Would you save money by not turn on the A/C at home?

So, summer is here. We all experience the sizzling hot summer before, and we just need the fans, and A/C to keep us through the hot summer time. Would you rather living frugally, and not to turn on the A/C at home? Because sometimes the temperature reach up to 90 or 100 degrees, even with a fan, you just can't stand the heat. My boss told us that once, at home, he intended to save money, so he didn't turn on the A/C for the whole summer. I just wonder how could he stand all these heat at night. I just couldn't sleep at night.

we dont have a/c here in my house, but if ever i do and if we are saving money because of financial crisis, well i could do just that, turn it off to save money... even if its summer, we can open the window all the time here when it gets really hot and use the electric fan.

You actually reminded me of working for a place once where the whole summer it seemed we had no air conditioning. When we did have it it was so cold we had to wear sweaters, lol.

I always try not to turn my ac on until I absolutely have to. We have ceiling fans in all of our rooms which is 6 ceiling fans we have. We have 1 in each of our bedrooms, 1 ceiling fan in our family room & 1 in our formal living. Plus my son has a floor fan in his bedroom beside a ceiling fan. I have already had to turn my ac on. When you live in Texas you have to turn the ac on. Especially when it has been in the 90's some. I think I did not turn it on until the first of May which is a little later than normal for us.

Well I remember growing up we only had one little air conditioner in the living room that just worked to cool that room. So our bedrooms had no air conditioning. I remember it was torture sometimes when it was really humid out. I lived through it obviously but it was aweful. I will try to avoid turning on the air conditioning as long as possible. But there comes a point when I will turn it on. If my husband lost his job or something I might refrain from turning it on and just have everyone sleep in the basement, but as long as we have money coming it I will turn it on.

I honestly haven't seen any sort of difference in our bill when we've left the A/C off. I try to leave it off at night, though, if it's a little cooler, and if we can stand it. Personally, though, I'd rather keep it on and live frugally than leave it off all summer long. When it's too hot, and I can't get any sleep, and I'm uncomfortable and gross feeling all the time, and stressed, it doesn't make me feel any better to have the extra few dollars to rent a movie or two a month (because honestly, we're only really talking about the difference of a few dollars). Now, if I could save a hundred or two hundred dollars a month, lets say, by keeping the A/C off, then that'd be a whole other story...

We have a coler so I don't know if they use the same energy but we turn it off some nights because its to cold but during the day it has to be on. Sometimes it gets to 110 F or more during the sumer so we always have the coler on and the only times that we turn it off during the day is when nobody is goign to be home. And by doing that I have notice that is those save a little on my energy bill.

Hi clorissa, nowadays since the summer temparatures are rising so heavliy, it becomes ever more important to use an AC. I really dont understand how could you sweat all day and not ON the AC that you have. Infact i would not understand if someone is not going to use an AC or cannot afford to use, why to buy it and put it on the wall as photo frame....LOL I would go ahead and use it, even when we know that its going to increase your electricity bill, bcoz, its no longer a luxury but a necessity. Also since the temperatures would not remain to be the same, its not that we are using for the whole of the year...but only a few months of the year and i suppose that slight increase in electricty bills is well acceptable.

we live in a very humid and hot climate during the summer months - at about 100 degrees (give or take) and 90% humidity. We do not have/use air conditioning as our finances would not permit the extra energy costs. we manage with a few strategically placed fans. by utilizing the natural light in the warm months we further reduce our electric needs so that the increase of energy going for the fan usage is not as noticeable.

I don't have air conditioning anymore and I know that it drives my husband crazy as he has breathing problems and this weather is hard on him. However, we thought about having it put in but decided that we can't afford it right now. It is crazy to think that we make choices like that.

Turning off a/c at home can save money, maybe you can't notice it but it can help. The power that use when it turns on make us to pay but when turned off help us to save. For me turning off can save money.

I responded to a discussion similar to this yesterday...about ways to cut back to save money. I live in S. Fl and there is no way I would not have my a/c on. We have ceiling fans in every room and there is no way that would be enough to keep cool. The heat sometimes is not so bad but the humidity is unbearable during the summer here because it is also the wettest time of year. The electric company here says to set your thermostat at 78 degrees to save money and to be honest with you, that is usually not low enough. I expect $300 electric during the summer every year.

I think I can even though it is really hot these days. Because one of my friend has shared his experience of using AC when it was too hot. He told that his electricity bill was 7-10 times more than his normal bill when they were not using AC regularly. Now because it is really hot and our body burning we might think of turning on AC but there is also recession and many people are unemployed and so they might be thinking of saving there monthly expenses because AC can increase it drastically.

I do keep the temperature higher as to when my AC comes on, but I have health problems that make it necessary to use it when it's in the 90s. The savings comes with running it only when necessary. Karen

I'm sure that if we don't use the A/C we are going to save money. But there is no way I'm going to do that because its to hot for my family and me and the fans wont help at all with this heat. I rather pay a little more for my energy bill than having my family go thrue a hot day.

I feel that I am a very frugal person, but that is the one thing I just dont give up. Yes we use ceiling fans to help, but I totally refuse to be hot and sweaty all the time just to save a few dollars. Whats the point of having it if u dont ever use it?

Hi friend, In our country without AC only we stay.Only a few people have AC.Instead of that we have air coolers which is exactly like AC at your place. There is no necessity of having AC at our place. We have fans and aircoolers which are enough to sleep. Have a nice day

Air-con has never helped me in any situations at all. I would get some, then gets out and then I feel hot and flustered all over, with sweat stapled to my forehead, LOL. It just adds on to an increase in utility bills, I'd say. The weather is really 'sick' right now and needs attention. I think we should all play a part because the sun is telling us something, perhaps. It is blazing and something is wrong. No more burning of trees, cutting down on transport and wherever possible to walk or cycle. I know it's hard but I really think that if all can do the tiniest part, the sun will not be blazing so much. I love Mother Earth, it keeps me warm and gives me some coldness. God's great creation, that is.

i have to keep it off as much as possible because we just cannot afford it. i would keep it off even more but my husband insists on having it on at night when it is really hot even though he knows how hard it is for us to come up with the money to pay it. he is so stubborn.

yes ,but sometimes. A/C really cost so much. I will turn it off when its not so hot then start my electrinical fan. by the way...A/C isnt good for our healthy,if stay in some A/C room for long time. my Chest will feel so tight..hard to breath.. so most time ,my turning off A/C is for healthy cause. hv a good day

Yes, I would turn off the aircon if I will be saving money. That means even if it is super hot outside during summer. I already tried that during last summer and this summer. I was able to survive. What I did was just put the big electric fan in front of me and put it in the highest level. When I did this, it was not so bad after all. Turning on the aircon around 10 hours or more everyday is really expensive.

Of course the sun is burning and we all have is AC rooms me threee, then whats the fun to have an AC and not putting it on. Anyways it saves power but you suffer to heat and sun. So I think its better to put it on and sleep in airconditioned cool room without any disturbances! nice!
