advertising with wordpress..What is experience with wordpress?

is anybody earning money with wordpress? It is quite simple with blogspot to show ads but somewhere I read that wordpress allows blogging but not allowed to show ads of third party. If u want to show ads then you have to pay some money to wordpress... Is it true? What you did to show your third party ads on ur site. Third party may be google adsense..? What is experience with wordpress?
