What is the Appeal with the Housewives...?

This has been on my mind for quite some time. Apparently, my sister and her bunch of friends love to watch the TV series Desperate Housewives so much. I kind of see the appeal there in the show because whenever she comes over to my parents home, she'll be watching Desperate Housewives without fail when it airs. So when she happens to be there, I will get to watch it by chance too; if not, I won't bother...At first, I thought that it's just a silly show but when she starts talking about those actresses roles and their stories, I listened and man...she can go on and on. I'm a non fan, so far. I feel that if I like this show, it is kind of non-macho. But, it's interesting to hear her talk about this show and her friends are crazy about the wives too. So, I just hear stories from her and she will chat non-stop and which actress she loves and which housewife she would like to be. And my question is; are you addicted too? I welcome both gender to air their views here. And if you could be a housewife in there, who would you wanna be? If you ask me on who's sexy, I'd say all the housewives are sexy...so, what say you? Thanks in advance, ladies and men, feel free to voice out too. If I could embrace this discussion, so can you...

LOL! That is a nice ending note there zed. Indeed men can embrace this kind of discussion.^_^ Well, Im also not a fan of the show but Ive seen some of the earlier episodes. I just the appeal of the show is that these characters are seemingly normal housewives in a suburban set up. Its kinda like one wouldnt expect them to do anything so vulgar and bold. Yet, in the show, they do all things imaginable. Its also presented in a funny manner though there are those dramatic moments that would blend well in the shows emotional appeal. Its like, they seem to be perfectly normal, but one really has no idea what these women can and are willing to do.^_^

It's my version of exaggerating at its best..haaa... I find the housewives committing things that a real housewife would unlikely do. Have a nice day mylotting, buddy..

You summed it up pretty well, bjcyrix. Thanks so much for that. I suppose that's the main appeal of the show that got my sis hooked. The things the housewives did, as my sister told, I'd say waaalaah, ha!

I don't see any appeal in it either, in fact I think it is a nasty show. But I lloved the series The Riches, which many other people apparently found disgusting. About the only things I ever watch on TV are To Catch a Predator (the episode with the can of whipped cream and a cat was a hoot!), and 3 shows that have unfortunately been discontinued, the aforementioned Riches, and two cartoon shows, the claymation Creature Comforts, and the British superhero DangerMouse. I simply adore DangerMouse and his little honcho Penfold.

Thanks, drannhh. I am trying to grasp the idea of my sis being a die-hard fan of DH too. I suppose it doesn't appeal to all ladies, now that I've seen some mixed answers on this. As for The Riches, Creature Comforts and DangerMouse, I definitely have to check it out on the tube sometime for some snippets. It sounds like fun, especially when you mentioned little honcho Penfold, mmmm, nice nickname there.

Hi Zed, I am obviously not like other women as I can't see the appeal much either but then I am not a rich housewife but a working mum with very little time to watch tv, I tend to watch documentaries or drama more if and when I do. I have seen it a couple of times when the girls have been here and wanted to watch and also I am from UK and it is set in America so I cannot relate to it so much I guess. Now watch all the UK women say they watch it LOL. Huggles. Ellie :D

That's cool, ellie. Because I still need to understand why my sis loves the show so much. Perhaps in general, women that have time to watch this can understand the appeal..Thanks for your response, sweetie..

I personally enjoy the show. I don't think that it is really a show that a lot of men can get in to. I think we woman like it because it is somewhat realistic where we can relate but is unrealistic because most real woman would never behave like the women on that show do. They kind of play out the things that go through our heads when things happen to us, but real people don't do them. The Housewives usually do, and they usually get away with it. It makes it kind of fun to watch in a tongue and cheek kind of way, and then it has touching moments that touch us sometimes too. That is why I like it anyways.

I agree. There was this episode where my sis was so excited watching and I asked her why. And she said that Bree had knocked down someone or that the son knocked down someone and she tries to cover up for it. Those kind of deeds...and when you mentioned that, it is exactly the same. If I go deeper into why the show is such a success, it's perhaps because of the deep analysis of the housewives' lives and how it can be related to real life housewives out there. Now, I'm just thinking, why can't they make a series on Desperate Husbands...? That would be so cool, ha..

Well my cousins like it too and they have watched every episode of it... I have to admit I guess I haven't watched one full segment of it just the beginning then I wont bother to watch till the end. Sometimes I would tease all my girl cousins and my sisters as well if they gathered all together and talk about there husbands I would call them the desperate housewives then they would all laugh. Well about the show sorry cant say too much some episode are realistic but mostly I dont find it happening in real life. So I would say all in all I dont like it that much not because I am a men but because it's just not my type.

You are just like me. On some odd nights, she can even come to her friend's home or they gather somewhere and plan to watch on DVD, uggggh. That's the biggest reason for why I started this discussion. I want to know roughly any guys out there that have sisters and their friends so into it too. So I have a gang now... LOL, I call my sis and her friends the Desperate Housewives too whenever they come over to my parents' home on certain times. I'd rather watch EPL. I suppose the appeal of the wives to me would be their strutting around angrily and occasional cat-fights...haaaa...

Someone is afraid of being labelled non-macho,and hence is not admitting that he loves the show.:p Ok ok , not another word on that. :| ( Gosh , I miss the emotes! ) Well, I think I watched an episode or two. But I don't have the patience to watch such shows. I prefer sitcoms. Just sit for a while, have a few laughs and forget about it. I don't think I am addicted to any show really.Oh oh, I almost forgot- CSI. Now that is something I cannot miss! :)

How about all these emotes for you then: ... I quite like DH but I'm a no fan..:p (I can be allowed to put 3 emoticons at one time, ha...). I love the sitcoms Friends before but unfortunately the show's no more. I love Seinfeld too and Whose Line Is It Anyway. As for DH, I love the ladies. All of them are just so gorgeous. Yes, all the CSIs are my favorites; both CSI and the CSI Miami. Alright, ssssssh on DH and why I like it...*winks*

I love the show. I only started watching because I like Teri Hatcher but right after the first ep, I knew I'd be watching it each week. I'd be Susan because again, I'm a fan of Teri Hatcher but also she's clumsy and a children's book illustrator which are two things I can relate to.

I love Teri Hatcher too. She is like this super gorgeous lady in her prime and I think she certainly is a perfect role for Susan. Her daughter Julie is also super sweet. Great show DH; I totally agree; men are watching this too, no surprise. LOL...

Well im also a fan of the show and i like it coz its suspense, drama, comedy, even action, (when the girls start to catfight) and sexy all at the same time. Its not a 100% serious type of show unlike lost or CSI and it has many humorous moments that's why i love it. The plot is really interesting too right? At the beginning of each season there seems to be a mysterious neighbor that moves in Wisteria Lane.. And the plot thickens.. Hehehe.

Oh gosh, my hubby and I LOVE that show!! We watch it every Sunday night without fail!! I can't say I have a favorite for we like them all. Well all except for Edie Brit because she can be such a b!tch towards Susan Myers. Not only that, she's a tramp always after the other's ex's. The show changes on a constant basis and always seems to be someone dying and someone who lives on Wisteria lane are at fault. lol It's a funny show and we do enjoy it a lot

This is certainly refreshing. It's the second time, I think that I read into my discussion answers on this topic couples that watch DH. That's awesome to me, and I'm glad that your husband enjoys it as much as you. I used to have a no-clue on the roles of the wives, but after my sis told me, I started to dig watching bits of their roles. Especially when they are all so eye-candy and especially talented in their specific roles. Made me chuckle too at times on the occasional shows that my sis came by my parents home to watch. I know how Edie can be such a man-stealer, ha.. my sis gets so sad that she gets cut off from the show. She can even talk about it while we all eat dinner. My parents home seems to be DH talk nowadays. She can't wait for the next season. Thanks for your lovely reply...

I like the show but I don't particularly want to BE any one of them. There are certain qualities that each one has that I admire, but I wouldn't want to BE them. The show is a fun diversion though and the thing I like best about it is the humor.

It is indeed such a fun diversion. My sis is so into Gabrielle and Susan. She likes Bree too. And those imaginary thing they have in their heads; like acting on exactly as and when they please; awesome..

Hi zed_k4, Yeah, typical man, that is all you see, its a women's thing just like sports to you men, sometimes I wonder hwy men talk about kicking a ball around a field, I don't watch the programme myself as I think its just make women shallow but that is just my opnion and I don't get to watch too many Americans shows, I just prefer watching British soaps. I am not a fan of the show either but I do see it's trailers and it doesn't get my attention and interest though I'm a housewife maybe because I'm not desperate. I will try to watch it sometimes so I could share more about this discussion. I guess at this time I no right to judge the show.

the appeal that the show has to alot of women is that it portrays women of all facets of life. take lynette, she was a career woman who gave it up to raise her family. she sacrificed alot. bree, is the perfect housewife. women dont want to be rigid like her, but they want to do the best all the time. gabriel was a model, what woman would turn that down if she got the chance? but she grows alot during the series. susan is naive and kind of the cry baby type character. they all have traits that most women want, theyre just exaggerated for the series.

None. LOL I really can't see what the appeal is, although I know that so many people enjoy the series. But then again I am quite particular with tv series that I enjoy. Desperate housewives is just not a show that keeps me interested. So in answer to your question: No I am not addicted thank |God :) If I could be a housewife in there? Well , I wouldn't want to be LOL |Sure I like the sexy part, the physical attributes, but really I"m not into that series at all :)

it's a genre that portrays the newest major social trend - go for what you want regardless of who you step in on your way. I guess that's why I'm not much into it. I guess I'm old fashioned, I like to think about consequences to others before embarking in my pursuit to happiness LOL

Thanks for your honest on this, arkaf. I find that there are some fixed genre on this TV series Desperate Housewives. Perhaps that's why my sis loves it so much; the genre is so clear cut; all about what housewives could possibly do in their wildest imagination. I think it is a bit surreal; and hence many people do not like it, as much as those that like it too. Thanks for your response..

All my girl friends love to watch desperate housewife, they just can't wait to go to video store for new episode whenever one is out. I am still wondering where is the appeal of it other than the fact that few of the housewife are sexy and many girl "talks" on the show. So i guess it is normal for your sister 's love for that show.

Exactly, Pal! They watched it on t.v, then still renting tape to watch again for few times, seem like those desperate housewife had some sorts of attraction magic on few of my girl friends indeed, i had hard time finger that out myself. It is" Girl" type of thing, we "men" can not understand fully. Have a good one.
