I would be so turned off. I would also lose my appetite fast. Sometimes, I tell these people not to make those sounds. Sometimes though, I just get out of the table and find somewhere else to sit. But sometimes, it depends on the culture. For example, in China, the proper way of drinking tea was to make some noise while drinking tea. I am not sure though. A Chinese girl from Shanghai just told me this trivia.

Oh yes. My mom is a loud eater, lucky for me I don't live with my parents any more. She used to drive me crazy but when I did point out the fact that she is eating loud she told me that she can't control it. She said she tried but just can't so I did a little research and it turns out that for some people it's like snoring, it's a medical condition. I guess it's not very common but since I found that out I try to keep an open mind and not judge everyone just because I don't like it or think it's not polite. Still I prefer people who at least have some table manners and don't slurp :D

It's not all that, some people just don't have manners but what I mostly meant is that if a person is chewing their food really loud it's not always their fault. I mean slurping and getting food all over the table is just bad manners.

oh......so that has to do with some breathing problems ,yes may be that's right ,even snoring is so annoying .but sometimes we just cannot tolerate the habit ,it's better to talk to the person about that and ask if they can try to stop doing so.......

Hi Karubod, I think different country have different definiting of the good manner of eating. As far as i know, in some Asian country, people eating with chomping and slurping consider as a good manner because that shows their appreciation of the good food. I know this won't apply to the people who is in western country. To me, i think it is better to keep quite while eating with customer, it's okay to have some noise while eating with family!

Hi may be you are right that it depends on the country ,in our country some people do eat like that mainly village people ,but it is not considered as good manners ,it is like no one cares about it ,men are supposed to be more hungry and eat fast because they do lot of work .yeah but i get annoyed even if any family member do so i will just say politely not to do so.....

Yeah, many people do that. It is annoying, but its involuntary and nothing can be done about it. And here in our country, this is so common. Every single person has the habit of making sounds while eating something or drinking tea.. So, we people are like used to it and don't feel bad about it.

Some foods can't help but make noise when being eaten such as apples or chips or other crunchy foods. Those I can tolerate and don't bother me very much. It's the ones that slurp their soup or coffee that get to me or chewing with their mouth open so you see all the food whollering around in their mouth. It's total turn off and bad manners to boot. I know of one person that sucks between his teeth as he is eating and it setting near him is very annoying. I tray not to be near him when eating. He is a winder guy but his eating manners are terrible.

Your so right. If I were hiring some one as an executive and went to lunch with someone that ate like that it would be a real turn off to hire them.

Wen I was growing up my brother could make a sound eating mashed potatoes, when I grew up I was told why-it was that my brother had a hard time breathing as a kid and making noise when he ate was because of it. I think that slurping while drinking is rude, and can be helped. But after realizing why my brother made noises while he ate, I don't let myself be bothered by someone doing this.

It bothers me if it's a constant habit. Occasional sounds are okay; I hardly ever notice them. My ex-husband used to make a chomping noise with every bite. He drove me crazy! He also drove my kids crazy. I commented on it quite a few times but he never even tried to do anything about it. Apparently, he was not raised with the manners I was raised with, what most of us are raised with. But, that was just one more thing in a long list of things that drove me to divorce him. My mother once said that I used to bite down on my fork, making a metallic, scraping sound and it drove her crazy. So, I consciously made an effort to NOT do that. It must have worked because I no longer bite my fork. I agree with you; eating is much more pleasant when there aren't a bunch of slurping, chomping or scraping noises going on around you!

If I seated near with that person who eats in a noisy manner. You will see me smiling. Not because I found it annoying but because I used to eat like that. Sooner or later somebody would apprehend him about his way of eating. But I'm not gonna do that.

I must say that I am a little uncomfortable when someone makes noise while eating. Things run in my mind, like what must he be doing with his tongue and mouth that would make a sound like that. It is a disgrace in manners if someone does that. One has to bear in mind that there are other people beside him that might , I am pretty sure will find it annoying.

With me its the gum chewing. When my year old opens her mouth while she chews it and makes this disgusting sound, I have to tell her to stop. For some reason, it affects me like fingernails on a chalkboard where I want to just scream. Some people make that same smacking noise when they are eating food and its just awful to me and also rude.

Definitely I get irritated. If the person is close to me I tell them that I am irritated. But many a times, I just move out of that place. But when it so happens that I cannot move out of that place, I simply think that I am deaf temporarily and I dont hear any sound.

When I was a kid, my parents always remind me of proper eating attitude. When in school, it is also learned proper behavior in eating and also good manners in everyday lives. The way an adult act reflects how he or she is brought up, proper breeding and eating without any noise is proper.

not really annoyed but puzzled why they have to eat like that. When i see my nephew eating with his mouth open, i always tell me him that the proper way to eat is to close your mouth while chewing the food and never ever make any noise. Never talk when your mouth is full. I always tell him that if people will see you eating like, they would think your not educated.

Some people do make a lot of noise eating don't they...lol. For some it drives them crazy, especially when it's quiet. Often you can hear some eating potato chips and it's really loud, I've labeled those as having a hollow head. Some slurp from a mug or while eating soup and those are really annoying because there's no excuse for it. I do understand that some people have a breathing problem with their nose and make sounds but little can be done about it. Some people just don't care and eat like we call pigs, especially bad when food particles fly from their mouths as they try and talk at the same time.

Apparently in some cultures its like tradition, it shows appreciation for the food they are eating. To me it is repulsive, I would rather starve than eat a meal surrounded by these slurping pigs. In this day and age, table etiquette should be something everyone is taught, when i see people slurping spilt tea from their saucer, i feel like ramming it down their throats.
