What is it about celebrity deaths?

Why is it that folks can't seem to get over them and move on? I'm still seeing discussions about Michael Jackson and his memorial. No, I still do not understand why the city of L.A. should be footing the bill for that memorial service when the person that died was still worth so much money! No, I don't understand why so many people still are dwelling on his passing. he's dead, he ain't coming back, get over it already I mean, I was saddened to hear of his passing, but it isn't going to take over my whole life! What is it about celebrities that make so many people keep dwelling on them? Whether it's MJ or Anna Nichole Smith, people just keep picking away at every little detail. Don't we all have better things to do with ourselves? Have we simply become a world where nothing is more important than a celebrity? If so, God help us all Did you ever have one of those days when you just wanted to piss off everybody?

It is not so much about celebrities as it is about idols. Most people have an idol. It might be in the music industry, the movie industry or the sport arena. You might have an idol in each one of them... or several. Fact of the matter is that people love music, movies and sport, largely because of the people in it. Those people are not just celebrities. They are entertainers who put a ray of sunshine into our life. People grow up with their idol. Fans of Michael Jackson have been following him for over 25 years. I have an idol in the music business since my teenage years. He is 66 years old and I have been following him for 45 years. You get to know everything about your idol and he becomes part of your life. Celebrities who make a huge impact like Elvis Presley keep on living for ever. It is not only about doing something extraordinary (like being the first man on the moon). It is about doing something to entertain the masses and make them happy day after day. And singers are the only people who can do that... followed by the actors and the sportmen.

They are human beings... but not ordinary human beings. They are legends who made the world spin around and they deserve recognition. I have never been a fan of Michael Jackson because he was not of my generation and I did not adapt to his kind of music. But all the same... a billion people loved him. And who else in this world can make a billion people happy?

I can think a least of a handful of things that I can do with myself But seriously, I love talking about Michael Jackson and the constitution says I have freedom of speech and I have the right to be happy as well and bear arms. So don't forget that LOL I

yes, dear, the Constitution says all that. Thankfully, the laws of this state protect me because with your vision you will never get to bear arms

Yeah, it's silly, but people get so into these people and their art, their lives, etc. that they feel like they know them. And NO, the city should not pay for the memorial. We could team up and see who we can piss off together. Are there any trolls on today? (evil grin)

You're not pissing me off, I totally agree with you. My sister in law has turned into a Michael Jackson wacko fanatic. I told her to get a life, and now she's not speaking to me, lol. When she began rooting around for MJ memorabilia, and told me about the ten magazines she bought, I lost it. She was whining about how much MJ memorabilia cost on the internet. Come on!!! I guess the Jackson family needs their weirdo fans to subsidize their lifestyle now that they've lost their cash cow. I think it's ridiculous L.A. is picking up the cost of that memorial, especially since Calfifornia is in economic woes right now. Just saw photos of MJ's kids outside a Kingdom Hall. I feel so sorry for those kids. They really need to go to someone else outside that crazyazz family.

I totally understand what you are talking about; I mean I feel sorry for the family and his children to have to deal with his passing. But all the media coverage and all the talk like he was Mother Teresa or something. And all the people who you see crying over him are teenagers that were not even born when he was making music. Please people get over it, he is not a saint and he will never be a saint. I totally agree with you!!!

Nope, I don't see the Catholic Church or the Pope rushing to make MJ a Saint

Hi, fwidman! It's been a long time! I don't get the whole thing, either. One of the biggest problems in Michael Jackson's life was the inability to be normal in any way. Can't we allow him to be private now? All the strurm und drang has gone too far, and it makes no sense at all.MJ was, indeed, an amazingly talented person. Let's continue to listen to his music and watch his videos and let his family have its mourning in private, too. Jpanne
