Ok I'm in a bit of a pickle here. my regular PA is going off on maternity leave next week and now I have the boring task of hiring a temp. I've been interviewing the whole week and now it's down to two people. One is an older woman about 45 years old and totally boring, short lady with glasses older than my grandma but she has over 20 years experience working as a PA so she knows all the office drills and stuff. The other one is a totally smashing good looking hunk with a broad chest, sexy voice, gorgeous smile, lovely hazel eyes, tight buttocks, (and oh I can see the six pack chest through his suit)cute wavy hair and wow he's like a mixture of Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and that high school musical boy (dunno his name. He is only 22 years old but he has a bit of experience and would need to train him a bit but OMG he just makes me drool and I just want to frisk him on my desk and well you... "do the naughty deed"Now I know typically the job goes to the best qualified candidate but the lady is ssooo boring.. and I was bored interviewing her within the first 5 seconds but this dude wow I interviewed him for almost 2 hours.. (half of it was not even work related!) So I don't know what to do know.. if i hire the boring old lady I will regret my decision and if i hire the dude i wont get any work done but will absolutely love going to the office and i think I would enjoy my job more.. So tell me what do I do? Whom would you choose if it was you?

Are you really a serious professional? The way you describe the "male hunk" is like some people describe a dumb blonde. Put your hormomes to bed lady and get real.

seriously, it depends on what your bottom line is. if you are planning to make money? you may want to hire the one that best suites the position. why would you base hiring on looks alone? that makes no sense to me. so obviously, i would pick the old boring lady because i know she would get the job done. i work for money!

I'm not hiring because of looks more like personality. The old lady has a very boring personality and the dude has a wonderful cheerful personality. Not about making money either as its just looking after paper work and not marketing or other money making entity..

Oh I think that hunk will get you into lots of trouble. LOL not that you would not want his kind of trouble but then it could get you both into more trouble than maybe you want. I think you only want the hunk to jump his bones. tch tch tch!!! Naughty naughty. How about you ask the hunk out on a date and hire the boring lady. I am sure your hunk won't have trouble finding other work but if you think he likes you back grab the guy, lay your claim and help him find another job and enjoy the evenings and time off work however you would like with the hunk after hours.

I say that you hire the boring lady because you know she can do the job with little to no training and that you hit on the hunk. You won't be all caught up in training someone for a temp position so you will have a bit more free time. If you hire the lady...you will do your work better and so will she. If you hire the guy...you won't get any work done and he probably won't do so well either

The lady. the whole POINT of hiring someone is to get the work done properly not have a boy toy to drool over. am sorry but i dont think there is a choice. as for her being boring.. i would be much more concerned why You think she is. if she has 20 years experience then there has to be something there. just because she may not be "Hip" and a hunk does not make her without value. of course she may not want to work with YOU. She may find your attitude very negative and it certainly strikes me as derogatory. Its attitudes like this that actually cause companies to lose out on excellent employees. rj

since its just temporary this would be my suggestion... i think you should hire the shorter woman, because she's more expensive and knowing that you can do more other things, and just check on her once in a while. and while you have hired the shorter woman, since you want the tall dark and handsome guy, why not just get his number ans him to go out ... . you have both.

Please put your customers above your personal interests. If the lady has the experience and can make your customers happy then you should hire her. If your customers get the impression that you aren't paying attention to them and the Brad Pitt guy is getting all the attention you will start losing money and in the end won't have a job. Think long term here. Someone once said - Use your head before your emotions take over - it really is sound advice.

although when working with people it does help that you can both hold a conversation with them but it sounds like if you hire the guy you will be focussing on him rather than is he doing the work well. You have to think really about do you have time to train this guy and do your work. I think if it was me i would go with the woman because she has more experience and if its only for maternity leave surely you can put up with her for the maternity leave and you only met her once so she may be different

I guess it depends on what characteristics the job needs. If the job needs an outgoing, young, people kind of person than obviously hire the guy, if the jobs just needs someone to get the work done then hire boring grandma lady! I dont think its fair to hire based on what you want as entertainment in your office, both of these people are obviously counting on you to make a living so be very wise when you make your decision. I personally think I could work better if there was a fun vibe in my office and it was not always sulky and boring, but if you think the super cute man will distract you I dont think he is the right guy for the job! Anyways, do whatever you feel is best, just think it through because as i said earlier they obviously need the job, so hire who ever you think will do the job right...look beyond everything else and stick to what the job requires (I know thats tough to do but still, it is very wrong to discriminate based on looks and age) Good luck ;)

Well, I will think that even if it's a temporary position, I do think that it should be one who can do the job without much supervision should be a better choice. I do understand that the old boring woman is boring and certainly not appealing to you. However, she will most likely be able to do for you all the job you needed her to work for you fast and correctly. I do think that this is the most important thing. At least you will not have to waste much time trying to teach someone new to do the job. In addition, as you mentioned, the guy had not much experience, and you certainly have to spend more time to teach him to do his work, which in around a few months or so, he will be out of here. I think it's quite a waste to have to teach people how to do things when they are here only for a few months. I think you may also end up spending more time talking to him about non-work-related things if you hire him too, which makes you get even lesser work done. So, the conclusion is I will hire the experienced old boring woman. Anyway, I will be just facing her only for a few months, and after that the regular PA will be back. I rather get more work done, than to get no work done during this period.

I might be biased because I have an HR background, but you should hire the best person for the job, regardless of appearance. It sounds to me that neither of your candidates are the perfect fit and, in this economy, there are plenty of people looking for work.
