What is the Breed of the Smartest Dog you Ever Owned?

I raise and train coonhounds. I'm very passionate about them but I have to confess... this little border collie puppy I have right now is exceeding my expectations. At 11 wks old she already knows: Come - No (haha) - Stay - Go Potty - Go to Bed - Sit - Down (to lay down) - roll over - fetch. She's working on a mixture of verbal and sign language for her commands. She is also already working a small flock of 10 young ducks. She will 'hold' and 'down' on command when working with them. She goes to her first herding clinic later this month. So, what is the smartest dog breed you've ever personally owned and trained?

I have never really owned that smart of dogs. However, that could be because I am not very good at training. I currently have three dogs. Two of them are muts. One is a lab/chow mix and the other one is a shih-zu/terrior mix. I also have an American Eskamo. I think that out of all three of them it is my shih-zu/terrior mix. She can sit, touch, rollover, target, go potty, and shake. Although she is 4 years old so she has the time behind her. The American Eskamo is smart but he is only a year old and for some reason he doesn't listen to me. I think its his adorable eyes that make me melt. And the lab/chow mix is the oldest he is about 8 years old. He was rescued from a shelter and I think he was abused because he is skiddish. He does one thing that we didnt teach him so I think hsi previous owner had taught him. When you say seek em. He will go after any birds within reach. He has actually caught a few of them. I love my dogs no matter what. I think that they are each smart in their own way.

Did you train the dog? I am curious as to how you managed to get the dog to do so much, and it's still a puppy.

I would have to say its my current female dog (I have a male Shep/Chow mix and a female Lab/Chow mix).....she is quite intelligent I would say due to being Lab but also VERY stubborn (and cheeky at times) due to her being part Chow Chow....Regardless though of the whys etc she is definately the smartest dog I've owned

Wow I believe a lot depends on the owner of the dog, and how they train their dog. I have read a book that says you can train your senior dog, so with work and time anything is possible right?

I currently have a yellow labrador, he is really smart and easy to train. He is 10 month old now; I have taught him all the basic tricks when he was a puppy and I only needed to say it couple times, he remembers it and get it really quick, I was prettyimpressed about that.

I would have to say german shepherd mix. I have had two german shepherd mixes in my lifetime. The first one whom went by the name of Candy was very smart. She was a mother hen whom watched over us. Now the current one I have, her name is mindy and she is very smart. You can't even trick her. When it comes to her coming into the house. We do not even have to call her. The border collie Mix I have also is very smart too. They both know when to come in the house without being called, but they also listen to us when we tell them. My border collie will wake my mother up every morning like clockwork.

We had a german shephard which is the best dog which we have and also i feel its the intelligent breed dog. We love him so much and its really a huge can fight with any other breed dogs easily. But you must always keep in mind that you should keep your dogs clean always and also protect him from other diseases.

I have a Malinois and English sheepdog mix, and she is definitely the smartest dog I've ever owned. A lot of her brothers and sisters went to the local police force for training. As a puppy, she learned her commands pretty early, though I had never thought to teach her hand signals for anything other than "sit" or "down." The only drawback to the Malinois breed is if you don't socialize them often as puppies, they mistrust strangers and might bite people.

I have a blue tick coonhound I adore and a pure bred black lab. Both of these breeds are good but we now have mixed breed pups from these two and they are amazing. At 7 wks they come when called and know to go out, yes they have accidents at times but are better trained to go out now then both of their parents at an older age.

you're dog is really amazing teaching these things would wake weeks of training. I've raised and trained many breeds of dogs: Boxers doberman Bulldogs Rottweiler and German Shepherd and i've noticed that the German Shepherd Dog is a very good learner.
