I think you should add more friends, therefore they can easily look your status updates, what topic you opened or replying. I am also new and only have few friends, and so far my topic also get a few replies, only one of them got more than 10 replies. I guess you cannot force anyone to replying for messages, if they interested in the topic, they'll reply, if not, you won't get any replies. Maybe we could now add each other so I will reply in your topic later on:)

My worst discussion have 2 responses so far, but my best only reach 16 responses. I think it's just a random cause, no one here have some trick to drive people responding to your discussion. When I was a newbie I have the same "sadness" like you. I started a discussion but no one response, after that I finally realized about this random phenomena. It's just basic human psychology, people easily get bored so they change time to time, this is applied to a discussion to, if people get bored to some topic they change to another segment topic. You must make your discussions wider. I mean don't just create one, but many, purpose one discussion for a light conversation segment topic like "what is your name?" or something like that, and other purpose it to the heavier segment discussion like "how many time you quit your job?". Be creative and just spread out the net widely so you'll get a lot of fish.
