Household Bills

What is the best thing you have done to cut down your household bills. Personally we installed solar panels for our daily electricity. It did cost a fair bit but we estimate 1 1/2 years and we break even. We are connected to the national grid too for backup but unfortunately the power company here is not set up to take electicity back from us. What have you done?

Solar panels wouldnt do much for us. There are too many huge oak trees so most of the sunlight would be blocked! We keep our electrcity bill low, so it would take forever to recover the cost of the panels! But when we get a bigger house, that is something we will look into! One of the best things you can do to cut energy costs is to dry your clothes on a clothesline. That is definitely one of the biggest energy users in our house! We have been updating the appliances in our house over that last 4 years - when we bought it. That has made a huge difference for us! The other thing that really helped was new windows and doors. It is so nice to be in the house without terrible drafts! We cut our electric bill from about $80-$90 per month to about $30 per month by doing those things!

We dont need any special windows either. But it gets cold here, so old ones dont work as well as new ones! It sounds like you are doing excellent on saving energy! Keep up the good work!

Great savings derlila, we don't need special windows or doors etc, we live in South East Asia and it's hot most of the year round. I won't have air conditioning bacause I'm asthmatic and it gives me attacks. We did buy a washer dryer a few years back and have stopped using the dryer part unless it's rainy season and we desperatley need the clothes dry, apart from that we dry everything outside, the sun is the best dryer ever. I just had our fridge/freezer serviced too, they changed the door seal on the freezer and said this will cut down the electric usage of the appliance....

Wow!!! Only 20-30 dollars a month, where do you live. I live in the south and my electric bill is still about 130.00 per month. We try to cut back as much as possible, however our bill still stays high.

I wish my electric bill was that cheap. I would be happy with even paying $130.00 Our electric bill right now is around $350.00 but by the time it gets into the summer like in the late July & August it will be as much as $500.00.

Well the main thing we have tried to do for our Electic bill is not run anything unless it really needs to be ran. We also have been trying to cut back on things we do not really need, and eat out less, etc. Sometimes it is a hard thing to do but it is what is needed here for sure.

We have thought about solar pannels but decided that we would wait until our next home. We hope to be moving in the next few years and dont thing that it will be worth it to us to buy the pannels now. We do make sure the lights are out when we are not using them and save where we can. Our bill averages $53 a month so its a lot but not unbearable.

Our government paid us $8,000 rebate to have solar panels installed, so now I can generate solar electricity. It's cut my electricity bill down so low it's wonderful. Our government also pays us a small amount for the excess electricity we generate. I have a rainwater tank collecting the rain from the roof. I use the water for the gardens, for washing the floors or the car or bathing the dogs. My water bill is so low it's wonderful. I don't even own a clothes dryer. I use the clothes line if it's not raining. When it rains, I have a little rack that I hang clothes on in front of the heater. I grow my own vegetables and fruit in my yard. This saves a lot of money on groceries each week and makes sure we eat healthy food. I walk my daughter to kinder instead of driving the car. It takes us 20 minutes and keeps us fit and healthy and saves on fuel. I also work from home, so more fuel savings there. All of these things put together mean I get to stay home full time and write all day to make the mortgage payment. I love it!

So far, I learned to budget all my financial resources. And i cut them down more even like focusing on the basic necessities like water, electric, phone and house rentals. I tried to get rid off stuff like shopping in the mall, gimmicks and night life.

I do not think we can install solar panels to cut down electricity consumption. Your bills are really cheap I think we pay arourd 100$ and that is roughly 75US$. We try to reduce our usage but still it does not reduce much.

I didn't know they had to be set up for that, getting electricity back from someone. Learn something new everyday. I always thought if you were lucky enough to set up your own sorce that they atomatically did. Wow, they figure out ways around things all the time. So to answer the question. Not much that hadn't been done years ago.

We have been using less electricuty and water to save money an we have succeeded also. We use saved rain water for gardenning and to clean up the garage. We use big candles at night to save electricity. We do not use so much decorations lights now just in case there are relatives at home. We have been doing it for three months and we are happy with the bills. When We shower at night we light up the candles instead the bulbs.

If you unplug the appliances and anything electrical when you are not using it, you will be amazed at the difference it makes on your bill. Even when not turned on physically, the electicity is still be pulled if it's plugged in. I didn't realize that until I saw a special on TV. So now I even keep my washer and dryer unplugged when not in use. Think of how many electrical devices we keep plugged in daily and it will blow your mind.
