i just don't get it, this whole beard thing. seems like the in thing just lately is to have a wild man of borneo, trucker, mountain man beard that looks unkempt. actually the whole homeless person ijust slept under a bridge unkempt look seems to be in. i just don't get it, okay when i say beard i don't mean a little soul patch, or abe lincoln style beard, nay i mean a cross between and amish person an zz top but not as well maintained, joaquin pheonix has it, keanu reeves. it is one thing to have the amish style beard which is well manicured and kempt and looks a little like abe, it is quite another to look like you have spent a lot of time in the great white north and need the beard for warmth or to make some kind of wig. i would like to know about this (fashion) statement that is being made, is it some kind of anti-establishment silent protest. please seriously tell me i am fascinated. on a side not, joaquin's beard has been accompanied by some eccentric behavior, general rudeness to fans, leaving of his acting career to pursue a hip hop career, could there be a link between this things? who knows?

I don't get much of the fashion thing now days. Especially the young people. I saw a guy coming out of a business just earlier today that caught my eye. I am a people watcher anyway but this guy looked like he had something under his chin. I looked closer and saw that it was a close cropped beard. I have seen these before and am just not sure if I like them or not. They look cool, but weird too. Let Joaquin act that way if he wishes. He may not be around for long. Alot of the hip-hoppers seem to be that way. I think it is the cool attitude they think they are projecting. Not sure.

yeah that beard makes him look very dirty and scummy i am not a fan. yeah there are a whole lot of weird beards out there like the one that is close cropped and curves from one temple to the other and is about 1 centimeter wide and is close to the chin, i think that is the sort of thing you are talking about. my ex used to grow his facial hair sometimes and he was bummed out when he was stopped at the airport by security to check his bag, i told him that it was possibly because he had grown a terrorist style beard, well a domestic terrorist anyways. i think that they do it to be incognito. i mean there are some who grow their beards because it is a religious thing, that is different though.

Hi mama_bear, I am a woman, and I have noticed this new look around town too, the Rumpelstiltskin look. I think men are saving loads of time (by rolling out of bed and running out the door), and money (no razors, no fuss). Maybe we women should stop shaving our legs and armpits in rebellion. I saw Joaquin's look recently, and with the eccentric behavior you speak of, maybe ticks have set up camp in his beard and given him Lyme disease, and that can account for the odd behavior. I'd love to hear a man's viewpoint too. I'm having a hard time deciding who to give my spare change to at the subway station. I'll have to keep skulking around this discussion to find out.

oh girl i hear you, wouldn't it be embarassing giving the wrong person money, it would be like asking a person when their baby is due when they are not pregnant. about the lyme disease you may be right. yeah i did also notice that this beard look is accompanied by wrinkled clothing and just like a homeless person look. i heard a theory about that, on these magazines that talk about the stars fashions, well they said that their fashion is reflecting the state of the economy, don't know how far true that is. guess they want the common man who cannot afford to be dressy to feel comfortable in their old threads, because then it looks like they are just being trendy and not just poor. nice one guys ;)
