I am making this week my garden week. I figure since I am unemployed I should make my yard look good. I went to Lowes and price the stepping stones. I figured if I go that route, it would be 2011 before I get my projects completed. I just find the instructions to make stepping stones, and I think I am going to make several. Have you ever made stepping stones?

I've made stepping stones myself. Sometimes I just use flagstone from the creek, but if I want cement ones I make my own. I probably do it a little different than most though lol. I can't afford the ones from Lowe's either. What I did the one year was to save my old pizza boxes. They're square and the large ones are about 12 X 12 inches. Sometimes I save the smaller ones too so I can come up with a pattern mixing the sizes of the squares. I pour the concrete in them and keep them moist until they set. Then when they're dried nice, I remove the box. (If the box sticks, you just wet them and the paper will pull back off.) One nice thing with these is that they all turn out in uniform sizes, and I can have the grandkids make hand prints in them. You can add other stuff too, like shells, pretty pebbles, and stuff like that if wanted. With shells, you put them in the box first, with the hump side down, and when you fill in the concrete it fills in all the open gaps and the shells stay intact. Even if the shells break or come out later, it still leaves the shell impression behind. I like doing it this way: I only have to pay for the bag of ready mix concrete and my imagination is free lol.

my hubbys family made one out of cement and had all the grandchildren (at the time) put their hand prints into it, then we gave it to my inlaws for a present for their garden. did you buy a mix or anything or are you using a preexisting rock? i would be interested in knowing how to make one.

I havent made any myself although i was looking into doing it. I've been collecting flat rocks to go in places for the time being however my mom keeps stealing them on me for her rock patio! I found an article on ehow that went step by step on how to make the cement and put the decorations in...when to add writing or handprints.
