Public or Private?

Was your high school a public or private school? Mine was public. I think there are pros and cons to both but I am very glad I went to the high school I did. It was a huge inner-city school, with a 25% drop out rate, no money, and crime. It was also very diverse- we even had a lot of immigrants from all over the world. But there were also plenty of opportunities to take IB or AP classes, or even university ones. It was what you made of it and you were responsible for yourself, no one was holding your hand. Now that I am in college with a lot of rich kids, I appreciate my high school because of the experience it gave me. I feel like I was exposed to more kinds of people and going to school with kids from all backgrounds was more realistic. I wasn't sheltered. But many people prefer private schools and feel that they offer better educations. I have never been to one, so what can I say. What about you? Do you think it is better to attend a private or public school?

I am from indonesia. In my country, public school is much much much cheaper than the private one. The public one are owned by government. I am in a private school call Sutomo1 in medan and this school is really amazing. great teachers, great facility, great friends and also great canteen. It is probably the best public school in medan. In my country, private school are really really much better from the government's school. the tuition fee in public school are usually ranged from Rp.1000,- to Rp. 20000 but the private one can cause you from Rp. 250.000 to Rp. 2.000.000.... can you see the difference?

In my country there are no private high schools. We have private elementary schools, but all high schools are public. I went to two differnet elementary schools one was public and the other one was private. In the private school there were better teachers and more homework. A "normal" high school takes 3 years, but I want to a special school that only took two years. It was hard and we spent most of our spare time on studying, because we had to finish in two years, but aside from that it was a good school.

All three of my schools were public but generally in smaller towns so nothing real extreme in any of them.

Public. I actually liked having a pretty decent sized class without all the dressing up and stuff.

hi anna! i am from the Philippines and i attended my high school in a private institution...but when i am on my elementary i am enrolled in a public school and in a state university when i am on college... well as you said both have pros and cons...in private school, number of students are limited in every class unlike in some public schools that number of students per class is more than the average...but its just nice that we don't spend much money on public schools... for me, any type of school will do for me, was it a public school or a private one...its okay, i think its all depend on the students and how they value education that they are getting...how she learn is depends on her... maybe some private schools especially the expensive ones really offers better education...but there's also a lot of government school that offers good and better education and was able to produce good students... have a good day!

I went to a public school from elementary to college. During my grade school I went to a community school and then in high school I went to another public school. In college I went to a state university. I can say that during my time public schools were a lot better than now so now that I have kids, they all go the a private school, I feel that they'll get better education there.

I went to a public high school, but I think a private school is better for child. Reason being that you get a better education and you have more of a choice of what kind of elements you child is exposed, too. I know some parents are concerned about what outside influences are being exposed to their children.

In the country I stay, we do have both public and private school. However, attending a private school is a very high expense choice, therefore most of us go to public school. I agree that we are all on our own, and ask questions when we do not understand, and will not be spoon fed with information. It does help alot in living the working society later

Hey anna :-) Most of my life as a student was spent in private school. :-) I attended private high school and college. When it comes to which is "better" -- public or private -- I really think it depends on the person, and the family. You know? I mean -- for some students, public school is a better fit. Public schools typically offer larger student bodies, more competitive athletics, and in some cases -- a wider variety of class studies. That's why public schools can be great for a wildly social student looking to excel both academically and athletically. On the other hand, private school has a lot to offer for the student or family looking for a more personal experience. Since private schools are typically smaller in size, teachers can usually offer students more of their time and attention. Private schools often have such a stringent focus on academics -- that they really are a great fit for the "book worm," or "smarty pants." :-) Private schools can offer some great athletics, too though. It really just depends on the place. As far as "rich kids" are concerned -- I really think you're going to find those everywhere ... at both public AND private schools. I mean, there are a lot of kids in public schools -- some of whom are bound to come from money ... and heck -- we all know private school can be expensive! So, you're going to find "rich kids" there too. So like I said -- which is better, public or private? I really think it all depends. I think each family and student should make their personal decision, find a good fit, and stick with it. I loved my educational experience, and wouldn't change it for the world! Wherever you are -- I hope you're having the time of your life! -AshleyGirl
