I was reading yesterday about the man that tried to kill President Reagan is getting more freedom to visit his mother and to also get a driver's license. I think this is the dumbest thing that I have heard, and I have heard a lot of dumb things. I do not support that political party but, this man tried to kill the President and he wounded others during the attempt. What are your thoughts about this? If this man is so much better that they are going to allow him to drive a car shouldn't he be in prison or something? I could only find the article on cnn that wasn't where I read it originally though, I didn't have any luck finding it on FOX so sorry conservatives. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/06/17/john.hinckley/index.html

I think this is a load of crap. Call me barbaric, but when someone shoots at the president, I believe a public hanging is the best way to deal with it. That same sentiment does not apply to shoe throwing just so you know.

I'm going green on this one. Not only are ropes reusable, but they are much better for the environment than bullets, gunpowder, etc. :)

I don't see how this is at all political.. he tried to kill a man. It doesn't matter who the man was, or who he wounded, we're all people and all have the same rights. Yes, the man belongs in jail or a mental hospital or something. If he served his time and they think he's better then let him out and give him some sort of life back, why is it so complicated? Why does it matter that it was a president he shot at?

I'm 29, so I too was very young, and I don't remember it at all. I don't understand how he's well enough to have some freedoms but not all, it makes no sense at all to me. Either lock him up or let him go, like I said.

Well they don't believe that he is "better" enough to actually live in society. He just isn't crazy enough to be under lock and key 24/7. I was little when Reagan was shot but, I remember it pretty well. Hinkley not only shot the president he also paralyzed James Brady and wounded 2 other men. I personally feel that it should be more of a crime than which it is when someone kills or trys to kill any president.

This surprises me and horrifies me! The man tried to kill the president! I don't care if the president was repub or dems, they should be locked away and not allowed these freedoms.

I myself was very shocked as well. I think it is just absurd!

I thought it was a federal crime, I guess it doesn't matter anymore. Well, if he gets more freedom he should thank the Americans who fought for his undeserved freedom. I'm sure CNN (Commie News Network) loved telling Americans about this wacko getting another chance. Conservative or not, try that today and see what happens, you'd be at Gitmo and then off to Paris for sightseeing.

I'm really surprised that this issue isn't getting as much news as I thought it would. I am not a Republican but, I personally find it very sad that this person is able to get off so easily.

The problem with the insanity defense is that you can't be held accountable for the crime you were convicted of once your mental condition improves so a murderer can eventually be set free once he's **cured**. I doubt this will ever happen in this case because of the seriousness of the crime and who was targeted. He'll never see the inside of a jail cell though because he was already sentenced to a psychiatric facility.

That's just so nuts that now he will be able to drive, guess it's sorta like federal prison LOL I just really do not understand the whole insanity defense thing. I feel awful for the families that had wounded loved ones during the shooting.

There are people who get thrown in jail for possession of weed, and this goober tries to off a former President and gets to walk around freely afterward? This is just an elaborate prank, right? This must be a collaboration between comedian Jamie Kennedy and Ashton Kuchor. I refuse to believe the hypocrisy.

Very good point, some states have a three strike rule and I remeber reading that a man in California was given life for a stealing a DVD from a store. This guy shoots a bunch of people because he is in love with a Hollywood star and he thinks he will win her love by killing the president but, now, 20 something years later we as a society thinks he should be able to drive and go visit his mother more, you're right it's a complete joke.

So what the man has been locked up for 20yrs in a mental hospital/prison for what he did. Now I"m reading that others say he should be there for life.... I say give the man a break! Yes what he did was wrong. But how is it any different than a rapist who gets less than 5yrs behind bars & the victem gets a lifetime of mental anguish? So many horriable crimes get lighter sentances than what Hinkley has paid already and they took lives! He only "attempted" but because he went after a political figure the rules change.
