I really want taking pictures. I almost have three thousand pics taken since I last year. I want to share a good tip when taking pictures. Some may already know this. It is the rule of thirds. This makes a good photograph by putting the target/focus on a good place in the picture. Wikipedia says: "The rule of thirds is a compositional rule of thumb in visual arts such as painting, photography and design. The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections." I've been taking pictures and this rule make good photographs.

That sounds good. Our digital camera has a little square in the view finder where you place the main focus of the picture and I have found by using that, I get some really good shots. I am better at candid shots and scenery then at formal photos. And I try to get the subject more in the center.

I am glad to hear that. I also love to take candid shot. When I show my friends the pictures in my archive, they discover I have taken pictures of them when they do not realize it. Oftentimes, they ask me to give them some copies.

I always hated people taking me photo. I did not look that good in a formal shot -- they always showed my worse side =big fat neck, and I could never smile perfectly. I looked like a horrible cheshire cat. And I always felt it best to get something done naturally. Now if only I had enough money to get a really good camera that takes more then 5 mg. or whatever you call it and if I could figure the zoom out.

In art photography you have to think out of the box to create images that are into art category. You can forget about any rules, art has no rules... Some rules may apply to everyday pictures...

My brother-in-law, who is also a photography hobbyist gave me a very nice idea in capturing photos. He told me the 4 by 4. You measure out the width and height 4 by 4. Consider taking the object focused in the intersection of both first square within the viewfinder. Hope you got it.

Yes indeed. It will give the photo a "breathing space" for your subject and also tells much about the viewer the environment the subject is in. It will also make the viewer feel comfortable, peaceful and relaxed.

The only tip I want to share as a person who finds fiddling with knobs, buttons and rings in the camera too difficult, is to use Auto-mode and shoot!
