It's OK To Talk To Strangers Now?

I woke up this morning and when I turned on the television there was a show that comes on once a week on that tells about new, unusual, etc. Websites. Today they were speaking about a site that is for chatting. This "Chat Room", so to speak, is different in that you do not have to sign up to use it, there are No profiles, there are no names, no information about where you are from, no photos, no webcams, or anything that will personally identify you to anyone, Unless of course during the chat you are having You Choose to divulge such information. When you go to the site you just click on the button to begin a chat and you are taken to a chat page where you just start talking to a complete stranger! In fact the only "name" identifiers while you are talking, so that you know who said what, are the words: Me and Stranger I was curious, so when I got up I went to the site and had a little chat myself! In fact I actually I had two chats, but the first one that I started chatting with was a real Loony Tunes that I soon disconnected with as was my choice. I then began another chat, thinking: "lets just see if they are all this way", and I must say the second one was a very intelligent, 16 year old male, or so he said, but I believe him as he chatted like a 16 year old male but who knows? Any way, we had a very nice, clean conversation. We talked about what time it was, the weather, how he liked school, what he wanted to be when he grew up, what types of things he likes to do and what types of food he enjoyed etc.. Having said that! I also noticed how easy it would have been for me to get any information out of him that I wanted to had I been so inclined...AND I WAS NOT as I am definitely Not a predator! The message given on this site is that it is OK to talk to strangers...And of course if the site is used properly by everyone I have to agree it can be very interesting...But! there are always those "bad people"/predators out there that are just waiting to take advantage of the naive! Of course talking to strangers goes against all that most of us have been taught while we were growing up, but none the less I found that there were thousands upon thousand chatting at the same time that I was. Now to my point about all of this! While I will not be using the site anymore as I already have enough people that I Know to chat with, what do you think? Do you think it is any safer to chat on a site such as this one that I have been rambling on about because there are no photos, profiles etc. or do you think it is just as dangerous as any of the other chat rooms because when you have naive persons and you wish to take advantage of them you could Still ask them personal questions and they could still answer and get into a precarious situation? For what I consider Obvious reasons, (not wanting to possibly get someone into a precarious situation), I have left off the name of the site. But please do share with me your thoughts about what I have been going on about.

Occasionally people do meet randomly and anonymously on trains etc and have a little chat. Then they go their separate ways never to meet again. This site strikes me as being a little like that. Personally I think that it is fraught with problems. Had you been predatory you might well have lead that 16 year old to divulge an e mail address or more to you; and there are plenty out there that would do that. The purpose might well be for "strangers in the night" to meet and pass on by; but I think that it serves no discernibly useful purpose. As you didn't ask but I know meant to: Perkyp1keneverbeenkissed@Yahmail.com!!!

GOTTCHA!!! I Knew if I worked hard enough at it and gave you a false sense of security that this was indeed a serious discussion P1key that you would slip up in your naivete and give me your very secret e-mail address!! You are just sooooo easy! Are you This Easy when it comes to everything else P1key?? IF SO! then I am going to change that Perkyp1keneverbeenkissed to Perkyp1kehasbeenalotmorethankissedNow@Yahmail.com!!!

I am not comfortable talking to strangers Online either And I don't know what to say to strangers! I think sites like myLot offer a great outlet for people to talk to each other in probably about the safest way there is Online. Of course I know that things can and probably have happened here on myLot that were not quite pure but I think it is probably a very rare occurrence. I am happy some of these sites are out there! Thank you for responding!

I can see two possible explanations on this: (1) is that your talking to a really young person pretending to be an adult and ended up giving away too much information for a stranger to extract from him in such circumstances or (2) he was actually an adult pretending to be younger than he actually was and was feeding you false information that you thought was true :) Which made you feel like he's being stupid but he was actually just playing you. I believe that people should be careful who they speak to online and that talking to strangers does not seem like a wise act. For one thing - isn't there anything better for us to do than talk to random people? We can just ring up a friend for a good meaningful chat, right? Thanks for the response on my discussion :)

Hi Oyenkai! I agree that it is Not very smart to talk to strangers/random people and I of course agree with you that you can just as easily speak to your friends whether it be in person, on the phone or chat Online to them. Trust me when I tell you that I do NOT do this as a general rule, talk to strangers on strange chat sites, but it was merely an experiment to see what the site was all about so I could share the information here on myLot and also on one of my blogs to Warn people about this site and let them know that it existed!! Thank you very much for responding!

oh,this is the site for the people to communicate each other, whether it is the familiar or stranger,it is the most importatant for us is to communicate each other, not to give some information the important thing and keep the information in the very small circle. the mylot com is the place to talk each other, there are no some value words to speak out, you do not concern about the some personal thing to out the community of yours, this is the people that is contribution for all in world.some things are spoken from your heart, and make you very pleasure and very light to do some thing, this feeling is very great than before. we have such the same feeling about this. you donot always keep the information of yours to your inside heart, the people are in the society and every people are in the point of the social net.we are limited for this net, but the other side of this, we have a great dependence for this social net.some words from your heart is not convenient for your circle of around you, but in mylot com for you to speak out thoroughly, and how good it is for you to release yourself!!!!

Well, we talk to strangers all the time. Just because someone creates a profile and registers does not mean the information given is true or accurate. I think I like the fact that there are no identifiers because then you don't have to talk to the same person twice and you won't have to put up with any internet stalkers!

Now I have to agree with you there Canellita! If you are intelligent and are Not going to be giving your personal information out to any of these strangers then I think it is a good way to avoid those Internet stalkers indeed! Who knows? Maybe that was exactly what the developers of the site had in mind when they started the site...to protect it's users from stalkers which are as real of a problem on the Internet as predators! Trust me, I know! I had it happen to me and let me tell you it was Not Fun! I couldn't go anywhere on the Internet that I didn't see this guy! Thanks for responding!

Oh yes, it could have been much worse...I think being stalked must be one of the scariest things that can happen to you...you Never know if you are being watched or not and in my mind I would be a wreck as I would just assume that I was Always being stalked and the stalker was just right around the corner from me!!

What an absolutely ridiculous platform to set up! There's enough of a challenge keeping weirdo's away from kids and vulnerable people as it is without adding even MORE anonymity to the whole process. I hope to God that this site has a tremendous amount of pressure placed on them to shut down, or change their approach entirely. It's an extremely unsettling thought when you consider how predators may use a medium like this one.

Hi James, great to see you too over on my side, I Know I owe you a few and I'll pay up I promise!! I could not agree with you more! With the World of Internet Networking and Chatting and all of the upset these days about how many predators there are out there and how to stop them this set up has the appearance that it was set up by predators!! But as I said it was on a television show this morning that went to many different countries and I am sure that a lot of other people that did not see the show are aware of the site also or will be, so I would think that there would definitely be some repercussions about this dilly! The site is supposedly fairly new but I honestly do not see how it can stay around very long with this type of format! And I KNOW there are Loony Tunes on it, as I said, my very First short chat was with one so I would say that is Not very good odds!! Thank you so much for your response James.

It is alright to talk to stranger for adult but not teenager or any minor. Then again, it is up to their parent and individual to decide what is ok or not , since there are various reasons people want to talk to strangers online and some are more willing to take risks than others even though knowing the fact it is not wise to do so as hard headed people are not so uncommon in the world.

Hi Lampar! It's good to see you here! I have been thinking about you and that I needed to get over and see you...of course you see how that went! I agree that there are a lot of hard headed people in this World and it never ceases to amaze me Just how many!! A lot of times the adults are as bad if not worse than the kids in giving out all of their information and life stories...and we wonder where the kids learn it from! It is kind of a "do as I say and not as I do" situation many times! Thanks a lot for responding and again great to see you!

Odd. I wonder what the draw is to such a site where you don't give any information whatsoever, even to the administrators. I'd be leery of someone that didn't want to leave any personal information whatsoever and it sounds like a breeding ground for trouble. Nope, I don't see anything good about a site like that at all.

I tend to agree with you Ldyjarhead about needing no information at all. Although I suppose they may think that a lot of the information that is given on those sites is false anyway, even the e-mail addy's sometimes, so why bother? Thanks a lot for your opinion and response!
