Do you worry when other people use your computer/ laptop?

June 30, 2009 11:34am CST
Whenever anyone uses my computer, even if they are family, I worry that they will allow viruses onto it and let it break. I especially worry if they go on it while I am away. I worry most when my dad goes on my computer as he isn't very knowledgeable about them and so is always asking what to do when something happens. He also isn't very good with knowing if emails are safe or not. Luckily I created his Paypal account on my email address as he has been receiving fake emails that are supposed to be from Paypal and believing they're real. I do sometimes worry too that people will see what I write about them on sites like this. How about you? Do you worry and if so, is it for the same reasons?

Yes, I also worry sometimes. I don't like it when others, even my friends, relatives, and family, use my laptop. There are stuff there that I don't want them to see, like confidential documents. In the past, I lent my laptop to a relative who was in need of one. He borrowed it for around two weeks. When he returned it to me, there was a tiny scratch in the front of the laptop. To add, there was a virus after he returned the laptop to me which he got from his friend's USB. I was so pissed that a virus entered my laptop that I snubbed him for a few days afterward. Then I never lent him my laptop ever again, even if it is just for a few days.

Ahh no! Of course this brings something else up, worrying about external damage. I absolutely hate it when people touch my computer monitor and leave fingerprints all over it, for example! Thanks for the response.

I constantly worry when I leave the house before when my husband would just be home. Even if there is a computer downstairs he would rather use my laptop since he can just stay on the bed with it. Of course I worry about it all the time because whatever happens I will be the one to pay for any damages thus I would rather not have anybody use it without me around. That is my only rule of thumb but of course I cannot say no to my husband so I really worry all the time.

I am not worried about it. As usually it is either my friends or my family members. I have no big secrets in my computer. It's alright for them to use it. Just don't let my computer crash. I love China

I'm worry too. As I have some private stuff in my computer like some pics or sth I wrote that I don't want other ppl to see. but I'm not quite worry about the safety of my computer as I have intalled anti-viruses software.

I have anti-virus software too but sometimes it can fail to detect something as a virus is strong enough to get through. Also, sometimes you have to confirm actions (removing viruses) and my Dad being as terrible as he is on computers, would probably let the virus run freely by selecting the wrong action.

I do worry a lot because my computer is how I make a lot of my income. The biggest worries I have are virus' and malware/spyware. A few times in the past, I have had to resort to having my computer washed and reprogrammed in order to get rid of all the malware on my hard drive. That can get expensive if you have to do it every few month. I now have a laptop in addition to my desktop and I generally let others borrow the laptop. If anything goes wrong, I still have my desktop as a backup.

No, I don't.. I have got nothing to hide so there's no reason for me not to let my family use my personal computer or laptop.. But I think I will get more strict when other people like my friends or not so close friends use them..

definitely but sometimes it depends if whose using the laptop! if it's my brother then i will worry coz he likes to install games and others but other than that, i think i don't worry too much!

Actually, I think I'm OK with my brother on here too as my brother has his own PC and so I believe he knows enough about protecting it and knows a lot about what not to do such as what emails you shouldn't open attachments from.

yea sometimes i get worries and sometimes i get skeptical about the intentions of the person who is using or trying to use my computer, he may just be trying to retreive some information which may be vital for my finances or he may just try to get some computer viruses in it and that could be dangerous

I worry too. This is because of the carelessness in the overall usage of my computer. Some friends or family members just insert removable media without running antivirus scans and sometimes the go to potentially dangerous sites just because they have found something funny. In the process they bring in viruses. I had several system crashes luckily, I managed to rectify the problems on my own. Maybe you should create a user account for them with very limited user rights to effect control though the issue of viruses will not go away. Your Account should be password-protected.

I have tried creating a separate limited account for them in the past there there was too many problems about what they couldn't do and the internet decided to only work for me so I gave up with that. Yeah, the funny thing happens with my dad. The worst thing is that he saves funny videos and presentations from emails without fully knowing what they are then doesn't remove them. It is annoying and then I spend all of my time worrying that he has downloaded viruses! My computer always seems to start running slowly after he has been on it too. I have to add that my computer has actually broken several times which is probably why I worry so much. I lost a lot of files including old photographs as I didn't have the time to back them up.

I don't know if I necessarily worry, but I get very uneasy. I suppose that's the same as worrying, though huh? But I'm also weird about people touching my stuff. I guess I am a little worried about what they might do on my computer and what websites they might visit. I suppose that's why I'll usually have them use my laptop instead of my desktop. My laptop has Linux on it, so I don't really need to worry about suspicious sites and whatnot.

i dont want anybody using my laptop without my permission and without me personally when they use it. if they have something really important to look into internet, i would allow them but not for very long. i worry too that they may open a site that has a virus and then ill get problems afterwards, that would be really annoying. as for reading my emails, they wont be able to since they dont know the passwords, as for those what i write about other people, well i havent said anything bad about them so i think i have nothing to worry about that.

I don't really worry about it since there are just 3 other people using it once in a while..which isn't often anyway. But I don't worry because I know which sites they are visiting and usually I am in the same room so I can kind of control there actions. Sounds quite disgusting..but they are not on the pc like me so it's not really a big deal I think

i do worry sometimes, but that is to ensure that they may not inject virus, or spoil something due to negligence. but, otherwise,i am not really worried in terms of privacy or anything.

Yes, I do worry. Even if they're my family or not. Because I ever experienced once when I didn't use the computer and suddenly my sister jumped in and accidentally kicked the power supply off and then the computer was broken and I got blamed because I'm usually the one who use the computer. And maybe this is because I'm selfish like hell that I get this insecure feeling every time everyone, include my family members using the computer. In short, I feel like they shouldn't touch the computer from the first place haha.
