sad to say, there is something we do need my sons gf for. shes away for the weekend at her kids. my son used to think i was the best cook in the world although he hasnt complained, i can tell he misses her cooking. when i cooked a lot was when the kids were growing up and since i was pretty poor then due to marrying men with no ambition to work except the last one, i never learned to do gourmet.i had to cook what i had and make due with only least ingredients. my cooking is not good for colesterole! its plain ole southern country stuff. now Agra, sons gf, always had money as she married men with means. So, she cooks gourmet style. she cant make something if she dont have all the ingredients. it just wouldnt taste right I had a male friend years ago that said he'd never even date her because she was what he called "high maintenence" sorry to say,i enjoy the old bacon, eggs, fried taters, etc. of days before colesterole scares. so what kind of cook are you? and for the guys, can you cook? my sons all can cook for theirselves but dont like to. LOL!

I love cooking and I am told on a few occasions that I am a good cook usually by other people then my husband who never compliments my cooking. So it is good to cook for others and hear them say that it was delicious and I am a good cook. I Love cooking gourmet and love the taste and flavors but I will try to cook a meal even if I don't have all the ingredients I will substitute or make it into something different, always been that way experimenting on foods. I do however cook mostly like you probably. My husband doesn't like what he calls fancy food and would rather just have the kind of foods he was raised on. Soup beans, fried potatoes, corn bread, sauerkraut, fried chicken,gravy,biscuits,.etc.. He isn't the spaghetti or Lasagna type or spicy foods. So alot of the times I might cook two meals since we hardly agree on what to have for supper. I think I am a good cook, I love cooking and take alot of joy cooking something that someone is going to get pleasure out of eating..I didn't have alot growing up and sometimes food was slim pickin's but it was filling and that is what really counts.

yes most men dont compliment for some reason. my son usually has to for she will say didnt you like it? the problem i have is that she will not substitute, she says oh, that just wont taste right. yes you probably cook a lot like i used to. many times i've had to substitute things and everyone was happy with a little different taste. im not saying shes not a good cook, cause she is. it just makes me feel im not as good any more with it since my son didnt say much about it and he talks all the time about how she makes this and that. im thinking her cooking is the only thing he keeps her for. so maybe the way to a mans heart is through the stomache?

I've been told I'm a good cook, but I cook very simply and seldom venture out into anything different. However, my daughter is a cook in a high brow restaurant and she brings me some delicious and complicated gourmet type of food now and then. I'd never cook it, though, because I think it's a treat, not an every day kind of food. I was raised on fried potatoes, bacon and eggs and milk gravy, whole milk, lots of pork and a lot of beans and that's what I cook now, except for the pork and I'm allergic to it now. It's interesting to me that there weren't nearly as many heart attacks 50 years ago, when people were eating that kind of food.

oh, thats exactly what my sons gf was saying not so when i told her the same thing earlier today. i said the same as you did. i dont think its the same food these days. i think its how they raise and process what we eat now.

I think you're right. What passes as food now might be tasty, but it's poor nutrition and heaven only knows what's really in it. I'd rather take my chances with real food.

I too enjoy cooking, but just plain wholsome food. I too cant go for the gourmet stuff. I make do with what is available and make a meal which tastes good. Now I have a cook who comes alternate days after I fractured my knee to do the cooking. We eat but Im sure my family misses my meals at times. My son has never cooked, he knows how to make eggs, thats all. My husband cooks at times. As you say, her cooking must be really costly. One must learn to cook with whats available and still make a good meal from that. Cheers.

Well well, just relax and enjoy her cooking. Maybe see it as a gift from heaven. Just eat, dont forget to appreciate whats good and enjoy. At least you dont have to do the cooking. lol. Put your feet up and watch your favourite programme whilst she sweats herself out in the kitchen. What a life. !

well its her job in the house in fact. although she complains a bit and tries to get my help which i do if i feel like it. otherwise,if i dont i ignore her. she pays less on the rent because she dont get as much income, therefore she volunteered to be the cook for her part.

Depends on who you ask. My kids love my cooking, my grand kids love my cooking nad want me to teach them how to cook. My husband... he doesn't want me to show him up so he says I am the worst cook in the history of the universe. Simply cause he used to be a fry cook at a Sambo's MANY years ago but to hear him tell it, you'd think he's been a world renouned master chef for the last 40 years, instead of a fry cook at a greasy spoon 40 years ago!

Oh no.. he didn't want to be the cook -just critize me! IN these past years now with no kids.. I did just stop cooking. He can make his own and I will eat what he makes or make my own. I did 3 a day for 25 years in spite of it all... now I am retired from it!

I am sorry but I am considered to be cooking at home because I am a guy and my mum doesn't allow me to cook at home. Yes, these days people need to learn about colestrol and all but it doesn't mean that old style cooking has no value. Yes, I do like old style cooking but we just need to take care of oil that is it? Is "Agra" a name of your son's gf?

i really think boys need to learn cooking same as girls. funny thing, my boys cooked some when they was teens, like when they were home late from a date or something and missed dinner. one of the girls would say to them, that looks good, make me some and lots of times they'd make their sisters some. sorry to say that my sons gf is not actually named Agra. its a nickname i've given her on here. for aggravating as shes really put me through it at times.

I am really really sorry becaue the first line of my respnse must be read as: "I am sorry but I am not considered to be cooking at home because........" @Alice: In any case I would love to have food from my wife's hands after my marriage and would help her around on weekends. Does that make sense?

I enjoy cooking and my basics are all the old favourites that I learned from my Mum. I have learned to do Italian and I do a few stir fry variations . I stick to the plain ole salads but I always get my daughter to do a Greek salad and a Caesar salad...she is tops at those...they just don't taste right when I do them. I rarely try new things and only sometimes will I incorporate some new dish into my repertoire.

Hello bunnybon7, I never cooked when I was single. As I come from a big family with six elder sisters, I had no worries about what to eat. My mom is a good cook, so are three of my sisters. The rest learned how to cook after getting married like me. I am happy now that I can cook some delicious meals for my husband and son.

Well, I have been dieting and have learned quite a bit from the trainer I had for a period of time. I tried to eat grilled or baked meat. Not fried foods or salty stuff. And sugar is a thing of the past for right now anyway. I have about 75 more pounds to reshift [haha] and try to lose completely. I like to eat as naturally as possible. I fix alot of salads and maybe some shirimp or tuna on it. Use alot of herbs and spices. Drink alot of water and try to stay away from sweet additives and pop. I like to fix beans and casseroles in the winter. Soups and such. My grandma always had a soup on the back of the wood burning stove. She fixed meat and potatoes every day. She was a very good cook. My mom was too. I come from Irish heritage and love my potatoes. You don't have to frie those tators you know. you can do double cooked ones. Boil them til they are tender. Then add onions, green and red peppers and a few eggs. Some herbs or spices that your crew likes and bake it to perfection. Stick it under the broiler for a few minutes to brown those little suckers if you want. Good stuff.

I'm the survival cook! I make lots of casseroles and such so I only have to cook every other day! my husband, on the other hand, is the gourmet chef. He doesn't make alot of things, but when he does, it's wonderful! Home made raviolis, etc. We have a good friend who is a chef by trade and he's always calling him for advice on cooking whatever he wants to cook! Too bad he doesn't want to cook more!

I have never been a great cook. The only thing I can say is that I can cook very basic meals which just pass as a cooked meal. I get more compliants than compliments so I don't have the confidence to experiment with different foods. The worst complaint I got was off my husband. I though one night I did my best mashed potatoes. Normally when I do it, it tastes watery. This night, I felt that it was the creamiest I have ever made them even though it was not the best. My self esteem was high and I was proud of myself. My husband said to me that the potatoes tasted like dishwashing liquid. That really crushed me. So I told him that he can make mashed potatoes from now on. Now, I don't have the confidence to cook nice meals now.

I consider myself a good cook. I used to cook more when my children were home but now its just my husband and me. My husband is not a picky person there are some things he does not like and I do such as mushrooms so I have them on the side for me. He likes what I cook and eats everything I cook.

I consider myself an average cook...period. Both hubby and son are dependent on me so they better eat and praise whatever I serve...but I have a very sensitive tongue so if something is amiss, nobody need tell me about it. AND I too believe in cooking the old ways when there was no scare of cholesterol..I too cook within my budget i.e. no gourmet cooking for me, neither do I have all the apparatus to rustle up gourmet food. And let me tell you something...gourmet food would always taste nice even without the cook coz the ingredients themselves are expensive and tasty...the trick of a good cook lies in rustling up tasty wholesome food from the daily basic ingredients...so take heart.

I'm pretty sure I've never been considered a good cook. I like you cook on a budget. I feel like most of the time it's just as healthy and I would rather spend the money on something other than $15 steaks! I try to get creative, so it's not just mac and cheese, but if I want something gourmet, I'd rather just go out to eat and let someone else do the cooking and clean up.

I love cooking but am not good at cooking all the good stuff. I guess I took a lot from my mother. She has a few wonderful recipes to die for: like for example her lasagne aretotally special. My mother in law is a fantastic cook and definitely my husband still thinks that she is a much better cook than me. Pity for me and maybe even for him since he misses her cooking, but I am trying my best. He does tell me for example that my spaghetti bolognese or my shepherd's pie are much better than his mum's and I am happy with that. I cannot bake cakes as she does and I love eating the sweets she prepares!! My husband loves to eat and there are a few dishes I tried to prepare that compare well to his mum's: chicken pie and spinach pie. And my husband knows how to cook and sometimes he does: one of his best recipes is pasta with white sauce and gorgonzola. Very good!
