HR 2647 Defense Authorization Bill-One more freedom bites the dust!

This bill is a ban on the US Military recruiting or retaining a person associated or affiliated with a group associated with hate related violence against groups or persons or the US government, as determined by the attorney general. So now the Attorney General can decide who we can associate with? Who we can discuss things with online? The bill uses liberal language when describing what is meant by 'hate related violence' By giving the Attorney General sole discretion over what consitutes a 'hate group', the measure invites political persecution of unfavored political activism. Though the amendment generaly defines a 'hate group' as one advocating 'violence', the amendment does define as 'evidence of affiliation or association of hate group' being 'involved in online activities....etc' http://thenewamerican.com/index.php/usnews/election/1387

Hi, debrak! Didn't anybody learn anything from the McCarthy debacle? How can we regress so much? Our country has entirely too many people keeping an eye on entirely too many people. The Southern Poverty Law Center has a Hatewatch as part of their quest for freedom and equality for all. But they're not trying to prevent anyone from speaking or writing or anything, except for preventing violence and disrespect of others. The government must butt out of our personal lives, not more involved than ever!

Sorry, but I refuse to accept that Americans aren't stronger than that. We MUST all be activists, or our entire concept of American character goes down the tubes.

I used to think so to Cobra, but I am beginning to wonder when I read some of the cr*p I see in defense of all these stupid laws. The only goal I can see is that someone wants to shut up the pro life, NRA, anti gay marriage Conservative Christian crowd. This kind of law makes me real nervous when I think of all the FEMA camps set up and empty with railroad tracks leading up to big warehouse type buildings...with showers! I hope that they are not for what they seem to be for. I guess I am a little sensitive to the commonality to Germany in the 1930's. My mother's step father was an Austrian Jew who was here in the USA on business when Hitler invaded. After the war when he went back to Austria....his whole family and community was gone, never to be found. Grampa Jake was much loved by my Irish/Italian Catholic family and I grew up reading the Hiding Place, and Anne Frank's Diary. I don't like what I am seeing in my own country.

Haven't you ever seen the amount of gang members and members of hate groups that are in the military? Try googling it, there are actually US gang tags in IRAQ. Great so we are teaching these gang bangers how to effectively kill people. So when they finish their tour, they can kill better on the streets in everyone's neighborhood. Yeah you're right that awful horrible Attorney General, and the members of Congress for trying to keep us safe from killers.

We already have laws against killing. And do you really think the government cares if someone goes around killing people in the name of a gang?...if the TRUELY did they'd quit trying to disarm us law abiding citizens. I am sad to hear of the gang bangers defacing buildings in Iraq...you're right about that being wrong. But this bill will do little to stop gang bangers from killing you...they already know how to do that.

You're right about gangs already knowing how to kill but, they aren't very good at it. The shoot a lot of people that aren't their actual target. First off when speaking about gangs one must know that there are different types of members, from my personal experience, since I know several gang members ones that are older. The older members that I know do not want to kill children and innocent people, they are only interested in killing the rival gang members. I use to own a property that was right next to a gang house. I never had any problems with the older member as a matter of fact the often helped me out when I needed it. The young members are a different story, you know the ones that are old enough to join the military. You conservatives get all upset about laws that make it through one part of Congress and even both sections of Congress but, you fail to realize that if someone that really wants to be in the military wants to they can take their case all the way to the Supreme Court.

Please don't lump people into stereotypical groups. :) YOu conservatives...there is a broad range of opinions on both sides of our society....and lots in between as well. You are correct in one thing...the government cannot stop somebody from doing what they really want to do. I guess my point was that the government should not be in the business of reading people's minds. And if you read the article you will see that that is just what they will do for evidence if they have to. To many ways to abuse the power. That is why I am for limited government interference in people's lives.

Government cannot stop two people from hating each others. Hate is a personal issue. I can assume only right wing groups will be listed as a hate groups. When we have an administration that politicise every little thing, just like the census, one can only assume the administration would like every new recruit to be a registered Democrat.

exactly....they will need to employ mind readers with crystal balls. How do you prove that someone hates? or for that matter...prove they love?

This is what happens when we decide to ban thought. There is no excuse, reason or reasoning for this. It is hate in itself.

I agree. And many more Americans are starting to see it that way.

Hmm ... would that include the Boy Scouts of America? Don't the libs and the ACLU consider them a hate group? lol

I have heard that the Boy Scouts were considered a 'hate' group. It's because they will not allow homosexuals as troup leaders. In other words, they hold to Christian principles.
