About 6 weeks ago we lost our big Yellow cat to old age, now his house mate seems to be very unhappy. They lived together for about 10 years and never were friends, but the old guy that is left has become very dependent on us, he wants to be with us all the time and is losing weight. He eats well and his coat is shiny but he cries a lot. We have wormed him and checked him for painful spots. Nothing shows up. Do you think he is just missing the other cat?

Hi savypat, I expect that he is just missing the other cat. Even though they weren't friends, he was used to having the other around. Sometimes too as cats get older, they are inclined to become very dependent on humans for comfort. Blessings.

Yes I think your cat is missing the other cat! Even though the two cats didn't get along, they weren't lonely! They saw each other every day. Now the house mate doesn't see him and probaly missing him! I hope he gets better! I hate to hear of a cat dieing from a broken heart!

Cats don't like change. The cat is affected by the loss of the older cat, but he really doesn't want another cat, he just wants to be sure you aren't going to be "losing" him too. Just keep assuring him that he's still loved and that you aren't going to replace him or get rid of him.
