Nine o'clock is definitely not the time of solicitors - Fortunately here most apartments here (the ones I lived in anyway) are equipped with "peepholes" on the front doors, little holes with lenses to look out to see who it is on the other side. Another house I lived in the 70s had a smaller door, about 4 x 6 inches, to open and look to see who is there. With the current peepholes however, I have always wondered if there was some kind of device someone could use to counteract the wide-angle lens to look inside my apartment! It could be a neighbor in need, whether a victim of a violent crime or to borrow an egg or two for the cake she needs for her daughter's birthday cake ...

Me personally, NO. Unless I knew my friend was coming over. Not only that I have a "peep" hole on my door so I can see first. As for my husband, he would answer the door at all hours with a 9mm ready to go. :) I dont take chances. I love my family too much and I'm a female and I'm vulnerable.

I think that, since you don't live in a good neighborhood, that you shouldn't answer the door late at night unless you're expecting someone but you should also do something to keep an would be intruder from trying to get inside, believing that no one is at home. A tape recording of a large dog barking is one way to keep them out. You could keep the tape recorder near the door and switch it on if someone knocks.
