Are you totally confuse by the rating system?

I've seen a few of the discussions posted on the rating system and how it works. I've read through the postings and comments on this subject till my head is spinning. I even sat up and read a year old, very long! discussion posted by a guy named CRASH who is on staff here and even his answers got me no closer to an understanding. Perhaps the site wants us to be confused? I don't know if I should rate all +'s for effort or just quit rating at all? I just can't bring myself to rating anyone a negative...they've tried and that is good by me, isn't it for you? I don't even go to discussions that are frivolous or designed to provoke...so wouldn't that effect the alogrithm? No visitors, no earnings, right? You tell me. I will probably still be confused, oh well!

The way I understand the rating system to be, is simply a + / - reward system for how every user here feels on a person and their discussion. The star is affected by the rating, and it gives people a sense of who follows the rules and who doesn't. At the same time, it can also be bad as people who do not agree with another could easily - the person, and then who is to say that the person is actually deserving of the negative rating? I hope this helps. I can't really say for sure that my assumptions are correct, so anyone who has other assumptions and would like to discuss them with me, then please go right on ahead and don't hesitate!

You get a star when you reach 100. Or is it 200? And then as people rate you, you get a number from 1 to 10. As she said...some people rate according to agree/disagree. But the guidelines say not to do this. The best way to figure it out is do as Libby says and read, then re read the guildelines. YOu can find them at the bottom of the page. I've read them several times...and some are still not clear. Most of all...HAVE FUN...lol.

I am new too. All I know is when we rate someone positive.. it helps the responder overall myLot rating and ours too! So, it is a Win-Win situation. It is also good for us to mark the best response (be given to the most appropriate response to your discussion as a token of appreciation for their effort). This will encourage fellow myLotters.

I wait about a week or ten days..to give a best response. Does anyone have any other ideas on how long we should wait? You're right Iriene88, I've gotten some best responses...and I was very excited and happy about them!

I will try waiting longer as you suggest...it's true that people do slow down in responding. Perhaps they feel what's the point? I've responded to discussions that were over a year old....just cause I was excited about the topic and forgot to look! lol I'll try it Mike. Thanks.

I understand the rating system just fine. If you agree with the poster the give them a plus. If you don't agree, then give them a neg. It has nothing to do with fairness, and everything to do with being PC.

Now we know why the country is in such bad shape.... Nobody thinks anymore.

I do not think that is right, someone's opinion should not be rated negative just because you disagree with it. Everyone has different opinions and all should be respected even though we may not agree with it and making someone's rating going down because they have a different opinion is not fair. I only rate people negatively if they say that someone's opinion is "wrong" and be a jerk about it or if they being offensive.

I think Destiny was being sarcastic guys. He's been the target of those who rate HIM negative due to his philosophies and opinions.

I too don't understand the ratings system, so I generally ignore it.. hahaha.. It might come back to hunt me later on, me not understanding the ratings things but for now I just let it be, If I get a high rating, I'm thankful if not.. well I don't know how much it affects my earnings but I know that mylot is generally fair so I'll leave it all up to them.

I have made up my mind that I will rate a + if the person has an outstanding response...other than that, I will not rate. If I find a discussion that is very interesting and I see that a lot of thought was put into it...I will rate it a +. So far, I've not seen anything to report.

Because of the abuse, I wish they'd just abolish the rating system. Or maybe they should have a popup and whenever you give a negative rating you get a message saying "remember you aren't supposed to rate somebody negatively for disagreeing with your point of view - are you sure you want to do this as it will affect your rating too"... :-)

They have the preview comment...why not a pop up asking if you're sure you are following the guidelines. I also like the idea of saying WHY you feel it is not a good comment..a drop down menu?

I am not confused with rating system at all. If I like to respond to a discussion, I will and if not then leave it. I will always try to rate the postive rating only. Negative rating is something which I had never used and did not get the chance to use it. I am not interested in who is Mylot staff,etc.. I do what I like with my ratings..
