Things could not have started on a better note for the netherlands as they kickstart their t20 campaign with an incredible win in the end over hosts england on the opening day of icc t20 world cup 2009 england. England as usual have started badly in yet another world cup campaign. What more this time they are in danger of getting knocked out before the super 8 stage after failing to reach the semifinals in the inaugral championship. But whatever happens in the rest of the tournament for the holland team this was a very courageous performance from them and will not be forgotten for some time to come. Hats off to them they played fearlessly as well as sensibly. And one thing in cricket which always happens as we know- fortune favours the brave and the dutch men were brave indeed and deserved the victory completely.

Are you kidding me pratik87? Did we win over England with cricket? w00h00t! Cricket is only played by a few thousand people and I don't know anyone playing cricket. This is awesome! I've got no clue what so ever on how cricket works though. Did we win with big numbers or just close? Perhaps someone could briefly explain me how the scoring in cricket works? :D

yes if you are from netherlands your team won.they won on the last ball and i know people in your country have play cricket part time after hdoing a regular job. but your team has some good players like dirk nannes. your team won on the last ball and it cannot get any closer than that.see there are two teams the first teams goes out to bat with 10 wickets in hand and makes runs in the alloted 20 overs since it is a t20 tournament. the innings ends after the completion of 20 overs or if 10 wickets are picked up by the bowling team. then the other team comes out to bat and makes those runs.at the end of the 20 overs if they are unable to make the runs they lose or if they lose their 10 wickets before making those runs they lose. yesterday england made 152 runs. netherlands were 151 before the last ball and needed two runs to win which they got on the last ball. so congratulations to you and your team i watched the match till 1.30 in the morning as i was supporting netherlands to win. enjoy the win.

Thanks for the explanation it still isn't 100% clear to me but you're not to blame. Cricket just is not popular here so you don't get to 'deal' with it and thus don't learn the ins and outs. I am happy we won indeed, England are one of the best teams out there so winning over them is an honour. I am happy eurosport aired a replay a few hours ago, I couldn't enjoy watching though due to the lack of rule knowledge I have. By the way a newspaper in the England wrote: Dutch shoes 1 idiots 0, isn't that a bit harsh for england?

yes i heard that there are only around 6000 cricket players in your country and 7 grass pitches so it would not be that popular but even when they played in the 2003 world cup they were the best fielding side in the tournament. also another fact which proves that you have no idea about cricket is that you think England is one of the best teams around.otherwise you would have known that England are quite often the laughing stock in world cricket and they were the beating boys of the last t20 world cup in 2007 as well.the newspaper was just reacting to yet another embarrassment of the England cricket team. i do not think it was harsh but just funny. if you read all the newspapers of England regarding what they think of the England cricket team you will know what harsh actually is. since cricket is my favorite sport i would not mind at all to explain the rules again to you but i do not want to impose the concept of cricket upon you since it will be hard to understand all the rules at once since it might be a little complicated for a first timer. so i will spare you all the rules of cricket this time although i had just told you the basic concept which did not include a part of the actual rules of cricket.

I wish I'd have stayed up to watch the which I assumed would be very one-sided. I still admit I'm not shocked by the result as every major tournament has its own upsets but didn't think we'd see one so early into the tournament. I saw the highlights this morning and have to say, Netherlands did really well after having a shaky start with both ball and bat. This result can't be termed a fluke as the Dutch gave their all. And as they say, "Fortune favours the brave". Thats exactly what happened yesterday.

well the only reason i stayed up till late was because i was expecting a close game. when england is playing in the first match of the tournament you should know they will try everything to mess it up for themselves. history suggests the same thing and that is what they kept doing over after over in the second half of their batting and in the second half or their bowling.not to take anything away from the dutch guys they came back very well with the ball and played some amazing but proper cricket shots which made it worth staying up late. thanks for your response.happy mylotting.

Yes, indeed! It was a thriller no less...in true T20 style. I could not really believe this...the Dutch have really started their campaign and England needs to brush up its performance. LEt's see now how India performs!

yeah it was a thriller and it went the dutch way.it was a fantastic match to watch and england messed it up in the end for themselves. they would need a very big brush to turn around things for them in the tournament. regarding india well that is another story.thanks for your response.happy mylotting.

Surely Netherlands will not make it to semifinal but what good this win has done is that next ties in the group will be really fascinating. England will have to wind the remaining match and with a healthy runrate and do it in style. Beleive me it will be a really good tournament if there are few more upsets.

well kenya made it to the semi finals in the 2003 world cup and you can never say what may happen in t20 cricket.they have a good side and if they bump into australia then nannes will be very keen to beat them. so never say no i would say and that is what netherlands will think. i hope they play the same way in the tournament

i do not realy care who goes through between these two but i think england ar most likely to be knocked out of the tournament but you never know what might happen and i have a feeling they will might beat pakistan to keep their chances alive in the tournament which would be very unfortunate for the dutch if it happens.

ya, yesterday match is so intresting da. On yesterday toss plays major role in the game. Because before the match starts rain stopped the opening ceremony. So ground becomes so wet so is to hard to bounch in that wet surface. The outfield is also so wet so its stops running balls to the boundary. So england face too hard to score their runs. But in the second half, while the netherland batting ground becomes normal and also they perform stunning performances yesterday its really appreciable. They played well. Its so tough target for netherland on facing with the england but they acheive it in their style. So england should win their next game to qualify for the super 8's.

are you from england? what are you talking about? even if there had been any help due to rains netherlands could not capitalize on it and england raced to 100 in 11 overs and had the dutch team on the mat. the bowlers did a good job for them and pulled things back. so after 11 overs i do not think there would have been effect due to rains so it would be very wrong to take away credit from the dutch bowlers. the netherlands won because they deserved to win as they held their nerves till the end not because of rains.thanks for your response.happy mylotting.
