there was once an etiquette book that i read twice but lost memory of that deals with the percentage of how much to tip depending on the environment and the amount one actually paid. any insight?

I think that it depends on the place and the amount of people and percentage of the bill. I typically look at about 10% and if it is really good then go up from there. If it is really bad then it will go down to even nothing if it is so bad. If you have a large party or lots of people making mess like my three children when they were younger then I would increase it too cause many times the waitresses share their tips with the bus boys too.

i somehow remember that 10% thing in that etiquette book. gosh, i miss that book. it even tells you how to tip the different people in a hotel, for example, depending on their positions. thanks for the post .

The base amount you start from is 15%. Personally I like to start at 10% and go up or down from there.
