going home

Many of us have moved away from our original home lands or towns. How do you feel about going back even if just for a visit? I have been away for over 20 years and I am somewhat afraid to go home, what if it's changed so much I don't know how to get around there. If I only go home in my mind it will always be the same, kind of a security blanket.

I left my home country 37 years ago so as much as I would love to go back and take a look at how it is now, I don't really consider it home because when we left I was a kid so I call right here in Australia, home. It would be good to visit my city of birth in Italy though; I did go back 20 years ago and I'm sure that it has changed a lot in 17 years! I find that when you return to a place you haven't seen in a long time it is usually smaller than how you remember it. Have you found that?

In the US places change a lot, Very few stay the same, my husband came from a very small town and it is still much the same, but I the town I came from has increased so much in size I wouldn't be able to find my old house. Thanks

My Granddad bought this Farm in 1905, and our family has lived here ever since. My Father was born in the front bedroom in 1905, (he was first family member to be born on this farm) and I was born in the same bedroom 28 years later.(in 1933). The road past the farm was named after us, about 5 years ago. My oldest son will own and Farm this land in the future. About 10 years ago my wife and I began spending the winter in south Texas. We have purchased a Mobile there in a seniors park. Its a fun winter holiday that we have grown to enjoy immensely. I guess the Farm is a security blanket for me too.

Both my husband and I come from farmers but we are so far removed from them that it just isn't possible to identify with that life anymore.

I am one of those who work so far away from my "orginal" home lands. I try to make sure that I go home each year to visit. I admit that somehow, I feel that I am not part of it anymore but nonetheless, my visits are one of the things that I look forward to. This is my way of making sure that I stay connected to my roots.
