I didn't know about it, but I was never a cook here in our house so I won't have the chance to try it. Maybe I'll try it if given the chance to work in the kitchen..
However, here are other suggestions. I've heard from a chef here in my country that another way to remove the fumes in the onion is to store it in a refrigerator for about two hours and that prevents you from crying will peeling the onions. Another is to light a candle or use a gas range while peeling onions as it burns the oxygen around it and removes the fumes from the air. But I guess the most practical way is to use a sharp knife and peel it quickly.
