground. The more moist the food has, the more e-coli will stick on the food. :)

1/5 th of the population on the earth is suffering from hunger. UN should approve the 5 second rule. We are known to waste at least 60% of food, starting right from faulty farming habits, to storage to simply wasting food as in restaurants or making lots of food and letting it decay or go to waste. 5 second rule , rules! If we start thinking bout germs and other stuff, I've got more info for you. Just in america, you can indirectly eat one ton(lbs) of insects in a whole year which may have intruded your food through faulty storing or packaging.

Hi Funny but I think the rule varies. I have heard of 10 seconds, 20 seconds and even 30 seconds! Anyway, the rule only applies for me if the the floor we are talking about is our floor in the house and the piece of food that fell is dry. I mean, like a piece of chocolate, bread, or a potato chip. If the food is something damp or soggy, then no way. Have a nice day!

I never eat anything off the floor even if its only a second. I am just funny like that. I doubt that it would be harmful to eat something off the floor. I just dont want to.

No way! That's yucky! I can't live by the 5 second rule. If it fell on the floor, the dog can have it. lol At least it won't go to waste. So what did Myth Busters say about it? Is the 5 second rule true? I have a feeling it's not.

LOL, yes you are right... it is still dirty food when it falls on the floor no matter how fast you pick it up... I was very interested what people will have to say about this, I think it is going to go both ways alot... LOL thanks for responding and happy mylotting.

Ok, so I used to believe the whole 5 second rule thing basically cuz I didn't care too much... well as long as it wasn't on the ground too long. But recently I heard that hard surfaced foods like candy don't really pick up any dust or bacteria, but foods that are phorus pick up bacteria easily.... so the softer it is the more you might want to say no to picking it up and eating it.

Yeah, I dont know how healthy it is to do this.... but if we are at home, then it seems more safer to do than out in public...LOL happy mylotting and have a great day!

No, it doesn't really make a difference to the 'dirtiness' of the food, but it's an excuse to do something not culturally accepted (eating food off the floor).

i don't believe in 5 second rule. the floor has a lot of germs and bacteria on it, so once the food fell, it'll be contaminated with germs. i won't risk my health for a piece of food lol :P

I know, its hilarious to think and whats funny is I would say that the responses were about half and half... some do ...some dont!! LOL for me it really does all depend on the food and the floor where it drops... if I am at home, well I am constantly cleaning up after the kids... but somewhere else is another situation all together!! LOL happy mylotting and have a great day!

I've always folllowed the 5 second rule pretty much. If it doesn't look too terribly dirty, I might wash it off and go ahead and eat it. Kathy.

Yes with our 3 year old granddaughter we practice the rule but only in our house. It usually doesn't always work though because most of the time the dog gets to it first. We never allow it in public areas or even in the backyard. That would be to disgusting.

I agree it is easier to practice in our own homes vs out in the public...LOL --and we dont have a dog...yet... but my hubby keeps pushing for one...then it wouldnt be a problem the either, the dog would get it... happy mylotting and have a great day!!

well to add more silliness. The bacteria havent discovered it is a good food because they run away from it when they saw it falling towards them. So therefore the next five seconds is that the bacteria havent decided yet.
