Are You A Fast Eater Or A Slow Eater?

I have always been a slow eater, myself. I just never could eat fast. My parents never had any problem with me being a slow eater. They always told me it was the best way to eat. You don't get choked for one thing. You also don't gain weight when you eat slowly. I'm aware that some people who work have to eat fast because they are only given a limited time for their lunch break. Then, there are some people who don't get a lunch break at all. There are also some people who have to eat fast in order to keep up with their spouse. What about you? Are you a fast eater or a slow eater?

I am a slow eater compared to my family members and my boyfriend who takes only few minutes to finish a plate whereas I can take up to 1 hour or more to finish my dinner, so I think it is just a matter of appreciating the food you are eating instead of eating fast just for the sake of eating.

Hi med889! I eat slow but not as slow as eating your dinner for 1 hour... Anyways, I appreciate how you appreciate the food ^_^

Thank you for appreciating my appreciation for my food ;-) I don't always take so much time I have to admit but sometimes when I feel to then I take time to finish my plate.

I eat super fast. I get an hour for lunch... I spend about 5 minutes eating, even though I know I have more time. Then I relax through the rest of the break :D.

I am actually the same way, I get done with eating in 20 minutes at the most and then I relax until it's time to start working again.

I am afraid that although I shouldn't really do it, I tend to eat fast. But I am beginning to slow down now a little. I guess I eat fast because my father was a very fast eater and kids tends to copy their parents. I remember that he always seemed to be very busy and in a hurry to get back to his work, so meals seemed to be a necessary problem for him.. - Derek

Hi Kathy... Thanks for comments about my avatar. I grew up with horses. We used to breed palomino riding ponies and it was great fun breaking and schooling them. They had the run of around 40 acres and it was fascinating to watch the stallion herding them together to move them to different places on the land. He was very protective of them. - Derek

My daddy was a fast eater. Mother always tried to keep up with him. However, I was a slow eater, myself, like I said in my discussion. I just never knew how to eat fast. I like your avatar, btw. I'm a horse rider, myself. Kathy.

Hey Cyrus: I'm a slow eater now mostly because my teeth have so many problems and for I don't know how many years I've suffered with acid reflux, so I do eat very slowly now; Back when I was still working my two jobs before I had to go on disability, yeah we had to eat fast on our short lunch breaks...talk about ACID REFLUX!!!! have a great weekend!

I have acid reflux and I know what you're talking about. At least I think I do. The last time I went to a heart specialist, I was having chest pains and he said it was either due to my mvp or some acid reflux that I wasn't aware I had. Anyway, I've always been a slow eater even when I was a child. Daddy was a fast eater and whenever we would go out to eat, he would just get up and go do something while mother would wait on me to finish eating. She always had the most patience. Kathy.

I tend to be quite a slow eater and it's interesting you mentioned lunch breaks; I work from home now, but when I was working in an office and I had errands to run in my lunch break it used to be a real struggle to find enough time to eat! My husband eats quite fast and has usually left the table and has started the dishes by the time my daughter and I are anywhere near finished. I agree that it is a lot healthier to eat at a slower pace, much better for the digestion!

What kind of work do you do from home? The reason why I'm asking is because I thought it might be something I would be interested in. I'm looking for a job where I can work from home. I'm looking for something that will supplement my SSI check. Right now, my family is helping me but they're not going to help me forever. Do you work on the computer? Kathy.

I am the fastest eater. For example, one day my partner and I went with another girl to the ice cream shop. I ordered the biggest size they had, about a pint and a half. strawberrycherry and the girl we went with both ordered the medium sized bowls. I ate mine and the other girls before strawberry was half done with hers. And don't get me started on hot dogs! I'm not sure where you are coming from when you say " you don't gain weight when you eat slowly" It can't have an effect on how many calories you receive and eating fast means you are more active which would burn more calories. I would like to know more, any clarification? My spouse could never keep up with me lol.

That strawberrycherry sure soundsgood. I love cherry, anyway. Actually, eating slowly isone of the ways to keep from gaining weight. You still have to watch what you eat, your calorie intake, fats, etc. I never did know why it keeps you from gaining. That's just something I was told one time. Several of the mylotters here have said that eating slowly gives your mind, your stomach, your body, or whatever time to realize that you are full. Kathy.

One mylotter said chewing your food slowly gives your brain more time to process the action and therefore youdon't overeat. Happy mylotting! Kathy.

I am a slow eater. When i was small my dad used to tell me that i am the man who eats last. Now i eat at a average speed.Eating slow helps the food get digested well in the stomach. It also gives health and nutrition in the body.If we eat fast then most of the food will not go into body and it will not give nutrition to the body.In functions where there is a big line we need to take less amounts of food and eat fast.

I am a fast-eater. I just could not eat slow that I have to prepare a glass of water with on the table to prevent myself from choking. One time, my sister told me to slow down because the food is still hot, but I was not listening. I accidentally burn my tongue because I swallowed the spoonful of hot rice. Too bad!

I'm the other way around. I can't eat fast, myself. I just never knew how. I'm glad I can't, though, because like I said, I know it's not good for you. I like to eat slowly and enjoy my food and good conversation. Kathy.

I am a very slow eater. I eat fast only at work. Even when I'm with my boyfriend I eat slow, I shouldn't have to speed up just because he wolfs everything down. But he is very impatient about it. He leaves and wants to go do something as soon as he is done even if I am only half done. Its not actually true though that eating slow helps you not gain weight though unless you are just eating less in a certain time frame.

For me,I'd say I'm a fast eater.I talk little while eating.Maybe that's why I usually eat faster.Although I know It's not good for my health to eat that fast,I just fail to change the habit. Now I don't pay much attention to it,so I can eat at the pace that I'd like to keep. It's the delicious dish that is important to me.

I am a fast eater. my parent are fast eater too. so we dont face any problems. my freinds are also eating fast. I know that fast eating is harmful in many way it may choke us, early satitey, weight gain. but my habit is not improving. beside I dont get time to eat slowly. i have to rush to collage after my lunch. eating while watching TV or MUSIC is also harmful. because you not have easy satity & could result in heaviness of stomach.

As I said, I'm a slow eater, myself, but I watch television while eating all the time. I've always done that pretty much. It's just something for me to do while eating, I guess. I remember when I was in high school, I would come home and get a snack and watch "Dark Shadows". That was a scary soap opera that used to come on in the afternoons back in the '60s. I would also watch "Where The Action Is", which was a musical show with Dic Clark. Kathy.

I don't think it's a waste of time at all. If you're in a hurry and you have a job you need to get back to, it might be. Otherwise, it's a good time to bond with friends and family. It's also a good time to enjoy good food. As one mylotter said, it shows respect to the cook. Kathy.

Yes I am a fast eater!Mainly because it became a force of habit! I use to be a rice farmer with my family in Australia(Yes we grow rice here)Anyhow at harvet time when we would take a truck load of rice to the Silos in town we would buy some lunch and take back to the paddock to eat! Being harvest time the quicker you could get the crop off the better! So we would eat our lunch as quickly as possible and then get back to harvesting! My Brother was a big guy and a big eater as well,so I had to eat quickly at times to make sure I did not miss out!I would say now I eat a bit slower than I use to as I have a little more time! Got out of Farming several years ago! Best thing I did!So I think it comes down to the lifestyle you have and what upbringing! There are so many different factors that govern and shape our lives every day! This sort of things can also have a great effect on our Health and Family!Thats it for me Bye.

Hello jay1767! This sounds like interesting work! I always thought I would like to be a farmer. I know it's hard work because my daddy did a little farming on the side. I never did do much farming, though. Daddy didn't expect us girls to do any of it and mother never cared anything about it, anyway. He (daddy) was protective. I used to be in the 4H club. My cousins and I used to raise calves and show them in the calf shows. I mainly rode the horses. I always enjoyed doing this. I didn't know youall had rice in Australia. You learn something new all the time. You said you got out of farming several years ago. What do you do now? Kathy.

Yes, I think it's important that we enjoy our food. Like I said in my discussion, I just never could eat fast, just never have known how. I think it's good that I never knew how, though, because it's not good for your digestive system to eat too fast. Some people have to eat their lunch fast because they have to be back at work by a certain time. This never was the case for me when I worked and for that I'm thankful. Kathy.

I am a fast eater myself and normally try be that way.Since my childhood I was a bit more inclined towards food and have since developed this habit. This habit is indeed a very bad one because you stand a risk of food getting stuck and also tend to gain weight. But in the contrary it gives me a edge over the slow eaters as it helps me complete my food in stipulated times like lunch breaks.I sometimes pity on slow eaters who are left lo and behold being unable to complete their food and having to stay empty stomached.

I never realized that there was a risk in the food getting stuck. This would be a scary situation. I'm glad you brought up this point. I have a nephew who is four years younger than I am and he has always been a fast eater. He used to go on trips with my parents and me when we were younger. As I mentioned in my discussion, my parents never had any problem with me eating slowly. My nephew sure did, though! He used to complain about me being so slow! Kathy.
