Problems with Sony Ericsson w580i (Emergency Calls Only).

Hi Mylotters, I have just bought a Sony Erricsson (w580i) for my wife and after just about a month, it keeps coming up on the screen, "Emergency Calls Only". It does this at the most inconvenient times and often switches itself off. There is always a signal, plenty of battery life and credit on the phone. We have a Vodafone pay-as-you-go simcard in there that works well and has always worked well on the old phone with no problems at all. If this persists I think I may change it back at the store and get a Samsung like I have instead. Never had trouble with that at all. Has anyone had this problem with this phone? How did you fix it? I can find nothing in the handbook or on the Sony Ericsson website that addresses this problem. I would be grateful for any help any of you can give.. - Derek

Hello friend, I had a friend who had a similar problem with another sony Ericsson phone, though it was a different model than yours. Sony have been notorious for such problems and it is sad that they haven't addressed the issue properly even after so many years. I use a Nokia phone and the only reason I don't buy Sony even though I like its interface and speed is due to the fact that their after sales service is very poor, specially here in India.

Thank you for your response. I think the best way forward is to return to the store with the phone and change it. After doing a search, there seems to have been a lot of users who have had this problem. - Derek

handset - new model handset
I experienced the same thing with my handset, a motorolla. I can't get the signal when I am inside the house and what is written on the screen is 'Emergency calls only'. When I am outside it works perfectly. I think some phones are modeled for outdoor use only. Next time one needs to select carefully which phone works best for both outdoors and indoors.

Thank you for commenting. It is something that I will bare in mind. I took the sim out of the phone last night and cleaned it, because it came up on the screen, "no sim card". Afterwards, although it still came up, "emergency calls only", that quickly disappeared and the phone has been OK since.. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one. - Derek

I believed your Sony Ericsson that it still under warranty. Please check with your Sonny Ericsson Service Center. Don't tried to fixed your self that it will avoid your warranty.

Thank you for your response. Yes, it is still under warranty and after reading some of the reports and poor customer support from Sony Ericsson with some people, I think we will be returning to the store with it, and change it for a more reliable make. - Derek
