I'm taking my great niece home this weekend, she's 5 yrs old and has spent the last month here with her grandma. I have an almost 9 hour drive & think having a 5 yr old for 9 hours in a car is going to be about all that I can handle..... I was talking to my daughter and she asked if I was going to take my 2 yr old granddaughter with me (9 hours one way and out of state - 3 actually)so that she could meet her little cousins that live there....she wouldn't remember this later, so what would be the point? Question is....does my daughter think I'm insane?? She got upset that I'm not taking the little one with me.

Awww...I know your daughter wants her baby to meet her little cousins. But then it would be a little too much for you to handle! If you had company that would be completely different. But otherwise, I think what you decided is definitely the sane thing to do.I would have done what you did.LOL. I am sure your daughter will understand in a bit.

I'm thinking my daughter was wanting the weekend to herself. When the lil one stays with me, I can always take her home when she gets cranky and tired....this is too far away from home for me to go with her, I think. **big difference between traveling with a five yr old & a two yr old**

Your telling me. I have a 4 year old niece. I remember when she was a baby. travelling with her was OMG. Poor thing she would get really restless and the feeds and the diaper changes. Gosh!

She might be upset now, but wait until she has kids one day, and then remind her of this. I drove for five days with my two kids once, they were seven and five...I love my kids, but lets just say it was a LONG five days. I spent more money on hotels than I meant to because I would get suites with an extra bedroom, just so I could have a little break from them during the night. Not that it mattered, we were all sleeping! But, best of luck with that, she will appreciate it someday.

lol....I know what you mean! When my kids were little, I started to travel at night while they were asleep because we were constantly stopping to change diapers, stopping to 'go potty' and to eat or just to let them out to stretch. I just got back and wish they would have had portable dvd players when my kids were little.....sure came in handy!! :) It was a long ride (8 hours one way) and after 4 hours on the way home my 14 yr old was complaining and wanted to stop for everything he could possibly think of.

Oh oh!! You caught me!! lol...yeah, it was alot easier with her being older, not having to change a diaper & being able to understand what she was telling me when she wanted something!! (I'm still catching onto some of lil mama's english, heheh!!) I know the word FRIES in any kind of BABY LANGUAGE!! ;)

sounds like you had a fun ride home auntie! Yeah, I really don't think lil mama would make it. When me & hubby would come up to see you guys we had munchkin in pull ups, and 2 in diapers! Oi! THAT was a VERY loooooooong trip!

I think it is great that you know your limits and did not take the littles one. Having rode for over 24 hours in a car with a 2 year old from UT to TX I then decided that I would never travel more than 4 hours at a time ever again with a small child (actually I decided to put him in a box and mail him but then came to my senses). I know that this response is a few days late so I hope that you had a great trip and yes you would have to be insane to do that. It is why young people have children and not middleaged and old people; it just takes so much energy and patience.

Yep, I was imagining stopping for diaper/potty breaks & stopping to eat and how it could have been if I'd have taken the two yr old.....I prolly would've called my daughter and made her meet me half way and take her back!
