Is it legal in your country to keep your dog in a cage?

We have a mixed breed, a Shih Tzu-terrier that is about 4 years old (human years). We keep him in his kennel / cage most of the time. We're not cruel to animals as we feed him twice a day with quality dog food, make sure there's sufficient water for him to drink, play with him and let him run in our little yard a few times a day. We clean his poop too. We try to keep him safe as there could be dog nappers out there, and there could be provocative kids who think dogs are dumb and start throwing pebbles at the dog. In your country or State, is it an offence to keep your dog "behind bars"? If so, why?

Well, there is no any rules about dogs in my country. In my town itself, I rarely saw dogs walking freely on the street. Usually the dogs are kept by their owner and I never see the owner put them behind bars.

Hi, my answer is yes of course. I am from Malaysia. Most of us here keep our dogs in a cage. It is for our own safety and others. We just want to prevent our dogs go to attack some strangers. If its happen we will sue by them and need to pay for their medical fees. If something more worst happen then will be another story. So it is better to keep our dogs in a cage.

Hi Ichiat, I miss Kuching. I was teaching somewhere in the interior of Samarahan Division (9th Division) a long, long time ago. Ya, in Malaysia, almost every one has a dog kennel or a cage. It's far too dangerous or risky to let them off without the owner's supervision. With City Hall officers being trigger happy, it's better to keep our pets indoors. Cheers!

Hi I'm Malaysian too and yes, we keep dogd in kennel most of the time. We love our dog to be freed and run whenever they want, however like Ichiat says, I'm also afraid of dog-snatchers!

It is legal as far as I know in America, I think it just depends on the size. As long as you aren't committing animal cruelty you are good to go I think.

Here in the UK you can get prosecuted for cruelty to animals. I would say a cage is cruel and if it is causing distress to the dog, then the dog would be taken away and the owner punished with a fine or in extreme cases imprisonment. If a dog wants to stay in a cage, then that would be OK, but the only way that could be demonstrated was if there was no door on the cage and the dog could come and go as it pleased. Dogs like to be in a pack, and the human family is often its pack. They are wonderful animals and provide us with unconditional love. It is sad that there have to be laws about mistreatment. I could never hurt a dog physically or psychologically. - Derek

Hi derek, thanks for the reply. Yeah, laws on animal cruelty or mistreatment is necessary because humans don't respect animals. I believe that in the US, laws are more strict. What I like about western countries is that they care a lot for animals, and the ASPCA, RSPCA & SPCA have powers to apprehend any pet owner who flout the law. What other laws related to animal cruelty are there in UK?

The law is quite strict over here too.. Sometimes a person can be banned for ever owning an animal if they have been convicted of cruelty or neglect. - Derek

Why would you keep him ina cage? I can see putting him in there at night kind of like his bedroom. But i dont understand why you would not allow the dog to be free in the house.

I have seen dogs before that were kept in cages most of the time that actually had deformed feet. Caused by the cage floor.

I don't think that there are any laws of keeping your animals ina cage here in the us. Or at least I haven't heard about it. I haven't heard any laws on keeping your pets in their cage here. But there is a leash law in my state and which I am at least greatful for that. I believe just as long as you keep your pet fead and watered then there should be no law against it. And give it time and space and room to come out and play. I have a small kitten that is no more then 7 weeks old and I keep her in the cage half of the day and out the other half and that is just because she there is an older cat in the home that needs to get used to her first and also it is for her safety until she is old enough and big enough for them to play together.

Hi trish67. Thanks for your response. I've heard of laws that prohibit pet owners from tying their dogs to a chain, but this is the first time I've heard of a law that makes it compulsory for dogs to be on a leash. Interesting. I believe that each of the 50 States in the US has its own laws on pets. Thanks for the additional information. I only wish that there are better rules to protect animals in my country. :)

I love dogs! in our country it is not a crime o cage dogs. Though in some cities it is illegal for dogs to be wandering on the streets. I personally hate it when kids throw stones at dogs. I know they're just kids and all, but still they should be guided accordingly since dogs are living things and they get hurt too.

Hi beatrice, in my country, if dogs are found wandering on the streets, they'll be shot by Cuty Hall enforcement officers. Yeah, that's cruel. Anyway, from this topic, I've learnt a few things about keeping dogs in cages. Some countries have strict laws, some don't. For me, if keeping a dog in a cage means keeping it away from harm, then it is fine. After all, there are people who are just waiting to provoke dogs and then later sue us when they're attacked!! Thanks for the reply.

Dear friend, In our place South India it is legal to keep the Dog in cage, or in house. But there are animal rights activities which are not much strong. Also there are street dogs which are now coming down as the Govt. had started to eliminate it. But he animal law here is not much powerful.

i have a shih tuzu as well. I wouldnt dream of keeping him in a cage. if we go out he has the run of the downstairs, with water bowls in the living room and kitchen. i wouldnt dream of leaving him on his own in the garden either. i take him out for regular walks and he seems perfectly content. having said that, his previous owner lived in a ground floor flat with a shared garden, and he was kept in a cage in their kitchen. he seems as though being kept in a cage hasnt given him any hangups although he hates other dogs. This might have been because he didnt mix with other dogs at all.

im not really sure if its against the law in USA but i think not since so called "breeders' get away with it all the time and they do not usually treat their caged dogs as well as you do. yours is for the safety and well being of your dog, theirs is just for money and they seldom care how the poor dog is kept. i hope you have a comfortable bottom to the cage.

It is considered cruelty to the animal to keep it in a cage MOST OF THE TIME, this doesn't allow the animal some type of freedom. You have cage/ kennel, they are 2 different things. A cage is a small enclosure to contain an animal for sleeping, travelling etc. A kennel is a large space with room to roam all over , with a dog house, floor etc. REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U..

I don't consider it a cage. I consider it a kennel, a "safe place" like a den in the wild. If it is used correctly, not as a punishment, but as a training tool and a safe haven, with warm blankets in a cozy spot, it shouldn't be considered cruel, but acutally kind and considerate.

We have a law in our state, that if the dog goes outside unattended, he must be on a leash...but there is no requirement to put them in a pen or cage. Some who have large dogs,or for those who are gone all day, may find it necessary to put them a pen, while they are away. But I would hope that the kennel or cage is large enough for the dog to roam and stretch his legs, when you aren't home, and if it's outside, I would hope that it is not exposed to the sun. However, my understanding of having a pet, is to care for them, love them, play with them, and treat them like you would a family member. When you are home, why would you keep him caged?

It is legal in my country, but we have our dog free in our garden, and sometimes we bring him to walk a little bit.

People here in America use dog crates (cages) as a way of training their dogs. I personally have never done this but alot of people do. My niece has a pit bull puppy and he sleeps in a cage and he is in the cage when they go out so he doesn't chew things. I don't like it but thats how people house train their dogs here.

It's legal here in Utah though I can only remember ever knowing 1 family who did, but that's just because they were too ignorant to train their pets not to go in the road and they lived next to a highway. I personally don't think that it's a very pleasant thing for dogs, but I don't really think it's inhumane either. I have never heard of it being illegal anywhere.

Yes, it is legal in my country to keep a dog in a cage, otherwise it is difficult to manage a dog. I have seen that nobody keeps a cat in a cage. Other than dog, everybody keeps their birds in cages. I thik it is kind of cruel to keep a dog in a cage,, but it the common way to take care of dogs and it is very easy than leaving them open. I think it is a good point for animal activists to raise.

dogs in cage - this one shows no mercy at all. _
I don't think that keeping your dogs "behind bars" is an illegal act. We have our dog a shih tzu-lhasa apso mix that is also kept in a cage because she has this habit of biting furniture even our feet. I also read in a book that when your dog is biting, the remedy would be putting them inside the cage and give it something to play with. With what you have said, i think your dog is in good hands and there is nothing to worry about.

Yes, it is legal in my country to keep the dogs in the cage. My opinion is to always keep them in the kennel. It is not safe to keep them open as it causes nuisance to neighbours. People who like having pets should better own an independent house. They should not be a nuisance to the society. Just as we don't like people talking loud, throwing garbage just outside other's house, behaving indecently with others, similarly pets should be trained well or avoid having pets in an apartment.

No it is not illegal to keep a dog in a cage here. I however do think it is cruel to do so. Dogs need room to run and play and a lot of attention...not just a few times a day
