would some comedy shows be as funny without the main characters in them?

I love watching comedy shows that are hilarious, not just mediocre. I have to be able to laugh aloud in order to continue watching them. Otherwise I just get bored with them...Did you every notice that it's not always the star of the show that is the funniest? Take Frazier for instance...I loved that show, but not for Kelsea Graham(Frazier), but because of his brother. He was hilarious! Two and Half Men..Wile Martin Shean may be good, the brother is the one that gets me laughing. Even Friends..I think Joey, pulled it off better than the others I watched The Big Bang Theory tonite...I couldn't stop laughing..Sheldon is on the top of my list for comedians. I don't know if he is considered the star of the show, but without him, I think the show would be a flop. All the actors are great, but Sheldon carries the show. What do you think?

Hi Sweetchariot, 'Frazier' is my all time favourite show, it is so well written and funny, but I couldn't imagine it without Niles whom I adore. If it had just been about Frazier I wouldn't have watched it but saying that he grew on me over the years. On the other hand some shows were made by their main character, 'Fawlty Towers' would never have worked without Basil even though the rest of the cast was brlliant, the same with 'Some Mother's do Ave 'Em' without Frank Spencer.

I don't remember 'Fawlty Towers' and 'Some Mother's do Ave 'Em". It's possible they were on East Standard Time, or on channels we had access to here, but I would've like to see them. I like a comedy show that really makes me laugh, otherwise I am total bored with them. It's sad when they come off the air, and discontinue a show that you think is hilarious.. Thanks for your response.

Sorry sweetchariot, I should have said, the two shows I mentioned were the top comedy shows in England in I think the 1970's. They are so timeless that I have introduced my son to them via you tube. I was sure they would have been a hit in the USA.

Eh. The show wouldn't be the show without the cast. They make the show around the cast they get and the storyline they make. If they took out a character abruptly it just makes the show awkward.

No...I wasn't talking about taking out a cast member...I believe all the characters make up the show that it is..however, I would've expected the main star of the show to be the funniest, and more often than not, they aren't the funniest...it's one of the co-stars that is funnier than the main character.

Oh yeah..... I can't imagine what Seinfeld would have been like without Kramer.
